A Deceptive Rebuttal from Hillary Rodham Clinton
Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, youtube, Democrats, Clinton, disclosure, ethics, Video, hillary on August 31st, 2007 by Stanford Matthews
Hillary Rodham Clinton is at it again. Never mind that Michael Dukakis and her have both commented that the GOP would gain a political benefit if the US suffered another terrorist attack. This post has to do with Hillary Rodham Clinton’s press release of August 19, 2007. It is titled, Rove: Wrong Again. Hillary on Health Care. While she admits the failed health care initiative of Bill Clinton’s Administration, that is where the truth stops for all practical purposes.
HRC goes on to say she has the highest score of any candidate on any issue within their own party. While technically correct if all the conditions placed on it here were expressed accurately, her statement is misleading for several reasons. Democrats, according to the same polling report from Gallup, usually score better on domestic issues. That is because everyone is familiar with the Democratic party’s reliance on ‘programs’ as their solutions to problems. The programs always come with spending taxpayer’s money. In this case, 91% of Democrats must favor government run health care.
If you look at the remainder of the health care data in the poll, Clinton scores 65 while Obama scores 61. In the same portion where Clinton draws the 91% among Dems, Obama does 81% and Edwards at 75. So it is not as big a deal as she would have you believe.
Other areas of the poll also give a better picture of results. On a big issue like the war in Iraq, even Gallup’s summary with an excerpt in the subtitle indicates no candidate has an edge on the issue. All but two of the seven are in the 50% range with two in the 30’s. Clinton is in the middle in fourth place.
On fighting terrorism, Giuliani and McCain lead the pack with scores in the 60’s with Clinton trailing in the 50’s. Sort of takes some of the punch out of that 91% among Dems score for health care.
On the economy, good news for Clinton fans. She is essentially in a three way tie with Obama and Giuliani. Giuliani leads the national election polls while Clinton and Obama lead for the Dems. Funny how the poll for confidence on issues mirrors that trend. Are the voters in these polls choosing their candidate first and then simply transferring that to an issue survey? That would not be a shocker.
If you read the Gallup poll for yourself two things may happen. You will find some interesting comparisons beyond what the report describes. And second, your reaction will not be as positive as Hillary Rodham Clinton hopes.
Read the rest of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s press release carefully. You will notice a trend to use phrases and words that are intended to inflate Hillary Rodham Clinton’s involvement on issues. Examples would be, ‘helped create’, ‘helped ensure’, ‘Hillary is fighting’ and others. If you are helping or fighting it really says nothing about what you did specifically. What exactly is a ‘point person working to ensure’? What’s the difference between ’sponsoring’ legislation and ‘backing it’?
The same goes for her statements on S.650. She is not the sponsor of the legislation according to Thomas at the Library of Congress. She was a co-sponsor along with four or five others. By saying she introduced it may not be accurate. Hillary Rodham Clinton has received criticism before for not getting involved in any issue that could derail her plans. This could be one of those times and now she wants credit. If you introduced the legislation, how come you are not the sponsor of record?
Without checking, you might be able to give one to Hillary on prescription drug legislation. Rove says she voted against and Hillary says it was a rotten bill. Some do say it was a cash cow for the drug companies. The only good it may provide is another option. You don’t have to participate. There are people who don’t because their current arrangement is better. So if it is just another option for people without good coverage, then it was a good thing. You decide. This one is unclear.
The remainder of the Rove/Clinton argument is like the last one. In essence there were problems with the specific issues before government action and there still are problems. It really solved nothing. So the effects of doing nothing or doing what was proposed gives about a horse a piece. This part was a waste of time by both sides.
The bottom line here is Hillary Rodham Clinton is wrong on most of the above, may have scored one on prescription drugs and its a horse a piece on the rest. That would be aided by Hillary Rodham Clinton not locking up her First Lady docs until after the election. Any way you slice that it points to deception. If she wants to stand on her record then stand on it, don’t hide it or try to make it into something it is not.

Hillary Rodham Clinton: Anyone You Want Her to Be
Posted in Public Affairs, war, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Democrats, Clinton on August 30th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews
Just like the warn out pick up line Hillary Rodham Clinton will be anybody you want her to be as long as she gets what she wants. In a column from the Philadelphia Inquirer about one of HRC’s recent speeches, more evidence of that truth is exposed. Earlier examples include the Southern drawl in the South, along with some bizarre imagined kinship with those who experienced the civil rights movement. Now she’s hedging her bets on Iraq and talking about God. As the columnist notes, something Dems would not tolerate from those they view as theocrats.
I hope the columnist is right about HRC angering the fringe antiwar left, but it is not a convincing act for those who want victory in Iraq. He also describes her as ‘conservative’ in Democrat terms but that seems as oxymoron. And if Bill Clinton was a ‘centrist’ or ‘conservative’ Democrat, where is the evidence that Bill and HRC are anything more than skilled at pandering. His success along those lines, pandering that is, are legendary. HRC would have to win the 2008 election to begin to match Bill’s lack of conscience. If that stirs anger in you, I have three words….. oval, office, intern.
The author of the referenced column makes some good points about the war. It is necessary to add that HRC has recently referred to herself as a ‘modern progressive’. How that is different from an ordinary progressive is unclear. Some have labeled her a marxist. That is no more of a stretch than the modern progressive label. But the truth is as stated at the top of this post is HRC will be anyone you want her to be as long as she gets what she wants.
You may call it unfair but the history is long and littered with shady circumstances to say the least. The strange events with the Rose Law firm, allowing Bill’s indiscretions from the days as Governor and beyond and probably before. Vince Foster, the savings and loan involvement and Whirewater. A sex scandal in the White House, numerous accounts of other similar episodes, a near impeachment, lying to Congress, an affinity for lobbyists, renting out the Lincoln bedroom or whatever and the list goes on. That was just from memory. Sealing her White House docs until after the election, hiring questionable campaign staff, waiving off public money knowing the dirty bucks would certainly be larger and again, on and on it goes.
You can find fault with all candidates. But there is no other candidate with such a long and continuous set of question marks as Hillary Rodham Clinton. If you are bothered by the current President, perform due diligence on HRC or whatever you don’t like about President Bush will pale in comparison with another dose of Clintonitis.

Hillary Rodham Clinton Review: Willie Tan
Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, Bush, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, GOP, Democrats, conservative, liberal, News Media, Clinton, lobbyist, Law, Entertainment on August 30th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews
Given the fact that Hillary Rodham Clinton is still the Democrats front runner for 2008 after admitting to the public she takes money from lobbyists (who pay to influence decisions if you have forgotten) and has no intention of stopping, those who continue to support her are either crooked or have a learning disability. Giving the benefit of the doubt, it will be assumed the learning disability accounts for a substantial share of those in HRC’s support base. So repetition will be required to get through to them.
Before any readers get all upset and rashly submit comments about this post being Hillary hate speech, hold your water and pay attention for a moment longer. By now you have probably looked ahead and see the reference below is supplied by Byron York of the National Review Online. Before you put fingers to keyboard to offer an insult or accuse this of being a right wing conspiracy, keep in mind his sources include ABC and the Washington Post. Let’s see. Did the Washington Post have anything to do with investigating Watergate? Hmm, wasn’t that President a member of the GOP? So they’re not entirely averse to action against the right side of politics.
While the piece is dated from 2006, the rest of the piece covers misdeeds from the left and the right. If you are on the left, the time of publication was during Tom Delay’s fall from grace and the Abramoff scandal. That is the right side. But then neither Delay or Abramoff are running for President. Hillary Rodham Clinton is. The excerpt below is linked for further reading but what is here goes back to early First Lady years and forward.
It is understandable that Hillary Rodham Clinton’s followers would object to this post. No one enjoys dealing with unpleasant information about their chosen candidate. Just like going to the dentist and being exposed to some discomfort, this is for your own good and, minus the dentist, the good of the country. Stop again for a moment and understand that Hillary Rodham Clinton’s history is filled with stories like these and sainthood is not in her future. And one more time for repetition therapy, all politicians are capable of these types of behavior but we have enough of them in Congress and do not need one in the White House. Whatever your opinion might be about President Bush, that ship already sailed and you can’t do anything about it. There are six other candidates to choose from so you have plenty of other choices.
And if you have your heart set on voting for a woman as President, the first woman Speaker of the House should be a clue. Make better choices. That one is not working out so well for ya ( or anyone else ). It’s a long campaign season and we will have many more opportunities like this to help you make an intelligent decision in 2008. God knows, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s history has nearly unlimited stories to share.

The contributions are not Sen. Clinton’s first contact with Tan, or with the Northern Marianas. In 1997, the Washington Post reported that Mrs. Clinton, then First Lady, made a brief visit to the island of Guam in September 1995. During her few hours there, she attended what the Post called “the biggest political fund-raising effort ever on this trade-wind caressed chunk of American territory 6,100 miles west of California.” Among those in attendance, the paper reported, was Willie Tan. The Post said that U.S. officials were “concerned” about some of the donors who met with Mrs. Clinton, including Tan, whose “Saipan-based garment companies donated at least $17,500 to the DNC.”
Three weeks after Mrs. Clinton’s visit, the paper continued, “a Guam Democratic Party official arrived in Washington with more than $250,000 in campaign contributions. Within six months of that, [a group of] Guam businessmen had ponied up more than $132,000 for the Clinton-Gore reelection campaign and $510,000 in ’soft money’ contributions to the Democratic National Committee, making the island, with its 140,000 residents, the biggest donor to the Democratic Party per capita of any territory in the United States.” Later, the Post continued, “the contributions from Guam were followed…by signs of a significant and controversial change in the Clinton administration’s policy toward the island.”
US Partisan Politics and Foreign Affairs

While Hillary Rodham Clinton and other Dems or Democratic party faithful admit the surge is working but claim the good news comes too late, those supporting US troops never view advances toward victory as ‘too late.’ Nor do they place political motives above matters of national defense, security or support of the US military.
There is no need to revisit the civilian and political interference that has presented the greatest obstacle to victory in Iraq as it has been thoroughly addressed by everyone to date. However, positive news has been sorely neglected and a few notes are worth repeating.
Just this week Iraqi government leaders reached an agreement to resolve sectarian differences. While agreement by the entire Iraqi parliament is required and not guaranteed, this event is a breakthrough in what has been the Iraqi obstacle in this war.
Not long ago tribal leaders in previous hot spots in the country have joined with US military forces to oust Al-Qaeda from Iraq. The senseless murder of civilians by the terrorist group has finally been recognized as unacceptable by influential regional leaders in various provinces.
Countering the influence of Iran in the Iraq war are efforts like General Odierno who says the US is attacking supply lines of those offering money, material and trainers for Iraqi sectarian extremists. In addition the case is being made to Iraqis that Iranian involvement is not in the long term interests of Iraq. However, the General adds the Iranian factor is still significant.
In a report from VOA, President Bush again expressed displeasure with Iran’s actions in the Iraq war in a speech to members of the American Legion.
Stearns report (mp3) - download 630K audio clip
Listen to Stearns report (mp3) audio clipPresident Bush says Iran must stop arming militants who are attacking U.S. troops in Iraq.
Other events concerning Iran include their own saber-rattling and defiance to international opposition on their various nuclear programs as described below.
Pace report (mp3) - Download 567k audio clip
Listen to Pace report (mp3) audio clipIranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says that, contrary to recent news reports, Tehran has not slowed its nuclear activity. In a lengthy news conference in the Iranian capital, the president also warned Iran would respond if the United States goes ahead with plans to label the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organization.
Urging by political opponents of President Bush for the US to enter talks with regimes in Iran, North Korea and elsewhere may not be having the effect suggested by those same opponents. But overall, Us efforts in Iraq are showing much improved results since the beginning of the surge. Including this week’s surprise event which should probably not be taken at face value.
Iraqi cleric Sadr suspends militia activities
By Damien McElroy, Foreign Affairs Correspondent

The Democratic party leadership, like Majority Whip James Clyburn, recently expressed concern that a positive report from General Patraeus in September may split the party. Shortly after that reports surfaced that no matter what the General reported, the left would view it as a lie. Further evidence that the political left is obstructing the war effort as alleged earlier.
In other words, ever since those in Congress who oppose victory in Iraq were defeated on continued funding for the war, limited obstruction from civilian authorities have allowed military efforts to turn the corner that has fostered positive outcomes in Iraq.
Other foreign affairs issues that have been the focus of most criticism of the Bush Administration’s performance include relations with Russia, Israel, Palestine and North Korea to mention a few. Events like Pelosi traveling to Syria or Dems urging talks with Iran or North Korea have been used to attack the Administration’s positions. So how are things working out so far.
Again from VOA news a report outlining Congressional efforts to advance nuclear arms control with an old nemesis from the Cold War.
Fedynsky report (mp3) - Download 639k audio clip
Listen to Fedynsky report (mp3) audio clipSenator Richard Lugar and former Senator Sam Nunn, authors of U.S. legislation to reduce the post-Soviet nuclear arsenal, are in Russia in an effort to further tighten global controls on weapons of mass destruction.
If you are old enough to have been on the planet when US President Jimmy Carter, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin worked on the Camp David Accords, you may have experienced an optimistic expectation tempered with an objective pessimism over the chances for Mid-East peace.
The first discussion over critical issues between Israeli and Palestinian leaders in seven years may have given rise to similar optimism but by now few would have truly expected progress. The excerpts below document the endless travel over all too familiar posturing.
He says the only way to liberate Palestine is through jihad or holy war.
Another topic related to the illusive pursuit of world peace on the world leaders ‘to do’ list is nuclear power wannabe North Korea.
The report above suggests there is no reason to be especially optimistic about talks between the US and North Korea. While it is better than a daily reminder of increasing tension or some concern of an imminent showdown, current talks may be nothing more than a delay of the inevitable. From what has been characterized as the most unpredictable regime on the planet, a most predictable course of bad faith negotiating emerges. And many criticized the US for not talking to North Korea earlier.
Any accommodations made by President Bush to resolve issues with the Democratic party and a few GOP members in Congress may less effective than if he had maintained his rigid position with regard to certain countries. Softening the approach may be what led Iran to make the ridiculous offer to fill the power vacuum in Iraqi politics. In addition, talks with North Korea are showing symptoms of DPRK intentions to circumvent an effective agreement.
The upside is conditions in Iraq have improved enough to potentially torpedo the left antiwar strategy. Talks with Iran and North Korea have not yet disintegrated. Maybe the US and Russia will move away from a return to Cold War positions and at least Israel and Palestine have talked about things that were ignored for the last seven years. Other than Iraq, no improvements really, just more of a time out.
There is no proof that politics are necessary for international diplomacy. Although diplomats and politicians will argue that point ad infinitum. It may be the wrong approach to expect people to resolve differences equipped only with the idea we should all be adequately intelligent to do so. If we learn how to remove politics from negotiation the solution may find us.

Hillary Rodham Clinton: Public Opinions
Posted in wordpress, campaign, election, News Media, Clinton, Public, Opinion on August 29th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews
(feel free to caption this pic in the comments)
A little entertainment is offered from the Seattle Times. Below are some quotes and commentary from the public on Hillary Rodham Clinton. Some additional commentary on the public opinions is offered as well. Feel free to submit your own. There are only a handful of quotes from the public. And this is certainly not a scientific effort. But does it make you feel a little concerned about polls, elections and matters in general? Not one person suggested to the reporter/interviewer that other considerations were more important than gender. That is with the possible exception of one voter saying one Clinton was enough.
Can’t get to serious about this post since it was simply offered for amusement. This is the first such posting here of public commentary on a candidate. If more articles like this are found they will be posted. Hopefully any future reporter interviews like this will be on more than one narrow question.
Okay, Debbie. Why can’t she be as strong in a Presidential position? Bill can show her all the positions. And Debbie, does it seem like ‘it’s always been for men’ because there never was a woman President? Okay, you got me, men are the strongest. Do you suppose Debbie is a registered voter?
Yo, Barbara, better than what? The editor could have left out the [next year] part. Just kidding (maybe).
Rebecca? When was she President?
“One Clinton was enough,” said Shane Cooprider, 30, who was visiting from Iowa.
His wife, Kim, said she’s pondering her options, but would not vote for Clinton based on gender.
“I would vote for a female president, but I don’t know if I would necessarily vote for Hillary,” Cooprider said. “A few years ago, back in college, I might have done it just because she’s a woman, but I think I have advanced from that.”
Odds are neither of them will vote but if they do they’ll both vote for Huckabee.
Lynnwood resident Gloria Chard, 75, is deciding between Barack Obama and Clinton, while her friend Clare Jones, 86, decided she will vote for Hillary, in part because it would bring Bill Clinton back to the White House.
To which Chard replied: “That makes it better.”
One of the advantages of a very long campaign season.

Oprah’s Obama Drama Continues…
Posted in wordpress, Politics, youtube, Democrats, liberal, ethics, America, United States, Hol_ywood, Video, Public, obama, Entertainment on August 29th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews
It was either a mistake to use ‘Obama’ for a search term in the news this evening or just lazy luck since the surname is all one needs. You won’t see political headlines if all you enter is ‘Edwards’. After entering the term ‘Obama’ and pressing enter, skimming the headlines was painful. ‘ Fidel Castro tips Clinton-Obama as winning team ‘, was interpreted as a spoof but there was no worthwhile reason to read it. Oh Jesus!! That was the thought that came to mind when reading ‘ Obama: ‘We need to rebuild this city.’ ‘ The insanity over NOLA is simply never going to go away. But why be concerned with 300 years of insanity when you can get nearly everyone else in the country to ante up for at least one more rebuild with no solution.
Another headline too stupid to follow up on was ‘ Obama unveils radical mortgage plan. ‘ With the rank amateur stupidity of rookie investors who fail to buy low and sell high, too many people did what too many people do when greed is involved. Wait until just before the bubble bursts or bet the farm on inflated profit projections or other get rich quick notions only to wake up in a mountain of debt. Then vote seeking politicians devise equally misguided plans to right the ship of fools. And where does the magical funding come from for these grand strategies? Just raise taxes or pass it on to the next generation.
If an outburst from Ted Nugent is directed toward Obama and Clinton, complete with video viewed at least 560,000 times, there is no value in even posting the headline much less talking anymore about it. Almost makes you wish Congress was back in session for some classic wastes of time.
The only surprise about Alabama Senator Shelby putting Obama’s divestment bill on hold is who would expect any noise out of Congress or about Congressional business before September 4? But it appears that Shelby only made the point of the bill going through committee before bringing to a vote. The headline is from a quote to an Israeli paper from Obama. They claim it happened under orders from Bush due to EU angst over the idea . Who cares?
But the crazy headline from today related to the title of this post is, ‘ Oprah Goes Up Against Bride In Obama Party Plans. ‘ How could anyone refuse to check this out? Even if you absolutely abhor tabloid/gossip/Hollywood nonsense, this has to be worth the risk.
Along with the story being just plain nuts, it is representative of the fact there is no limit on how far out of bounds politics in this country will go. A billionaire, a millionaire and some poor schmuck trying to get married may have locked horns or wedding girl quietly acquiesced to the power on her left. Before the excerpts comes one aside. This version of the story has a better headline and is from PMSNBC. Can you believe the top of the page reads ‘ Breaking News’ and ‘Tabloid Tidbits’? Gotta be crazy or fatigued to read this stuff. But here is some of it.
Oprah to bride: Clear out of my hotel!
MSNBC News Services
Updated: 9:08 a.m. ET Aug. 28, 2007
One version has the bride as an attorney and refusing to cave while the other has Oprah’s spokesperson denying any coercion yet rooms mysteriously opened up. One person is a billionaire supporting a millionaire to run for President but it makes you wonder how they intend to run the country if the campaign were successful. Oh, there is no suggestion here that Oprah will be the new Karl.
That’s it. No more reading of the PMSNBC gossip columns. Initially it was funny. Now it’s just plain weird.

President Bush says Iran must stop arming militants who are attacking U.S. troops in Iraq. VOA White House Correspondent Scott Stearns reports, Mr. Bush’s speech to a veterans group is part of a White House effort to restore public support for the war in Iraq.
President Bush told a meeting of the American Legion, America’s largest veterans’ group, that winning the war in Iraq is vital to America’s long-term security and the future of the Middle East.
He says extremists in the region are inspired by two strains of violent Islamic radicalism that are closing in on Iraq in an effort to bring down its young democracy.
The president says Sunni extremism, embodied by al-Qaida and its allies, is responsible for the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington as well as violence against fellow Muslims in Algeria, Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Bush says Shia extremism is embodied by Iran, which he says threatens the security of nations everywhere by actively pursuing technology that could be used to develop nuclear weapons.
He told the military veterans that Iran is funding Hezbollah militants and is arming Iraqi extremists to attack U.S. troops.
“Some say Iran’s leaders are not aware of what members of their own regime are doing,” Mr. Bush said. “Others say Iran’s leaders are actively seeking to provoke the West. Either way, they cannot escape responsibility for aiding attacks against coalition forces and the murder of innocent Iraqis. The Iranian regime must halt these actions, and until it does, I will take actions necessary to protect our troops.”
Mr. Bush says he has authorized U.S. military commanders in Iraq to confront what he calls “Tehran’s murderous activities.”
A majority of Americans now believe the war in Iraq is a mistake. A public-opinion poll by CBS News this month says more than two-thirds of Americans disapprove of the president’s handling of the war in Iraq.
White House officials say the speech, along with last week’s appearance before the Veterans of Foreign Wars, is meant to set the broader context for the Iraq conflict before next month’s presidential report to Congress on the impact of the January decision to send more troops to Iraq.
While the president says he will make no decisions on troop levels until after the September 15th report to Congress, he made clear to the American Legion that withdrawing before the war is won would be a mistake.
“We have seen what these enemies will do when American forces are actively engaged in Iraq,” Mr. Bush said. “And we can envision what they would do if they were emboldened by American forces in retreat.”
The president says the challenge in Iraq is that either the forces of extremism advance their interests or the forces of freedom succeed and advance America’s interests. He says the most important way to counter the ambitions of al-Qaida and Iran is to win the fight in Iraq.
Ahmadinejad: Iranian Nuclear Program Not Slowed

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says that, contrary to recent news reports, Tehran has not slowed its nuclear activity. In a lengthy news conference in the Iranian capital, the president also warned Iran would respond if the United States goes ahead with plans to label the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organization. VOA’s Sonja Pace has more on the story from our Middle East bureau in Cairo.
Speaking to reporters in Tehran, President Ahmadinejad said the case is closed.
He said Iran has the right to develop nuclear energy and will continue to do so, despite the efforts of some western countries to prevent it.
President Ahmadinejad said that Iran is a nuclear country, and that means it possesses the whole nuclear-fuel cycle.
He also described as false, reports in the news that Iran has slowed its uranium-enrichment activities.
The Iranian leader repeated his government’s insistence that it is pursuing nuclear technology for peaceful purposes only, not for nuclear weapons as the United States and many other nations contend.
President Ahmadinejad also had another word of caution for the United States.
He said it would be illogical for the United States to go ahead with plans to label the Iranian Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organization. He said the United States knows that Iran would respond, but he did not provide details on what that response might be.
Washington has long accused the Revolutionary Guards of supporting terrorism and training terrorists, including in Iraq and Lebanon.
On the issue of Iraq, President Ahmadinejad said Iran supports the Iraqi government. He said the situation there, however, is becoming increasingly precarious. He warned of a growing and imminent power vacuum in Iraq, which he said Iran was ready to help fill.
Washington has long called for Iran to play a more positive role to help stabilize Iraq, but fears that Tehran will be all too eager to step into any gap to increase its own influence in Iraq and the region.
President Bush Urges Continued Support for Iraq War

President Bush has sought to bolster support for the war in Iraq by reminding U.S. citizens of the threat of terrorism and the need for peace in the Middle East.
Mr. Bush spoke Tuesday in Reno, Nevada, less than three weeks before a September 15 deadline for a crucial report to Congress on Iraq’s military and political development.
The U.S. leader said that if violent extremists were allowed to flourish in the Middle East, unrest in the region could spread to other parts of the world. He said the U.S. war strategy in Iraq is working, despite frustrations over the pace at which the Iraqi government passes laws.
Mr. Bush said political change is coming about on the local level around Iraq, while U.S. troops have helped decrease the level of sectarian violence in the capital, Baghdad. He also said the policy is working at the international level, as the international community increasingly begins to understands the importance of a free Iraq.
Mr. Bush is under pressure from Democrats as well as members of his own party to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq.
Last week, an influential member of the Senate Armed Services committee, Republican John Warner, called on Mr. Bush to begin withdrawing troops before the end of this year.

Senator Richard Lugar and former Senator Sam Nunn, authors of U.S. legislation to reduce the post-Soviet nuclear arsenal, are in Russia in an effort to further tighten global controls on weapons of mass destruction. VOA Moscow correspondent Peter Fedynsky reports.
Speaking Monday at a large public event in the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Moscow, Senator Richard Lugar and Sam Nunn underscored the common interest and unique responsibilities the United States and Russia share as nuclear powers.
Nunn said bilateral interests in a healthy economy, citizenry, and environment, as well as a common vulnerability to catastrophic terrorism, should prompt the two countries to lead by example in reducing the threat of weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and biological weapons.
“This alignment of our interests must lead to an alignment of our actions, or our vital interests will be lost in our non-vital disagreements,” said Nunn. “Without joint actions, our citizens will gradually lose their perspective of the alignment of our interests, and the lack of public support for cooperative efforts will undermine even visionary political leadership.”
Nunn called for both countries to reduce their nuclear arsenals and to remove weapons from hair trigger alert. He also urged improved procedures to verify compliance with weapons agreements and also to prevent more nations from acquiring nuclear weapons and enrichment capabilities.
Senator Lugar said the U.S.-Russian experience in arms control will be critical to a successful diplomatic effort to prevent North Korea from becoming a nuclear power.
“Russia and the United States also must come together to address the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear weapons program,” said Lugar. “For too long our governments have sometimes been at odds over how to respond to Tehran’s behavior. The differences in our approaches have narrowed recently and there are prospects for continued cooperation between Moscow and Washington within the U.N. Security Council.”
Senator Lugar said another key to bilateral cooperation is Russian membership in the World Trade Organization. He said the cold war-era Jackson-Vanik Amendment, which the United States used to link trade relations with human rights in the Soviet Union, no longer applies to Russia and should be revoked.
Senator Lugar also noted a significant expansion of U.S.-Russian business ties, including a 20 percent increase in American exports to Russia last year to $4.7 billion. He said the improved business climate includes deepening cooperation on piracy, counterfeiting, border controls, pharmaceutical test data and intellectual property rights.
Former Senator Nunn concluded his speech with a warning that the world today is in a race between cooperation and catastrophe. He used an old saying to frame his call for cooperation, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”
