2008 Campaign: Leaked Strategy or Strategic Leak?

Posted in wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, McCain, romney, giuliani on February 28th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

The Boston Globe ‘obtained’ strategy documents from the Romney campaign and the New York Daily News ‘leaked’ documents from the Giuliani campaign. Are these two newspapers assisting the two campaign’s real strategies? It is not difficult to imagine that anyone’s campaign staff would be careless enough to lose documents or even allow them to be taken intentionally. What a good way to test the water. Romney’s campaign declined to confirm authenticity of the documents. One report from the Giuliani camp suggested their ‘leak’ was notes from a staffer and not official campaign documents.

GiulianiMcCainRomneyGingrich

Are the newspapers really that stupid? Probably not, as they simply state both campaign’s response to the documents and that’s that. An easy way to publish an eye-catching headline and a meaningless report. Everyone is complicit and who cares anyhow. The campaigns get the public to respond to the leaks and the information in them and have deniability provided by the press reports. The newspapers get a cheap story to attract interest at the newsstand. And as usual everyone involved is trying to hose the public.

Although Giuliani and McCain lead in the polls, we all know it is early yet. Romney has received some mild criticism and is in third or fourth depending on the poll you read. The other candidate is not a candidate. Newt Gingrich is in third in some polls and has stated he will decide on running later in the year. Smart move to save money, time and aggravation of exposing any weakness too early. When you’re leading you have a target on your back and Giuliani and McCain may suffer from their histories more than Gingrich or Romney. And between these two, Romney may have the least to worry about.

I, Hillary: As in Impeachment Taboo

Sen Hillary Rodham ClintonApparently, we were not the only ones to mention Hillary’s ‘I’ word. It appears someone at the Kos compared this to the swiftboat episode. Well, if you rearrange the word taboo you can spell boat with an ‘o’ left, maybe, o boat. The difference would be no one had to go hunting for the impeachment story. It was all over the news when it happened , if y’all recall.

Tony Blair on Iran

Posted in Bush, wordpress, Iran, Opinion, Foreign Affairs, Tony Blair on February 28th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Tony BlairOnly expected to be in office until some time this summer, but you at least have to give Tony Blair credit for consistency. A case can be made that Tony Blair was treated differently in matters of international politics than Margaret Thatcher. Reagan and Thatcher were the international tag team of the eighties. Like most, not everything they did was correct. But the outcomes usually were.

Tony Blair and George Bush have been criticized considerably more and their efforts were not that different. With the exception that Reagan’s cowboy attitude was never referred to that way. “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall” sounds much different than ‘The United States prefers that Iraq meet its obligations voluntarily, yet we are prepared for the alternative.’

Down 416, It’s Not Just Wall Street

Posted in Money Matters, Opinion on February 28th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Investor EyeA radio report early today attributed some of the decline as related to those who expect the economy to wander into recession this year. You can only fudge the numbers so long before reality takes over. A recent jobs report summarized here showed the Labor Dept characterizing the .1 change in unemployment as ‘negligible’. More like their description was negligent. That .1 increase represented about 150,000 jobs vs their claimed 110,000 increase. Which renders a 40,000 job loss in one month. It may be balanced or emphasized by reports on the housing market. Long considered a ‘bellweather’ of eonomic conditions in the US, giving it that significance reflects the any way you can fill ‘em real estate development trend which has a downside. Not only for the developers, sellers and buyers, but the political debate over border control gets financial when you’re trying to fill empty houses in an over developed market.

Today’s financial markets were not only affected by global pressures. Wall Street and the financial media have a stake in how events are depicted also. Start focusing on more than 2008 Presidential candidates for the conspiracy theories.

Wall Street has worst day since 9/11 attacks
February 27, 2007
By SUSAN TOMPOR
After one pretty much non-stop run up since July, stocks proved once again Tuesday that, yes, they can go down. And they can go down real fast in just one day. We saw the biggest tumble in more than four years.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 12,216.24 on Tuesday – down 416.02 points or 3.29%.

Wall Street Whiplash

Posted in Money Matters, wordpress, Opinion on February 27th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Investment AdviceA peculiar recurring theme exists at all or most of the financial reporting organizations.  Even on a typical, more or less uneventful news day on Wall Street, the financial reporting provides some explanation for the movement of the major indices or some segment of the economy that is responsible in their view.  Many times the explanation comes before the end of the trading day or even before the event is complete.  Mid-day is a typical time to see the reasons given for action in the financial markets for the day.  And this is a regular, recurring trend in financial reporting.

Doesn’t that seem a little odd?  Does that suggest the gurus on Wall Street are that skilled or is the explanation not entirely valid.  Or maybe no one really cares.  Or maybe when a few bad things happen it spooks the heavy traders and in turn spooks the little guy.  BTW, the little guy usually gets his clock cleaned in swings like today.  Which have been explained for hours ago.  But with the time difference between the US and China…….ok.  Not so much for the other stuff.  Just a few thoughts presented for your financial consideration.

Senator Hillary Clinton and Impeachment

Posted in wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Democrats, Clinton, disclosure, ethics, United States, Public, hillary on February 27th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

HRCIt just doesn’t get any better than this. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (HRC) has the audacity to dictate what other candidates can and cannot talk about in the campaign. Hillary, you reaped the benefits of being in the Whitehouse for two Presidential terms and now you expect people to limit the discussion on that legacy. Like the Miller High Life man says in one of their recent ads, ” y’all must be crazy.” And we’re not talking about a burger for $11.50. No, no, no Hillary, this may cost you way more than $11.50. But then you found no problem with demanding Barack Obama should part with a million because Geffen said things you don’t like. Didn’t anyone tell you there would be things said during a campaign that you don’t like?

As we said here before, how can you vote for someone with the legacy of Hillary Clinton? Maybe Hillary should have done something about what went on in the Whitehouse during President William Jefferson Clinton’s Administration. And now you don’t want people to mention the “I” word. Unfortunately for all of us, Hillary, it is part of the history of the United States. That is the kind of legacy that makes it so difficult to maintain a respectable reputation on the world stage. HRC has no problem attacking President Bush and others as well as attiributing this country’s occasional dificulty in foreign affairs to these same people. But Hillary does not wish to accept her part in bringing this to bear on national pride or honor. Shame on you Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. And to you also James Carville for what you say in the article presented below.

The Clinton Legacy
After Spat, Campaigns Know to Expect Swift Reprisal for Any Hint of the Scandal
By Anne E. Kornblut
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, February 25, 2007; A04

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has a new commandment for the 2008 presidential field: Thou shalt not mention anything related to the impeachment of her husband.

With a swift response to attacks from a former supporter last week, advisers to the New York Democrat offered a glimpse of their strategy for handling one of the most awkward chapters of her biography. They declared her husband’s impeachment in 1998 — or, more accurately, the embarrassing personal behavior that led to it — taboo, putting her rivals on notice and all but daring other Democrats to mention the ordeal again.

Rep John Tanner Can’t Be Serious

They keep producing more politicians that either have no sense what so ever or do not believe the public has any. The fine politician below posted on Hill.com’s Congress blog with this tripe. The man voted for H Con Res 114 in October 2002 and voted in favor of H Con Res 63 this year but wants to tell everyone how dedicated and committed he is to success in Afghanistan via efforts of NATO. How comforting and reassuring. If you really need any more information as to why this Congressman is wrong, then you are the intended target of his pathetic attempt to convey the idea that he supports anything related to combating terrorism.

John Edwards: Two Down, One to Go

Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, Health, Terrorism, Iraq, war, wordpress, Politics, campaign, Democrats, Afghanistan, United States, Edwards, Military on February 26th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

John EdwardsFormer Senator John Edwards is a goooood talker. Well after all you don’t become a successful trial attorney and win a trip to the Senate if you cannot speak well. It also requires a reasonable degree of intelligence and education. There is no good way to fairly determine what kind of a man John Edwards is. But there are some conclusions to be drawn on publically available information as to how John Edwards is campaigning.

A quick trip to his campaign website displayed the following items. Today was established by John Edwards’ campaign to be National Day of Health Care Action. According to the website it is a promotion to “spread the word” about John Edwards’ plan for universal healthcare. Reminiscent of baby boomers, sax playing, 70’s music and Bill and Hillary announcing their flagship campaign idea of healthcare reform. That was 1992 and it is now 2007 with no relief in sight. Some have said the reason it went nowhere was no one in Congress was interested. It was political fear of the medical industry. Big Pharma, Big Insurance, Big Doctors and Hospitals, Big Biotech and Big Campaign contributions was what they were worried about. Although a noble endeavor there is no reason to be optimistic about politics changing in this millennium.

DemsThe remainder of the frontpage is his position to end the war by capping funds and withdrawal, contribute to the campaign, a “hope slogan” and “meet John Edwards. John Edwards is successful and speaks well but so was Bill Clinton and look what happened there. Trying to remain neutral on John Edwards is very difficult. And that doesn’t include the Marcotte/McEwan debacle. There is no candidate at the John Edwards campaign headquarters. In review that means a no vote on John Edwards and Hillary Clinton. Barack Obama is the next question mark.

HRC on the Flip-flop

Posted in Terrorism, Iraq, war, wordpress, campaign, election, Democrats, Clinton, Afghanistan, United States, Iran, hillary, Military on February 26th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

The Democrats New Direction for America is adversely affecting Senator Hillary Clinton. Maybe the Clinonitits she spreads is beginning to backfire and even she has been infected. Whatever the cause she is even borrowing from that incredibly successful politician, flip-flop Kerry. First she tried to show she was “as tough as her male colleagues”. Then she tried to display “softening her image” according to Gloria Bolger. Now she is trying to amend her vote on authorizing the use of US armed forces in Iraq. Saying that if elected she will withdraw from Iraq. No conditions, just withdraw from Iraq. If so many currently in Congress had not joined up with civilian peaceniks in the public at large, a withdrawal from Iraq with victory or at least some dignity could have already been accomplished. But with all the chatter of weakness, that is all the world will remember if success is denied by attrition of spirit and the loss of steadfast determination.

To VP Cheney: This Ain’t Bird Huntin’

VP Dick CheneyThat AP’s text in this report contains the phrase “reiterating his administration’s long standing position” supports the claims that the “Main Stream Media” or “MSM” contributes to the dissemination of biased information for public consumption. Maybe that is how people get the notion that President Bush is a political puppet with VP Dick Cheney’s hand…….you know. The phrase mentioned is included in a sentence of Dick Cheney’s remarks. Keep up the good work AP.

That aside, would someone inform the Whitehouse that it is all well and good that all options are on the table from a negotiating standpoint but even if all the Iranian’s were not afforded a top level college education at taxpayer’s expense in a fine American institution

Cheney Huntinof higher learning, they are surely smart enough to know there is a limit to how many battles the American military can handle. Notwithstanding, the subverted peacenik noise around the country and the propensity of like-minded politicians to aid and abet the enemy for political purposes. The same people who can’t ever see enough visas for everyone in the world to come to America and take what they want and then complain. Maybe they learned that from the liberals. I just exceeded my self-imposed limit on per post personal rants. Someone please continue.

Cheney Says Military Option on Table Against Iran

Cheney, speaking at a joint news conference with Australia’s Prime Minister John Howard, said that the United States was working with it allies to persuade Iran to give up its nuclear weapons programs, and that it was Washington’s preference for that to happen peacefully.

“But all options are still on the table,” Cheney told reporters, reiterating his administration’s long-standing position on Iran.

GOP Rep Mary Fallin on Iraq

Posted in Terrorism, Iraq, war, wordpress, blog, Afghanistan, Congress, Legislation, Military, Rep Mary Fallin on February 26th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

This was quite refreshing. Is this the brief, polite comment of a freshman member of Congress feeling what each of us who never experienced political life would guess is how it works the first year? Ok, maybe a seasoned player from state or local politics just working the crowd, but that would indicate we’re all to cynical. Ok, she was the Lt Gov ad Governor from the fine state of OK. At risk of offending Rep Mary Fallin, the problem here is if you agree that more debate was necessary. The sad truth is those who oppose the war in Iraq or any war will favor any event that disrupts the mission. Those who favor the successful completion of the war view all those opposed as appeasers, or worse. It is another example of why details of war should be handled discretely and by the military, not the civilian population. Airing objections on the war is a disservice to the armed forces and provides assistance to the enemy.

But freshman Representative Mary Fallin should be encouraged to express her reaction on the process in Congress. Additionally, we encourage her to avoid strictly political arrangements and do her best to represent her constituents. It would be nice if all the freshman could form alliances and oppose the stodgy old boys club and complete an impressive session of work they can be proud of and not need to artificially enhance the value. You know, no putting lipstick on the pig. Do what is right not what is political. This country should support the troops in earnest and allow them to finish their mission. Leaving now solves nothing. It should be obvious and not require debate.

Passing of Iraq Resolution Lacked Substantive Debate

February 18th, 2007

Rep Mary FallinI’d rather have seen the resolution fail. But I was pleased that there were so few Republicans that supported it. I just wish we had the opportunity on the floor to actually debate these issues. A few minutes from each person to speak isn’t enough.
As a freshman, I’m very disappointed. I was elected to come to Congress to voice the concerns of my Oklahoman constituents. But we can’t speak freely because of constant suspension of House rules and closed debates.Permalink | Comment on this story at the Hill.com

Gregory Meeks’ Message to Insurgents

Posted in Terrorism, Iraq, war, wordpress, blog, Afghanistan, Military, Rep Gregory Meeks on February 25th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

The following excerpt is from what is basically an excerpt from Rep Gregory Meeks at the Hill.com and more than should be shown. Rep Meeks is not sending a loud message to President Bush but to the insurgents in Iraq. Rep Meeks rhetoric is just the kind of politically charged damage that is typical of a dead political party. If this is the Democratic idea of a new direction then it is plain for all to see the direction is self-serving and entirely irresponsible. You voice an opposition to the war like anyone not sharing your view likes war. No one likes war. The only thing worse than war is losing war. And that is exactly what you will get if you continue chanting the bankrupt policy of the New Democratic Party. The old one was bad too but it was better than this new one.

JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE WRITES IT DOES NOT MAKE IT TRUE

Press Release | February 19, 2007

Barack ObamaToday, the Los Angeles Times published an article entitled “Fellow Activists Say Obama’s Memoir Has Too Many I’s” which implies that Obama partially fictionalized events in Altgeld Gardens in the 1980s in order to enhance the role he played in the community there.

The implication is false, and the article is misleading. At no point in the work does Obama take “singular” credit for initiating and leading efforts on the Atlgeld asbestos problem. In fact, those who worked with him confirm that he preferred a background role in the matter, refusing to claim credit or even be in pictures taken of the community group. However, despite the fact that he shunned a public role, Obama’s work is clearly remembered by Altgeld residents, other organizers, and the reporter that the LA Times and others credit with bringing the problem of asbestos in Chicago’s public housing to light.

LA TIMES: Obama Says He Initiated and Led Efforts That Thrust Altgeld’s Asbestos Problem Into the HeadlinesFACT: Obama Helped Residents In Altgeld Organize, But Stayed in Background

Yvonne Lloyd Worked With Obama In Altgeld Gardens: “He Always Stayed in the Background…Behind the Scenes.” Yvonne Lloyd, a mother of 11 who was the basis for the character “Shirley” in Dreams from My Father, worked with Obama during the effort to remove asbestos from the Altgeld Garden apartments. She remembers that Obama “trained us to be leaders…I would come to him with an issue and he would help us figure it out [but] he always stayed in the background. And we used to say to him, ‘Barack, come on and do this,’ and he would say no. Even when we took pictures, he always stayed behind the scenes, because it was our community.” Lloyd attended the meetings with the Chicago Housing Authority described in Dreams from My Father and remembers working with Obama on the issue, saying that he “helped us make presentations, but he never scripted us. Because that’s [scripting] not telling the truth. And if I’m telling the truth, I can tell it anywhere.” [Conversation with Yvonne Lloyd, 2/9/07]

Linda Randle, A Community Organizer In The Ida B. Wells Project, Worked With Obama: “He Didn’t Take Credit for Anything.” Linda Randle worked in the Ida B. Wells housing project, which also had problems with asbestos, as a community organizer. She filed a complaint with the EPA and worked with Martha Allen, a reporter for the Chicago Reporter, to bring the public’s attention to the issue. Randle, who knew Obama through his work in Altgeld, said “Barack and I would get together and we would talk… When he was having problems [with the work], we would talk about it – he would ask, ‘What do I need to do to open up my head to hear what they’re saying to me?’…But he didn’t take credit for anything.” [Chicago Reporter, June 1986; Conversation with Linda Randle, 2/16/07]

LA TIMES: Others Say…That Credit for Pushing Officials To Deal With Asbestos Goes to A Pre-Existing Group and A Local Newspaper Called the Chicago ReporterFACT: Reporter That Broke the Asbestos Story For the Chicago Reporter Gives Obama, Others Credit for The Action Taken By the Housing Authority

Martha Allen, Reporter With the Chicago Reporter: Proud of The Work She Did on Asbestos, But Community Organizers including Barack Obama Were Working On The Issue “Long Before” She Raised It. Martha Allen, who did the original reporting on the issue of asbestos in Chicago’s public housing projects in 1986, said that although she’s proud of the reporting she did for the Chicago Reporter, she can’t take credit for the action that was eventually taken by the Chicago Housing Authority. “That [taking credit] implies that I opened the eyes of folks in Altgeld [on this issue] and that’s not true. Obama [and others like Linda Randle] were working on this long before I got there.” [Conversation with Martha Allen, 2/16/07]

Chicago Reporter Articles Credited With Raising Issue Do Not Mention Hazel Johnson or Her Group, People for Community Recovery. Martha Allen’s reports on the asbestos issue in 1986, which Rep. Bobby Rush credits with raising the profile of the asbestos problem in Altgeld Gardens and Ida B. Wells, do not mention Hazel Johnson or People for Community Recovery, Johnson’s group. Linda Randle, who filed the initial complaint with the EPA, is mentioned in the story Allen published in June. [The Chicago Reporter, June 1986 and July, 1986]
Linda Randle Remembers Working Closely With Obama on the Asbestos Issue. Randle, who knew Obama through his work in Altgeld, said “Barack was working with the women in Altgeld [on asbestos] and he brought some of them to talk to me, and then we put together a meeting for me to go talk to them in Altgeld.” Although the residents of Ida B. Wells and Altgeld Gardens failed to join forces on the issue, Randle and Obama continued to work together. [Conversation with Linda Randle, 2/16/07]

Chicago Reporter Article Credit Protests in Altgeld Gardens With Helping Raise Public Awareness of the Asbestos Problem in Public Housing. In addition, Allen writes in the July edition of the Chicago Reporter that the Chicago Housing Authority’s decision to remove asbestos from the Ida B. Wells Extension Homes was triggered by her story in June and “by the protests of residents at another South Side housing development, Altgeld Gardens [at] 130th Street and Langley Avenue.” [The Chicago Reporter, July 1986]

LA TIMES: Hazel Johnson’s Role Was So Prominent That It Was “Offensive” To Tell the Story of Altgeld Gardens Without Including HerFACT: Johnson Was An Activist, Not An Organizer; CHA Action Came After Obama, Randle, and Others Organized Residents Around the Issue

Johnson Raised the Issue With Public Health Experts in “Early 1980s”; No Action Was Taken Until 1986. Johnson raised the asbestos issue with Regnal Jones, a “scientist that [she was trying to get] to study possible links between the ailments that residents reported to her and [asbestos]…Jones visited Johnson in the early 1980s recalls sitting in her kitchen as she laid out hundreds of index cards listing the illnesses throughout Altgeld.” However, no action was taken to address the asbestos in Ida B. Wells or Altgeld Gardens until 1986. [Los Angeles Times, 2/19/07; Chicago Reporter, July 1986]Jerry Kellman: Obama Pulled Together A Variety of People That Others Could Not. Jerry Kellman, who was the basis for the character “Marty” in Dreams from my Father, was Obama’s supervisor at the Developing Communities Project. When asked about the role that Johnson played in the asbestos work at Altgeld, Kellman said, “Barack pulled together a variety of people that someone like Hazel would not have been able to do at that point. Barack’s book is very accurate.” [Conversation with Jerry Kellman, 2/7/07]

Loretta Augustine-Herron: Hazel Johnson Was An Activist, Not An Organizer. Loretta Augustine-Herron, who was the basis for the character “Angela” in Dreams from My Father, was present at the initial meeting with the Chicago Housing Authority to discuss the issue of asbestos in the Altgeld Garden apartments. When asked about the role that Johnson played in the asbestos work at Altgeld, Augustine-Herron said, “Hazel was there [for the asbestos work]…[she] might have been an activist. But she was not an organizer.” [Conversations with Loretta Augustine-Herron, 2/9/07, 2/14/07]

Augustine-Herron: Before Obama, “There Really Wasn’t Anything Happening.” Augustine-Herron said that “There was work [on the asbestos issue in Altgeld] going on before Barack got there, but before him, there wasn’t really anything happening. He really came in and started building a base and empowering people [Conversation With Loretta Augustine-Herron, 2/14/07]

Johnson And Obama Worked Together On Asbestos. “Altgeld Gardens resident Hazel Johnson, 69, worked with Obama in the Developing Communities Project on pushing the Chicago Housing Authority to remove asbestos from public housing and other issues. She remembers Obama renting a bus to take a group of residents downtown to protest at CHA headquarters. ‘He even got us coffee and doughnuts,” she said. “And he didn’t have to do that.’” [Chicago Sun Times, 10/3/04]

LA TIMES: Obama Painted Altgeld Gardens Residents As “Pathetic,” “Meek,” And “Confused”FACT: Obama Wrote of Residents With Respect; Saw Parallels Between His Personal Story and Theirs

Obama Wrote Admiringly of Women He Worked With in Altgeld, Respected the Challenges They Faced. In Dreams from My Father, Obama wrote, “They were spirited, good-humored women [the women he worked with at Developing Communities], those three, women who—without husbands to help—somehow managed to raise sons and daughters, juggle an assortment of part-time jobs and small business schemes, and organize Girl Scout troops, fashion shows, and summer camps for the parade of children that wandered through the church every day.” [Dreams from My Father, p.167]

Obama Saw Parallels Between His Personal Story and Altgeld Resident. “Sometimes I would stop by Mary’s house just to say hello, drawn perhaps by the loneliness I sensed there, and the easy parallels between my own mother and Mary; and between myself and Mary’s daughters, such sweet and pretty girls whose lives were so much more difficult than mine had ever been, with grandparents who shunned them, black classmates who teased them, all the poison in the air.” [Dreams from My Father, p.176]

Obama’s Army Sarcastic Reference To Small Turnout For First Visit to Housing Authority. Despite days of organizing, the turnout for his visit to the Chicago Housing Authority was smaller than Obama expected. He wrote, “…I counted only eight heads in the yellow bus parked in front of the school. Bernadette and I stood in the parking lot trying to recruit other parents as they came to pick up their children…When Angela, Mona, and Shirley arrived to see how things were shaping up, I insisted they ride with us to lend moral support. Everyone looked depressed, everyone except Tyrone and Jewel, who were busy making faces at Mr. Lucas, the only father in the group. Dr. Collier came up beside me. ‘I guess this is it,’ I said. ‘Better than I expected…Obama’s Army,’ she said. [Dreams from My Father, p. 238],
