Hillary Rodham Clinton: Buying Women, Selling Votes
Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Clinton, hillary on July 31st, 2007 by Stanford MatthewsThe headlines for one Hillary Rodham Clinton that are presented here today are not favorable media coverage. More evidence that she is willing to stoop to buying women’s votes and selling the future of the country to foreign interests.
Clinton focuses on female bonding
Club44 is Clinton’s women’s outreach program.
According to a non-partisan womens’ group millions of women are not registered to vote and millions more are registered but did not vote in 2004. A Clinton aide said she will focus on single women voters this fall. And in a comment from Salon, Elizabeth Edwards said she is not convinced Hillary would be a better advocate for women than her husband. USA Today/Gallup says only 41% of women would vote for Clinton.
With the possible exception of USA Today/Gallup, all the sources are Democratic party related. Not the kind of information you would expect to be coming from those sources. It clearly indicates the women’s vote is not a slam dunk for Clinton.
No matter who may think open borders, outsourcing and importing labor is a good thing for America, the truth is any American who must work for a living as an employee is getting the short end from their own government when politicians cozy up to foreign interests or those who have become legal citizens with a focus on exporting America and importing the interests of foreign governments on US soil.
Say all you want about the melting pot, a tradition of immigration and the pursuit of the American dream, the details on immigration, legal or illegal, bear little resemblance to the process in the past.
Now immigration is strictly the realm of money and greed. Immigration lawyers are only interested in bloated fees for service or being party to larger abuses in immigration. Politicians think they can buy future votes or please employers who circumvent competition for labor by importing a temporarily cheaper alternative. Those entering the country illegally provide incentive for other illegal enterprises. The cost and burden to American society will have no limits until reaching catastrophic consequences.
And Hillary is right in their with the rest of them pandering for votes and other sordid partnerships that risk this country’s future. This country was known for leading the world but if this trend continues it will be evident some were willing to sell the country to the rest of the world.

Romney Vision vs Edwards
Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, youtube, GOP, Democrats, Video, romney, Edwards on July 31st, 2007 by Stanford MatthewsLower Taxes For All Americans: The Romney Vision Vs. Edwards

Thursday, Jul 26, 2007
“[Y]ou ought to be able to save your money and you ought to have a special tax rate [on your savings]… the tax rate ought to be absolutely zero. … [Edwards is] going to announce today that he’s in favor of a plan that let’s you save $250 tax free. That’s not going to pay for college, or retirement, or a car – maybe a bike…”
– Gov. Mitt Romney (Gov. Mitt Romney, Delivered Remarks, Des Moines, IA, 7/26/07)
THE ROMNEY VISION: YOU KEEP MORE OF YOUR MONEY AND ARE ENCOURAGED TO INVEST FOR YOUR FUTURE
As President, Governor Romney Would Strongly Support Lower Taxes:
Today, Governor Romney Highlighted The Difference Between His Vision For Lowering Taxes And The Democrat Plans To Raise Taxes. GOV. MITT ROMNEY: “There’s a fundamental difference. Our democratic friends think that the best thing that you can do for our future is to give more money to the government. And my view is the best thing you can do economically for our future is to invest in our future by investing in enterprises… We create more economic vitality by our people investing than by having our government to do it.” (Gov. Mitt Romney, Delivered Remarks, Des Moines, IA, 7/26/07)

Governor Romney Believes Raising Taxes Is The Wrong Direction For America. GOV. MITT ROMNEY: “Raising taxes is the opposite of giving people the freedom they need to make their own life choices. Raising taxes hurts working people.” (Governor Mitt Romney, Remarks At The National Press Club, Washington, DC, 7/14/04)
Governor Romney Would Eliminate Taxes On Investment To Help Foster Saving And Investment. GOV. MITT ROMNEY: “I’d like middle-income Americans to be able to save their money and not have to pay any tax at all on interest, dividends or capital gains. And by the way, we’re all talking about –” MSNBC’s CHRIS MATTHEWS: “A zero rate on caps?” ROMNEY: “Zero rate on capital gains for middle-income Americans…” (MSNBC, Republican Presidential Candidate Debate, Simi Valley, CA, 5/3/07)
- Governor Romney: “You Don’t Create Economic Prosperity By Raising Taxes.” (John J. Miller, “Matinee Mitt,” National Review, 6/20/05)
Governor Romney Was The First Potential 2008 Presidential Candidate To Sign The “Taxpayer Protection Pledge” Promising To Oppose Any Effort To Increase Taxes. “Demonstrating his commitment to oppose any effort to increase taxes on the American people, Governor Romney has signed Americans For Tax Reform’s ‘Taxpayer Protection Pledge.’ As part of his pledge, Governor Romney will ‘oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates’ and ‘oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits.’ Governor Romney believes that by keeping taxes low and simplifying the tax code, we can grow the economy and enhance American competitiveness. These fundamental economic beliefs and principles led Governor Romney to become the first potential 2008 presidential candidate to sign Americans For Tax Reform’s ‘Taxpayer Protection Pledge.’” (Romney For President Exploratory Committee, “Governor Mitt Romney Signs ‘Taxpayer Protection Pledge’,” Press Release, 1/4/07)
- Governor Romney’s Signed Pledge:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAaMunnE4XA
Governor Romney Would Make The Bush Tax Cuts Permanent: GOV. MITT ROMNEY: “It’s absolutely critical that we don’t have that massive tax hike and instead we make the Bush tax cuts permanent.” (Governor Mitt Romney, Remarks At The Detroit Economic Club, Detroit, MI, 2/7/07)
Governor Romney Proposes Lowering Tax Rates For All Americans. GOV. MITT ROMNEY: “We should strive to keep marginal tax rates on America’s families and businesses no higher than those imposed by our major global competitors. We should end tax penalties against saving and investment, and promote fairness and simplicity by ending special interest loopholes and lowering tax rates for all Americans.” (Romney For President, “Governor Romney’s Remarks At The Club For Growth,” Press Release, 3/29/07)
EDWARDS: THE GOVERNMENT TAKES MORE OF YOUR MONEY AND TELLS YOU HOW TO INVEST IT
John Edwards’ New Tax Plan, Introduced Today, Nearly Doubles The Capital Gains Tax Rate To 28%. “Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, once again seeking to drive the 2008 campaign debate within his party, will today propose raising the capital gains tax rate to 28% from 15%, and use the money to finance tax cuts for middle and lower income families.” (John Harwood, “John Edwards Proposes Raising Capital-Gains Tax Rate,” The Wall Street Journal, 7/26/07)
Edwards Will Tax Every Family’s Investment And Savings Above $250. “While raising the capital gains levy to that level, which Edwards points out was a rate once signed into law by President Ronald Reagan, Edwards proposes a series of breaks for those not currently thriving in the US economy: –an exemption for each family’s first $250 in interest, capital gains and dividend income, to help low-income families accumulate wealth.” (John Harwood, “John Edwards Proposes Raising Capital-Gains Tax Rate,” The Wall Street Journal, 7/26/07)
Edwards Will Keep The Death Tax And Roll Back Bush Tax Cuts. EDWARDS: “If we truly believe in a tax code that values work instead of wealth, then we cannot completely eliminate the estate tax. … As president, I will repeal the Bush tax cuts for families earning more than $200,000 a year.” (Sen. John Edwards, Remarks As Prepared For Delivery, Des Moines, IA, 7/26/07)
Edwards Has Been Calling For Higher Taxes Out On The Campaign Trail. EDWARDS: “I would pay for [healthcare plan] by getting rid of Bush’s tax cuts for people who make over $200,000 a year.” (CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” 6/6/07)
- Edwards Wants A Windfall Profits Tax And Higher Capital Gains Taxes. EDWARDS: “What I said is I’m for a windfall profits tax. I’m for getting rid of George Bush’s tax cuts for people who make over $200,000 a year. I’m also for looking at whether the capital gains structure that exists in this country today is one that makes sense. It is somewhat out of whack with what ordinary workers pay in terms of their marginal income tax rate. Fifteen percent, which is the capital gains rate, versus marginal rates for a lot of working people that are significantly higher than that. The worry and the concern that I think people like me would have to take into account is we don’t want to see that capital fleeing America. We want to see that capital invested in America. But I think it is certainly something worth looking at.” (ABC’s “This Week,” 5/6/07)
Pelosi in July: New Misdirection for America

.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to spread the far left liberal agenda as documented by press releases from her own taxpayer funded website. This is the third installment of Pelosi in July. An entire month’s worth of propaganda from someone charged with performing her duties in the public interest. The first reference is yet another statement equating the Democratic party’s support of amnesty for illegal aliens as some great contribution to the American melting pot and claiming it poses no risk or threat to the country Pelosi is supposed to protect. The final irony is she made the statements while hosting an immigration workshop for prospective applicants for citizenship the legal status of which are still unknown. Pelosi said….
“Today’s event makes clear that America gains strength from its newest citizens and immigration reform will ensure that America keeps growing stronger.”
Among other things that was a pitch for continuing chain migration and a claim that the defeated amnesty legislation would have no risk attached. All Pelosi was concerned with is providing cheap foreign labor for her law breaking employers and law breaking illegals at the country’s expense both in money and safety. This is a reminder that legal immigration when properly controlled is fine. Illegal immigration is not and that is one thing wrong with the Democratic party. They embrace amnesty. That is simply wrong. Arguing it is the American dream is also wrong.
Pelosi’s July 21st press release supporting import restrictions on Burma is cheap politics for anyone. Making a political statement that takes one side of an issue in a foreign country by threatening import restrictions in this case is meaningless. Does refusing imports from ‘Burma’ (currently called Myanmar) hurt anyone other than the very people the restrictions are designed to support? Like Americans cannot live without imports from Myanmar.
Pelosi again refers to minimum wage as some Congressional accomplishment. Another failed initiative from the failed 100 hour agenda only passed as a compromise to complete the Supplemental Appropriations bill sponsored by Democrat David Obey. To get the money to continue to support the troops, the Bush Administration agreed to the minimum wage addition which is a round robin of money shuffling that stiffs the average taxpayer. Force employers to raise the minimum wage and give the employers tax breaks to offset that. Say hello to costs passed on to consumers whether there are tax breaks or not. Not to mention it does nothing to lift people above minimum wage. Another failure of family, education and politicians in this country. We should fix that some time.
Pelosi’s take on the 9/11 bill is also wrong, right out of the gate. The bill will do nothing to protect America. The most it can do is authorize spending and specify how that money will be spent. There is absolutely nothing about a spending bill that protects anyone. Part of the problem with Congress is they think passing legislation fixes everything. It fixes nothing. Immigration law that is not enforced fixes nothing. 9/11 related legislation fixes nothing unless there is a meaningful follow up procedure for measuring and correcting problems and enhancing any success there might be. Just passing a law and forgetting about the problem it was claimed to solve, again, does nothing.
That anyone in government needs someone to remind them to do their job is disappointing at best. That again the buck was passed when reports of gross negligence became public about not providing adequate health care for military personnel is arguably criminal. As large and expensive as the United States government has become, the fact that active duty and retired members of the United States armed forces could be neglected and to the degree they are is a travesty beyond description. The scrambling to find a scapegoat and not admit failure and offer pathetic excuses and fixes for this problem is also an indicator of what is wrong with government and the politicians that run it. That includes all parties.
The remainder of Pelosi’s July press releases are either more political posturing, pandering or obligatory remarks on notable events or memorable persons. This is the substance of the Democratic party’s claim for a new direction for America. Empty slogans and empty promises followed by more political posturing and the continuation of the swamp that won’t get drained and the culture of corruption that will be maintained. So Nancy, how’s that new direction working for you?

Farm Bill Milkin’ the Taxpayer
Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, wordpress, Politics, lobbyist, Agriculture, Congress, Business, Legislation on July 31st, 2007 by Stanford MatthewsImagine that. Pork in a farm bill sounds like a match made in heaven. Congressman Kind represents Wisconsin. Do you suppose agriculture is important in Wisconsin, in terms of the state economy? Likewise the excerpt below from a agricultural publication features an opinion summing up their view of the booty offered.
Price supports, loss contracts, import limits, product protections, price regulations, export incentives and two funding sources to pay for environmental and energy related improvements for agricultural interests at taxpayer’s expense. Front end, back end and all the way through the taxpayer gets stiffed. If not already, sympathy for those involved in agriculture may diminish as the farm bill limits risk and competition for the farmer but either way the consumer pays.
There is something basically wrong with that. Trade association, interest group, special interest group or lobbyist, no matter what you call it that is pandering, bribery, corruption or some equally dishonest method for passing legislation. Bring all the arguments you want. To say this type of process is to save the family farm and the American dream or way of life is a massive load of fertilizer. Those messages have been carefully crafted from a time when they may have been honest and sincere but those days are long gone.

Scrap the whole bill and start over or fo gedda bau dit.

Hiring is not the problem, ownership is.
Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, wordpress, Politics, disclosure, ethics, America, United States, Agriculture, Law, Foreign Affairs, Congress, Business, Legislation on July 31st, 2007 by Stanford Matthews Democrats Would Penalize Companies for Employing Americans
By Rep. Paul Gillmor
July 27th, 2007
The statement in the excerpt above from Congressman Gillmor is a good example of ‘who the hell knows?’ While the Congressman attributes tax disincentives for hiring American workers to the Democrats, the question that might be reasonable to ask is why does the US government allow foreign ownership of domestic companies? Or why have so many American companies been allowed to merge with or be bought by foreign interests? It was not that long ago the excuse to forbid China from buying domestic energy companies was the strategic nature of the product and its vital importance to national security. With each event comes a new argument. But the events are similar and when placed side by side all of the excuses do not add up properly.

The main thrust of the farm bill has been reported as limiting farm subsidies and other assistance to farms producing revenue on the lower end of the spectrum and not allowing wealthy farmers or large successful commercial operations to participate. Providing assistance only for those who really need assistance is a good thing. Stopping abuse of such offers by restricting its application is also a good thing. With Congressman Gillmor’s complaint it is safe to assume this legislation is not free from lobbyist and politician abuse before everyone else gets involved.
What this post by the Congressman emphasizes is the need for ethics and oversight that Congress continuously refuses to address. Contrary to Speaker Pelosi’s opinion, there has been no improvement in Washington politics as regards ethics and oversight in at least several decades.

Romney on Protecting Children
Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, GOP, internet, disclosure, ethics, oversight, romney on July 30th, 2007 by Stanford MatthewsPolicy Briefing: Guarding Our Children On Their Computers
Thursday, Jul 26, 2007FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Kevin Madden (857) 288-6390

Governor Romney’s Initiative To Guard Our Children:
Today, In Iowa, Governor Mitt Romney Announced A New Initiative To Prevent Pornography From Reaching Children On Their Computers. Children accessing pornography online is a major problem but one easily solved through determined action. As President, Governor Romney will work with computer and software companies to ensure that every home computer has effective software to filter out unwanted pornography.
- Governor Romney Will Work To Ensure Every Parent Has Access To Software Filters That Guard Their Children From Online Pornography. Numerous software programs exist that prevent unsolicited content from popping up on Internet browsers and filter websites a child may visit. With one in three youths reporting unwanted exposure to sexual material, the challenge is getting these tools into the hands of parents. To that effect, Governor Romney also will work with computer and software companies to make sure all new computers have optional parental control software filters that are ready and easy to use during setup. Governor Romney will also promote and increase awareness of available parental control filtering products for existing computers.
- Responsible Parents Are The First Line Of Defense In Guarding Our Children From Online Pornography. The most important work being done in America today is the work being done by responsible parents inside the four walls of the American home. We need to inform them and give them the tools they need to protect their children, especially while their children use the Internet to communicate with those outside the home.
Governor Romney’s Agenda To Protect Our Children:
Working To Ensure Parents Have The Adequate Tools To Protect Their Children Is Only One Part Of Governor Romney’s Agenda To Guard Our Children Online.
Governor Romney Has Proposed The “One-Strike, You’re Ours” Law For Those Convicted Of Preying On Children Using The Internet. As President, Governor Romney will propose new, tougher federal penalties for first-time offenders who use the Internet to sexually assault children, including stiff mandatory jail time to be followed by lifetime tracking by Global Positioning Satellite (GPS). This will represent a “One-Strike, You’re Ours” law for child predators.
- By Enacting Tougher Laws, The Federal Government Will Be Following The Lead Of States Across The Country. Governor Romney’s “One-Strike, You’re Ours” Law will impose on the federal level the same tough sentences that states like Florida and California have put in place with “Jessica’s Law.” In Massachusetts, Governor Romney successfully fought to put the photos of the state’s most dangerous sex offenders on the Internet, and he signed legislation to make it easier to extend the civil commitments of sex offenders. Yet, most federal laws are not tough enough when sentencing a first-time offender for sex crimes against a child.
- The Growing Threat Of Crimes Committed Against Children Via The Internet Is A Disturbing Trend. In February 2006, the Department of Justice (DOJ) launched Project Safe Childhood, an initiative designed to protect children as they navigate the Internet. The Bush administration correctly recognized that as technology advances and the Internet becomes more accessible, there is a real danger that computer-facilitated crimes committed against children will continue to rise.
- Every Day We Are Reminded About The Growing Threat Posed To Our Children. A new study suggests that 85% of convicted child pornography offenders have also sexually abused children. Also, according to news reports, MySpace.com identified and removed more than 29,000 registered sex offenders from its online site. Sexual predators are going high-tech and so must our laws.

Romney Agenda Trumps Dem Liberals
Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, GOP, Democrats, Clinton, obama, romney, Edwards, Bill Richardson, Dodd on July 30th, 2007 by Stanford MatthewsThe Romney Vision: Seeing Is Believing - The Romney Agenda Trumps Dem Liberal Debate Pandering

Tuesday, Jul 24, 2007
“[Democrats] think about big government, big taxes and Big Brother. That’s the same course Europe has taken over the last couple of decades that has led to a level of growth far below our own.” – Gov. Mitt Romney (Lisa Rossi, “Romney Blasts Obama, Others,” The Des Moines Register, 7/21/07)
Romney’s Vision Of A Stronger Defense Vs. Defeatist Democrats
Gov. Romney Stresses The Importance Of Winning In Iraq And Defeating Radical Islam Globally. “The congressional debate in Washington has largely, and myopically, focused on whether troops should be redeployed from Iraq to Afghanistan, as if these were isolated issues. Yet the jihad is much broader than any one nation, or even several nations. … The jihadist threat is the defining challenge of our generation and is symptomatic of a range of new global realities.” (Gov. Mitt Romney, “Rising To A New Generation Of Global Challenges,” Foreign Affairs, July/August 2007)
But Sen. Hillary Clinton Claims The U.S. Has Already Lost In Afghanistan To Al Qaeda And Bin Laden. SEN. HILLARY CLINTON: “We’ve got to figure out what we’re doing in Iraq, where our troops are stretched thin, and Afghanistan, where we’re losing the fight to al Qaeda and bin Laden.” (CNN/YouTube, Democrat Presidential Candidate Debate, Charleston, SC, 7/23/07)
While Sen. Barack Obama Would Jump At The Chance To Meet With Dictators In Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba And North Korea. YOUTUBE QUESTION: “…would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?” … SENATOR BARACK OBAMA: “I would. And the reason is this, that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them — which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration — is ridiculous.” (CNN/YouTube, Democrat Presidential Candidate Debate, Charleston, SC, 7/23/07)
Romney’s Vision Of A Stronger Economy Vs. Tax-And-Spend Democrats
Gov. Romney Believes Lower Taxes Lead To A Stronger American Economy. GOV. MITT ROMNEY: “Raising taxes will slow down the economy, will make it more and more difficult to create jobs here. It’s the wrong direction. The right direction is always to bring tax rates down. If you believe that the strength of America flows from government, then you want more taxes. But if you believe that the strength of America flows from the American people, you want to hold their taxes down for themselves and for the employers that employ them.” (Fox News Channel’s “Hannity & Colmes,” 4/4/07)
But Sen. Joe Biden Would Raise Taxes, Rolling Back The Bush Tax Cuts. SEN. JOE BIDEN: “First of all, change the tax structure. We are giving people tax breaks who don’t need it. The top 1 percent got an $85 billion a year tax break. It is not needed. My dad used to have an expression — don’t tell me what you value; show me your budget. And the budget we have here is we all dance around it. We need more revenue to be able to pay for the things the governor and everybody else talks about. And there’s only one way to do it. You either raise taxes or take tax cuts away from people who don’t need them. I’d take them away from people who don’t need them.” (CNN/YouTube, Democrat Presidential Candidate Debate, Charleston, SC, 7/23/07)
While Sen. John Edwards Would Create A Big Government-Run Health Insurance Program, Paid For By Taxpayers. SEN. JOHN EDWARDS: “No, because the only way to provide universal coverage is to mandate that everyone be covered. But I want to say, you know, I came out with a universal plan several months ago. A couple of months later, Senator Obama came out with a plan. He’s made a very serious proposal, and I’m not casting aspersions on his plan. I think it’s a very serious proposal. It just doesn’t cover everybody. The only way to cover everybody is to mandate it.” (CNN/YouTube, Democrat Presidential Candidate Debate, Charleston, SC, 7/23/07)
Romney’s Vision Of Stronger Families Vs. Out-Of-The-Mainstream Democrats
Gov. Romney Believes A Stronger American Family Leads To A Stronger America. GOV. MITT ROMNEY: “How is the American family made stronger? With marriage before children. With a mother and a father in the life of every child. With healthcare that is affordable and portable. With schools that succeed. With taxes that are lower. And with leaders who strive to demonstrate enduring values and morality.” (Gov. Mitt Romney, Presidential Announcement, Dearborn, MI, 2/13/07)
But Sen. Barack Obama Supports Sex Education For Kindergarteners, And Wrongly Claimed That Gov. Mitt Romney Does, Too. CNN’s ANDERSON COOPER: “Senator Obama, Mitt Romney has accused you this week of saying that 5-year-old children should be getting sex education. Was he right?” SEN. BARACK OBAMA: “Ironically, this was actually a proposal that he himself said he supported when he was running for governor of Massachusetts. … I’ve got a 9-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old daughter. And I want them to know if somebody is doing something wrong to them, encroaching on their privacy, that they should come talk to me or my wife. And we’ve had that conversation, but not every parent is going to have that conversation with their child, and I think it’s important that every child does, to make sure that they’re not subject to the sexual predators.” (CNN/YouTube, Democrat Presidential Candidate Debate, Charleston, SC, 7/23/07)
- In Fact, Sen. Obama Specifically Called For Sex-Ed In Kindergarten, Which Gov. Romney Did Not Support. “The Romney campaign is saying there is a difference here. Kevin Madden, Romney’s national spokesman says, ‘Obama specifically advocated sex-ed for small children in kindergarten.’ Undaunted today, Romney said the following in South Carolina about Obama: ‘Senator Obama is wrong if he thinks science-based sex education has any place in kindergarten.’” (David Brody, “Kindergarten Cop: Romney Versus Obama,” CBN’s The Brody File, www.cbn.com/CBNnews/198676.aspx, Posted 7/19/07)
- The Legislation Sen. Obama Voted For In Illinois Went Even Further – Calling For STD Prevention To Be Taught In Kindergarten. Illinois Senate Bill 99, which Obama supported in the 93rd Assembly (2003-2004), reads, in part: “…whenever such courses of instruction are provided in any of grades K through 12, then such courses also shall include age appropriate instruction on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, including the prevention, transmission and spread of HIV.” (IL General Assembly Website, www.ilga.gov/legislation/, Accessed 7/24/07)
Sen Chris Dodd: Outperformed by Ordinary Citizen
Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, youtube, Democrats, News Media, Opinion, Dodd on July 30th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews
What does it say when an ordinary citizen asks a candidate a question and a feeble attempt to address the concern gets no real play from the media? It is not hypercritical to refer to a candidate’s answer as feeble. There is nothing more important in the world of politics than competing for the most powerful job on the planet. It should be expected that a candidate be schooled, trained, prepared and in every way up to the task. The stakes are high and the history of such events reflects the development of the machinery and mechanisms in place and commonly used to transform ordinary human beings into a meticulously crafted and tested examples of Presidential leadership. A candidate must be able to ‘bring it’ at a debate. If you do not have game there, where will you?
This exchange between an ordinary citizen and Senator Chris Dodd is an example of a poke and hope candidate. When the citizen turns in a performance superior to the candidate, it is obvious that decades of time invested in politics for the candidate provided little in terms of ‘bringing it’. Got game? Got milk? Got anything?
COOPER: Our first question tonight is Zach Kempf in Provo, Utah.
QUESTION: What’s up? I’m running out of tape; I have to hurry.
So my question is: We have a bunch of leaders who can’t seem to
do their job. And we pick people based on the issues they that they
represent, but then they get in power and they don’t do anything about
it anyway. You’re going to spend this whole night talking about your views
on issues, but the issues don’t matter if when you get in power
nothing’s going to get done.We have a Congress and a president with, like, a 30 percent
approval rating, so clearly we don’t think they’re doing a good job.
What’s going to make you any more effectual, beyond all the platitudes
and the stuff we’re used to hearing? I mean, be honest with us. How
are you going to be any different?COOPER: Senator Dodd, you’ve been in Congress more than 30
years. Can you honestly say you’re any different?
DODD: Well, I think so.
First of all, thank you for inviting us here in The Citadel.
It’s great to be here at this wonderful college, university.Certainly, I think it’s a very important question one ought to be
asking because, while hope and confidence and optimism are clearly
very important, I think experience matters a great deal — the
experience people bring to their candidacy, the ideas, the bold ideas
that they’ve championed over the years, whether or not they were
successful in advancing those ideas and able to bring people together.DODD: I’m very proud of the fact that, over my 26 years in the
Senate, I’ve authored landmark legislation, the Family and Medical
Leave Act, child care legislation, reform of financial institutions. In every case, those are new ideas, bold ideas, that I campaigned
on and then were able to achieve in the United States Senate by
bringing Republicans as well as Democrats together around those
issues. That’s what’s missing, more than anything else, I think, right
now, is the ability to bring people together to get the job done.COOPER: But if someone really wants a change, are you the guy to
give it to them?DODD: Well, I think they ought to look back. Speeches are easy
to make and rhetoric is easy to expose here. But I think the idea of
looking back and saying, “What have you done?” –if you want to get a
good idea of where someone is going to lead or how they’re going to
lead, I think it’s very appropriate to say, “What have you done? Show
me. Demonstrate to me the ability to get these things done that
you’ve championed in the past.”
The first sentence in Dodd’s reply is a real confidence builder. He says, ‘ Well, I think so’, in response to whether or not he is really any different to other politicians. He says he thinks experience matters a great deal. Of course you would if your definition of experience simply means time spent in the Senate and in this case 26 years. In addition Dodd enlightens us that ‘the ideas, the bold ideas that they’ve championed over the years, whether or not they were
successful…’. Maybe he was referring to that famed Family Medical Leave Act. When Dodd says he has authored legislation do you really believe he actually put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard? How about the likelihood that staff or other resources actually composed the legislation and the Senator merely presented the work of others upon his direction?
Below is some publicly available information from which you can draw your own conclusions. But the conclusion at this blog is that Dodd is credited with sponsoring and introducing what may be companion legislation in the Senate in 1989 on the same date House legislation was introduced. Major actions recorded on both pieces show the Senate portion shelved as the House version was unable to overcome Presidential veto. President Bush 41 was in office and the GOP majority did not happen until 1994.
The legislation was again introduced by others in 1993 during Clinton’s first month and passed. So how much did Dodd really have to do with this bill?
Senator Dodd, this was a look back and no compelling evidence was found to indicate your bringing people together or championing bold ideas had any results. Mentioning a vague, brief list of accomplishments that cannot be effectively challenged without a great deal of effort by others is a lame presentation. Not real prepared for debates, are you Senator? If you are this unprepared for a debate and offer no convincing evidence of your qualifications, why would anyone vote for you as President?

Israel OK with Arms Deal
Posted in Public Affairs, Israel, wordpress, Politics, United States, Foreign Affairs, Military on July 30th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews Israel Says No Objections to US Gulf Arms Deal
By Jim Teeple
Jerusalem
29 July 2007
Israel’s Prime Minister on Sunday said he has no objections to a proposed massive U.S. arms sale to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf States. VOA’s Jim Teeple reports from Jerusalem.
Israel has long expressed wariness over U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia and other Arab states, but Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says the proposal by the U.S. to sell $20 billion worth of advanced weaponry to Saudi Arabia and other Arab Gulf states is understandable.
Mr. Olmert says his government understands the need to strengthen moderate Arab countries that face Iran and there is a need for a united front between the U.S. and Israel regarding Iran.
The proposed arms deal includes advanced satellite guided bombs and upgrades that will greatly enhance the long-range striking ability of Saudi fighter aircraft. It also includes a large number of naval vessels.
Under the proposed deal Israel will also benefit. The deal calls for Israel to receive a 25-percent increase in U.S. military assistance. Israel currently receives $2.4 billion a year in military aid. That will jump to $3 billion a year over ten years, for a total of $30 billion, ten billion dollars more than the proposed sale to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states.
The deal is expected to be formally announced by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who heads to the Middle East this week on a rare joint mission with U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.
Meanwhile Israel on Sunday allowed about 100 Palestinians stranded in Egypt to travel to the Gaza Strip by passing through an Israeli-Egyptian border crossing. The main Rafah crossing point between the Gaza Strip and Egypt has been closed since the Hamas takeover of Gaza last month, stranding about six thousand Palestinians on the Egyptian side of the border. Riad Maliki a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he believes all the stranded Palestinians will make it back to Gaza in the next few days.
Maliki says the Israeli-Egyptian crossing has been used in the past to allow Gaza residents to travel to Saudi Arabia for the annual pilgrimage, the Hajj.
Hamas has criticized the move to allow Palestinians to use the Israeli crossing, saying the Rafah crossing should be reopened instead. Israel has closed the entry points to Gaza for all but humanitarian aid and emergency medical issues, saying Hamas has used the Rafah crossing to smuggle weapons from Egypt into Gaza and has attacked other crossings that border on Israel.

A disagreement over foreign policy in the U.S. presidential election campaign has escalated into the sharpest exchange yet between Democratic contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. VOA National correspondent Jim Malone has more from Washington.
The testy exchange began in the recent Democratic candidates debate in South Carolina when Senator Obama was asked if he would meet separately with the leaders of Iran, North Korea, Venezuela and other U.S. adversaries if he were elected president.
Obama said that he would.
“The notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them, which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration, is ridiculous,” he said.
In her response, Senator Clinton said that although she supported a renewed emphasis on diplomacy to deal with governments hostile to the U.S., she would not guarantee meetings with those foreign leaders in the first year of her presidency.
“Because I do not think you promise a meeting at that high a level before you know what the intentions are,” she said. “I do not want to be used for propaganda purposes. I do not want to make a situation even worse.”
Later, Clinton suggested Obama was naïve and showed his inexperience by saying he would agree to meet with foreign leaders hostile to the U.S.
Obama fired back, saying Clinton was the one who was irresponsible and naïve by initially supporting President Bush’s decision to use military force in Iraq.
“I do not want a continuation of Bush-Cheney! I do not want Bush-Cheney lite,” he said. “I want a fundamental change.”
Clinton told the Cable News Network that the dispute with Obama was becoming, in her words,” kind of silly.”
“I have been called a lot of things in my life, but I have never been called George Bush or Dick Cheney, certainly,” she said. “You know you have to ask, whatever happened to the politics of hope?”
Political experts say the incident is an example of both candidates trying to play to their strengths, Clinton’s experience versus Obama casting himself as an agent of political change.

“You have here the classic defining dynamic between these two candidates. You have experience on one side and change on the other. The question is, how much change do Democrats want?” said Richard Wolffe, White House correspondent for Newsweek magazine and a guest on this week’s Issues in the News program on VOA.
Among Democratic voters, Clinton leads Obama in the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll by a margin of 45 - 30 percent, with six other contenders trailing behind.
