A British court has ordered the government to remove the Iranian opposition group, the People’s Mujahedeen, from its list of terrorist organizations. The group is hailing the decision as a major victory while the British government says it will appeal the ruling. VOA’s Sonja Pace has the story from London.

The People’s Mujahedeen of Iran has been described by some as a cult and by others as the only viable opposition to the clerical regime in Tehran. It has also been fighting a long-running battle to get off the list of terrorist organizations in Europe as well as in the United States.

On Friday, it won a major victory when a British tribunal ruled that there is no evidence the People’s Mujahedeen has carried out any terrorist activity in years or encouraged others to do so. The court ruled the group should be dropped from Britain’s list of terrorist organizations.

The People’s Mujahedeen is part of the broader umbrella grouping - the National Council of Resistance in Iran. The group’s president-elect Maryam Rajavi called Friday’s verdict a “magnificent victory for justice.”

Speaking to VOA from the group’s headquarters in Paris, spokesman Shahin Gobadi says the ruling sends an important political message to the government in Tehran.

“The message is that firmness should be the policy vis-a-vis the Iranian regime, and also it means that the policy of appeasement which this [terrorism] listing is part and parcel of, should be put aside once and for all,” Gobadi said.

Gobadi says Friday’s ruling vindicates the group’s assertion that the terrorist label was wrong from the start and was part of the West’s attempt to get on a better footing with Tehran.

The British government said it was disappointed by Friday’s ruling and will appeal. Until then, the People’s Mujahedeen will reportedly remain on the terrorist list.

The opposition group was first set up in the 1960s with the aim of overthrowing the U.S.-backed regime of the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. It took part in the Islamic revolution, but soon fell out with the new clerical government and set out on a campaign of assassinations and bombings to topple it. The group moved to Iraq in the 1980s and operated from there with the blessing of Saddam Hussein. After Saddam was ousted, the U.S. military disarmed the group.

The group’s resolve toward regime change in Iran has found support among lawmakers in Europe and the United States. Dozens of British members of parliament supported the case to drop the People’s Mujahedeen from Britain’s terrorism list.

Clinton Gets Religion for Quid Pro Quo

Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Democrats, Religion, liberal, Clinton, disclosure, ethics, hillary, ACLU, Abortion on November 30th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

HRC
If you don’t see a problem with Hillary Rodham Clinton courting votes from a religious conference on AIDS then you are not looking hard enough. And it could be said you are intentionally ignoring headlines like the one below suggesting Clinton, AIDS and evangelicals make an unusual trio. And a ‘pastor’ named Rich Warren associated with what is described as a Mega Church and a bestselling non-fiction book to the tune of $23 million dollars should appear on your radar.

Some say there are those in the religious right migrating to the left based on issues other than abortion. With the left being firmly entrenched in surrender, gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans gender agendas and partial birth abortions as well as the ACLU and removing religion from American life, you have to ask yourself what’s wrong with this picture?

Clinton, Democrats find religion, court evangelical voters
Clinton vows to fight AIDS
Hillary presses for more fund to combat AIDS
Clinton woos evangelicals at AIDS conference
Clinton Urges Sweeping Action on AIDS
Clinton, AIDS and evangelicals make unusual trio
Third Annual Saddleback Global Summit on AIDS & The Church Focuses
Clinton Announces AIDS Plan

And the obvious political quid pro quo of gimme your votes and I’ll secure public funds for your private agenda should send up flags for voters. Of the candidates in the 2008 Presidential campaign, Giuliani and Clinton are at the bottom of the list of those viewed as religious. While not a surprise it appears Hillary Rodham Clinton is getting religion to pander for votes.

Funny how the ACLU and other liberal organizations like the Democratic party pounce at every opportunity to use the separation of church and state to remove religion from American life but now in the middle of Presidential campaign another scam HRC wants you to believe is that she’s got religion. The only reason she is getting religion is for votes.

If the evangelicals described in this story are willing to abandon what are perceived as core religious values to secure funding for an AIDS campaign this would not be a match made in heaven. For years evangelical values have been compared with conservative values and most often characterized as compatible. The partnership being considered at the Mega Church is beginning to resemble US foreign policy over time where alliances between friend and foe become blurred.

But Clinton told the audience of about 1,700 people that action goes hand in hand with faith. She won applause when she proposed $50 billion for AIDS treatment and prevention and promised to “set a goal of ending all deaths from malaria in Africa” - where 1 million die annually from the disease - by the end of a second term.

The Democratic candidate did not shy away from more controversial ground, telling congregants “it is long past time that we do everything we can to stand up for the proposition that women’s rights are human rights.”

“Girls denied their human rights are girls at risk for AIDS. … Even in our own country today, women are now the face of AIDS,” she said, arguing that world and church leaders must address the sexual trafficking of girls worldwide.

Apparently Hillary Rodham Clinton is borrowing from her old speeches as First Lady that are still available. She made speeches at UN events on women’s rights while she was in the White House with Bill. Most other docs she is keeping from the public until after the election. The quote above seems to be a near verbatim repeat of those earlier speeches. But AIDS is not solely a women’s issue. In case she has forgotten, there are two sexes in the human species. But the applause she received would indicate these evangelicals are on board for $50 billion for their votes. And Clinton is happy to postpone her other promise to a requested second term at which time it will no longer matter if she does not deliver aside from your $50 billion.

If you cannot see the obscene scam being perpetrated by Hillary Rodham Clinton you have chosen to close your eyes and ignore it.

Cowboys, Packers Face Off in Dallas

Green Bay PackersDallas Cowboys
By VOA Sports
Washington, DC
29 November 2007

Two of the best teams in the (U.S.) National Fooball League - the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers - are set to meet in a rare and much anticipated Thursday night encounter in Dallas (0115 UTC).

Both teams have won 10 of their 11 games this season to share the lead in the National Conference. It’s the first time in 17 years that two NFL teams with records of 10-1 or better will play one another.

The team that wins will gain the edge for home field advantage in the playoffs. No other team in their conference is within three games of them. The undefeated New England Patriots (11-0) are in the American Conference.

Dallas has won five games in a row since its only loss, which was to New England. Green Bay has won six straight, with the Packers’ only loss coming to their rival Chicago Bears.

Head-to-head, Dallas and Green Bay are even all-time, with each club winning 10 times.

Proof Mitt Romney is Pro-Life

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, GOP, conservative, Advertising, romney, Opinion, giuliani, Abortion on November 29th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Mitt Romney
The ad campaign criticizing Mitt Romney on abortion by what is described as a GOP group favoring abortion rights proves two things.  The group may favor abortion but to claim they are Republican runs counter to the pro-life position of conservatives.  The second thing it proves is pro-choice advocates are convinced that Romney is firmly opposed to abortion or they would not waste the money on the ad.

So for those of you who may be undecided on Mitt Romney for President due to the abortion issue, this should clear things up for you.  Although Mitt Romney may not enjoy 100% support from all who claim to be pro-life, for months now many pro-life and religious groups have accepted the fact that Mitt Romney is opposed to abortion.  The ad referred to above is simply more evidence that those who support abortion oppose Mitt Romney.  And the rumor that the group has an association with liberal Republican candidate Rudy Giuliani does not hurt Romney’s case either.

A Republican group that favors abortion rights plans to hit Mitt Romney in Iowa and New Hampshire with a TV spot and newspaper ads over his change of position on abortion.

Romney’s campaign stressed that several of the group’s board members have donated to Republican rival Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign, though the group said it has not talked to the Giuliani campaign about the ad campaign.

“Governor Romney will not back down from his pro-life position, despite this group’s attempts to weaken the party platform and promote Mayor Giuliani’s pro-choice candidacy,” Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said.

For those readers not aware and to borrow the phrase ‘in the interest of full disclosure’ this blog fully supports Mitt Romney for President.  But facts are facts and if a pro-choice attacks a candidate with a pro-life position it serves as evidence the candidate’s pro-life position is valid.  The strange thing is having a group claim to be Republican or conservative and holding a pro-choice stand.  It is hard to believe they are associated with the GOP but easy to believe they are pro-choice and again only serves as evidence that Mitt Romney opposes abortion.

If you haven’t already, throw your support behind Mitt Romney.  You won’t be disappointed.

GOP Concedes Romney as Front Runner

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, youtube, McCain, GOP, Tancredo, conservative, News Media, thompson, romney, Opinion, giuliani, huckabee on November 29th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Mitt Romney
If being the front runner of a campaign includes being the primary target of every other candidate then while the national polls do not suggest Romney as a front runner his opponents in the campaign do. In early states, the LA Times only mentions Iowa and New Hampshire. Depending on the poll you read, Romney is essentially sharing the top with Fred Thompson in South Carolina. A state the pundits said earlier was one where he would not do well. In Florida, Romney is in 2nd or 3rd depending on the poll you read. And other states like Nevada and California also depict a strong showing for Mitt Romney.

As the debate continued over two hours, the most frequent target was former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has been a leader in the two states that loom largest in the early voting — Iowa and New Hampshire.

Romney was attacked from all sides, on multiple issues. Former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani accused him of employing illegal immigrants, while former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee suggested that he was heartless for opposing college scholarships for immigrants. Sen. John McCain of Arizona faulted Romney for refusing to concede that an interrogation practice called waterboarding amounts to torture. And former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee — via a campaign video — chided the former governor for changing his position on abortion.

The most liberal GOP candidate, Giuliani, unable to defend his ’sanctuary city’ position selects illegal immigration as a topic to challenge Romney. Besides Tom Tancredo, Romney may be the only other candidate focusing on solving illegal immigration. Since John McCain sided with the amnesty bill last summer until it became obvious to him he needed to change his position, his choice for harassing a fellow Republican was what constitutes torture. With the trend in the media and elsewhere to discuss way too much about national security matters publicly, Romney’s suggestion that it should not be a topic for candidates was refreshing. Huckabee just tipped his hand that reinforces his leaning toward amnesty and spending public funds on illegals. A recent surge in the polls for him only reflects the evangelicals. Apparently they’re okay with amnesty. Slow on the trigger the Thompson overused the abortion card as most religious and pro-life groups have accepted Romney’s stand on abortion.

One last note on the sanctuary city label that Giulianis failed to defend. Even the notorious NYT, that’s right, the New York Times, conceded the sanctuary city status of New York.

The Congressional Research Service, a nonpartisan agency that provides support to members of Congress, issued a report in 2005 that described localities with sanctuary policies as those that have adopted “don’t ask, don’t tell” policies in which city employees, including the police, are not required to report illegal immigrants to the federal authorities.

It listed 32 cities or counties with sanctuary policies, including New York.

Mr. Giuliani had inherited an executive order from previous mayoral administrations that protected illegal immigrants from being reported to federal immigration authorities when using city services. During the presidential campaign, he has repeatedly insisted that the policy was necessary for public health and safety.

The only question that remains is why Giuliani did not reverse the previous executive order claimed to be the beginning of New York City’s official sanctuary city status?

This particular topic shows the other candidates targeting Romney view him as the leader he is for not taking the obvious opportunity to hammer Giuliani on his position which is obviously leaning toward amnesty like Huckabee. If illegal immigration is an important to you, the candidate, Mitt Romney, places a high priority on eliminating illegal immigration. That cannot be said for Giuliani, Huckabee or McCain for sure. Thompson remains a question mark on this issue. And Tancredo is not likely to move to the top tier nor is Ron Paul. Reasons that continue to reinforce this blog’s support for Mitt Romney for President in 2008. There are many more reasons for maintaining that support.

UN Money Game Includes Global Warming

Reject the UN

Listen up fans of international politics. The United Nations is borrowing a page from the uber liberal playbook. Do your best to stir guilt within the richest in the industrial nations so they may follow by preaching to ordinary citizens to justify spending public funds for private agendas. With a knack for plagiarism that would have Joe Biden blush, the UN is adopting the methods of the man who fathered the global warming ponzi scheme, Al Gore.

Are there environmental issues that pose a threat to the long term health of the biosphere we call Earth. Yes. But the current frenzy and panic caused by Al Gore and friends has nothing to do with that. Ecology and all things environmental are nothing new. Even before the sixties when such terms became household words much had been written and addressed on the topic. If two so-called oil shortages or crisis situations took place with no substantive demand or economic viability of alternative forms of energy as a result over the last 30 or 40 years, it is fair to say that few people took the notion seriously enough, including the scientific community, to implement effective change.

Oh, it was or is a corporate conspiracy. Ya, like the 100 or 200 mpg internal combustion engine they bought and hid from the public. So now, why is every other corporation on the planet tripping over themselves to jump on board of Al Gore’s Good Ship Eco-flop? There’s gold in them there hills, that’s why. And it did not take very long for the United Nations to wake up to that fact. Their never ending pursuit of guilt dollars with which to line their pockets now includes posturing on the global warming scare.

Hedging their bets with the advent of cascading failures related to the flagship Millennium Development Goals, supporting Al Gore’s global warming scheme with appeals for money of their own indicates a true talent for extortion. But then you may need to read the full article to appreciate the style with which the scam is presented. Apparently for some, having a large contingent supporting the current rage on GW with an equally large contingent rejecting the notion has not sent up enough red flags leading to a continued search for the truth.

UN Says Billions Needed to Help Poor Countries Deal with Climate Change
By Marianne Kearney
Jakarta
28 November 2007

The United Nations is calling on developed countries to donate billions of dollars to help poorer nations deal with the devastating effects of climate change. Marianne Kearney has more from Jakarta.

A new report by the U.N. Development Program paints a dire picture of how poor people will be affected by climate change. The report calls on first world countries to pay for the damage their greenhouse gas emissions inflict on developing nations.

Two-thirds of the world’s poor live in Asia. The U.N. warns they will be especially vulnerable to the effects of rising temperatures, even if tough measures to limit greenhouse gas emissions are implemented now.

Hakan Bjorkman, the U.N. Development Program’s country director for Indonesia, says more funding is needed to help poorer countries avoid loss of life and income as a result of droughts, flooding and food shortages.

“Only $26 million have been spent through the UNFCC mechanism on adaptation, while something like $86 billion is needed by 2015,” he said.

Bjorkman says most of the funding to help countries deal with the effects of climate change has flowed to wealthy nations rather than poor ones.

In addition, the U.N. estimates that a fund of $25 billion to $50 billion a year is needed to help developing countries switch to cleaner energy sources.

The UNDP’s report says a rise of just two degrees in the oceans’ temperature would cause glaciers in the Himalayas to melt, affecting the food and water source for two billion people in Asia. Increased flow in the region’s rivers would displace 22 million people downstream in Vietnam alone.

The UNDP also warns that rising sea levels would cause the collapse of coral reefs, affecting coastal communities in Indonesia and elsewhere in Asia.

The report calls on developing countries to cut their greenhouse emissions by 80 percent by the year 2050, and says India and China should cut their emissions by 20 percent in the same time frame.

Bjorkman says there is a stark difference between the ability of rich and poor countries to adapt to global warming.

“For example, in the United Kingdom where $1.2 billion is being used to prepare for flooding, in the Netherlands people are investing, with government support, in some kind of floating houses, so when the flooding comes they can actually float up,” said Bjorkman .

While in Ethiopia, adaptation is about women having to walk much further to get water and in Bangladesh its about people building flood shelters on bamboo sticks and in Vietnam there are swimming lessons for women and children.”

The U.N. report also warns that in Indonesia, climate change has already helped lead to an increase in water borne diseases such as malaria and dengue, and in child malnutrition.

Shiite and Sunni Clerics Promote Unity

For those who continue to suggest that recent success in Iraq is some sort of mirage, you may want to consider a report from the AP describing recent developments among the Shiite and Sunni clerics. As is always the case with such news one should remain cautiously optimistic. But to dismiss positive results especially if your prevailing position is that of a far left antiwar surrendering and appeasing liberal makes the case for those who oppose your defeatist and submissive behavior.

The now famous troop surge that was dismissed by liberal critics who are totally invested in defeat for at least political reasons has established a beneficial trend in Iraq. Reports have indicated the improvements were enough to convince displaced Iraqis to return home. And while visitors to my blog have been known to call the reduction in violence an Al-Qaeda ploy to wait out a US departure, the combination of the surge, peaceful pursuits of clerics, returning Iraqis and the continued joint efforts of US forces and tribal leaders against insurgents discredits that conclusion. It appears to be more of a desperate reaction to prop up the failing surrender position of the left. How misguided it is that some people will favor defeat over the very democracy that gives them the freedom to act so stupid.

There is no time like the present to take the opportunity to again express my appreciation for all the men and women in the armed services past and present for their dedication, commitment, courage and sacrifice. Their contribution to the cause of peace and freedom makes it possible for all of us to lead the lives we do and gives hope to those who have yet to reach this universal goal. To take a moment to express thanks is the very least one can do for all that has been bestowed by the selfless acts of others. To oppose or counter or otherwise dishonor their service is a sin for which there is currently no adequate definition.

In the political climate present in these United States it is incumbent upon all of us to take every opportunity to support the troops as there are far too many instances of people and organizations promoting the weakness that only serves the enemy and is detrimental to the future of this nation. Too many have sacrificed too much to allow that to happen. Remember this as the Presidential campaign continues and we are all called to decide who will lead this country. Those who have repeatedly called for surrender in the face of the growing threat of terrorism must not be allowed to be involved in governing this country. Certainly not in the highest office in the land. The Office of President of the United States requires unquestionable strength and complete commitment to resist those who would do harm to this country.

The positive advances in Iraq mentioned earlier need to be fostered by us all. Rather than leave in defeat as suggested by the left we need to depart after victory and assisting a deserving people to live in the peace, freedom and prosperity afforded by the process of democracy.

Iraq’s top Shiite cleric calls for Sunni-Shiite unity, end to sectarian bloodshed
The Associated Press
Published: November 27, 2007

NAJAF, Iraq: Iraq’s top Shiite cleric renewed his call for an end to sectarian violence in the country and for Sunni and Shiite Muslims to unite, according to a Sunni cleric who met him Tuesday in this holy city south of Baghdad.

Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s plea for peace and unity came as a group of Sunni and Shiite clerics met in Najaf in the latest attempt by clerics from both sects to stem the violence. The meeting was sponsored by the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council, Iraq’s most influential Shiite party, which is closely linked to al-Sistani.

Later, Khaled al-Mulla, one of the 10-member Sunni delegation, said the Iranian-born religious leader called for solidarity between the two sects and an end to the bloodshed, which has intensified after a major Shiite shrine north of Baghdad was bombed in February 2006 by Sunni militants.

“I am a servant of all Iraqis,” al-Mulla quoted al-Sistani as saying.

Posted in Public Affairs, Health, wordpress, Politics, campaign, Clinton, hillary on November 27th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

The Clintons
A report from AP accurately describes one of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign items as health insurance. But by the time you get through the first paragraph it has been rechristened ‘her health care plan’. Let’s be clear about a few things. Number one, referring to whatever it is as ‘her health care plan’ is a bit misleading. She did not author the plan but had others do it for her. While other candidates may have enlisted the help of others to outline a response to campaign focus on the health care issue, Clinton repackaged her failed nineties health care plan right down to using the same people to put it together. It is a tax-funded, government regulated, bureaucratically flawed universal health insurance coverage plan. And it is being marketed by the Clinton campaign like the stereotypical used car salesman or, go figure, insurance salesman.

The largest flaw in all the health care proposals being offered is they do not really address the overall issue. Beyond the less than desirable effects for consumers of the results of profit-driven practices within the health care industry, equally counter to the pursuit of effective health care for all is the intervention of government action that produces little benefit with crippling costs and apathetic consumers feeling entitled to all the health care their destructive habits require. That’s it in a nutshell and Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vast experience, wink, wink, has her offering health insurance to solve these problems. Not gonna happen folks.

The economic burdens of the combined costs of fighting the war on terror, a retiring baby boom generation, illegal immigration, off the charts energy demand, out of control health care, a debt-ridden society and government as well as corporate governance run amok partnered with political corruption will cripple this nation if not solved. Say what you will about the strength of the economy and relative merits of public officials and their agendas, these trends cannot be sustained indefinitely.

All the Presidential candidates share responsibility for addressing more than what is dictated by intelligent campaigning. But by far the one candidate hiding the most, sidestepping real issues and satisfied to run a campaign as if already nominated is one Hillary Rodham Clinton. Relying on her bogus claim of experience while criticizing others on the same topic without demonstrating any proof of being qualified to govern reinforces the notion she is merely a surrogate for another Bill Clinton Administration. That is the real reason Democrats defend her scam on the public.

Clinton Touts Health Insurance Plan
By HOLLY RAMER

GOFFSTOWN, N.H. (AP) — Insurance companies should face the same kind of federal regulation as firms that sell stocks and bonds, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday as she outlined her health care plan to voters around a dining room table.

The patchwork of state regulation that insurers now operate under has allowed them to get away with offering meager health care policies and to move to states with more favorable rules, Clinton said. She said the federal government should regulate the companies more, though states still would be able to enact their own rules.

Barack Obama: One of Three Rookies

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Biden, Democrats, Clinton, Opinion, Edwards, Dodd on November 27th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

ObamaEnough Barack Obama news presented itself today that it is time to look at his campaign a little closer. But before the focus is entirely aimed at Obama, a little reflection on the campaign flavor of the three mousecateers is in order. Compared to the careers on the other side of the campaign trail, rather than referring to Clinton, Obama and Edwards as mousecateers, the three rookies would be appropriate. No matter how badly Hillary Rodham Clinton wants you to believe she is the ‘experience’ candidate and calls Obama ‘naive and irresponsible’, the fact is none of them come complete with credentials qualifying them as Presidential candidates. It may just be all the Democratic party has to offer. While Biden and Dodd have more experience, their campaigns show little support and their has not been a former Senator in the White House in a long time.

Clinton slips against Republicans, Obama attacks

WASHINGTON (AFP) — A new poll Monday showed Hillary Clinton losing a general election to all potential Republican White House foes, in a new sign that fierce political attacks may be harming her 2008 campaign.

But the Democratic front-runner insisted she would win the party presidential nod, and warned she would take on her newly aggressive opponents head-on, just 38 days before Iowa’s leadoff caucus nominating contests.

liberal longingIt is fair to say that Obama was on the attack before Monday even if few noticed. Early in the campaign Clinton’s two party rivals followed her lead. When Clinton rolled out an issue piece, Obama and Edwards responded with their own version. Unfortunately, each issue piece needed a name attached for the voters to distinguish one from the others. Obama tried to brand himself the change agent while Clinton opted for fake Southern accents and appearances at events in which she appeared out of place. Edwards took up the classic liberal approach to finding villains and victims with his ineffective poverty tour. The three rookies were trying to campaign. All three touted the party stand of antiwar, anti-troops and other anti-American themes to court their fringe kook far left liberal base complete with surrender monkeys. The Democratic party is perilously invested in that strategy and their candidates mirror the sentiment.

Obama Hits Hillary’s Experience
11/27/07, 12:18 am EST

On Nightline:
The fact of the matter is that Sen. Clinton is claiming basically the entire eight years of the Clinton presidency as her own, except for the stuff that didn’t work out, in which case she says she has nothing to do with it.

None of the three have an impressive resume. Hillary Rodham Clinton continues to press her stay at the White House as her qualifying Presidential experience. Obama makes a point about that being ridiculous. Some say Obama’s time as a US Senator and his time served in the Illinois state legislature tops Clinton’s time as a US Senator and stay in the White House. The simple answer is they are both rookies and no amount of exagerration will change the facts.

Obama and Clinton spar over health care
by Mike Dorning

LITTLETON, N.H.—Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton continued sparring over the details of their health care plans today, with Obama casting doubt on Clinton’s ability to enforce a requirement in her plan that every American buy health insurance.

Clinton has been criticizing Obama’s health care plan for falling short of universal health coverage because unlike her plan his would not require every American to buy insurance. He has argued that his plan would lower the cost of insurance and guarantee access, removing the obstacles most often faced by people without insurance.

health careNot surprisingly both Clinton and Obama miss the point with health care. The issue has been reduced to a discussion of how to solve the uninsured problem, naming it universal health care and allowing those who will to assume it will solve the health care issue. Another sign of rookie inexperience is to portray a potential solution as the end game for an issue resolution. The GOP tends to characterize their offerings as simply a way to get everyone covered and nothing more. While the Dems want you to believe something called universal health care will solve everything.

So far Obama’s campaign makes statements about Clinton when the opposing party has raised a point about one of her many flaws. Merely piling on is less risky than taking the initiative to do more than defend yourself against an opponent’s attacks but is also is less effective and yet another indication that Obama is a rookie as well as Clinton and Edwards.

Can Oprah Effect boost Obama’s political dream?
Nov 27, 2007 04:30 AM
Tim Harper
WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON–She can move books.

We’ll soon learn if Oprah Winfrey can move votes.

America’s daytime diva will join Illinois Senator Barack Obama on the hustings next month in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, three early-voting states critical to his bid to upend New York Senator Hillary Clinton for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

Historically, high-profile endorsements – political or celebrity – have proved far more effective at drawing crowds than actually influencing races, but Winfrey may prove to be the exception.

Oprah WinfreyYou could say that fair is fair. Hillary Rodham Clinton has built her campaign’s foundation on being the husband of former President Bill Clinton. Her only claim of experience comes from living with him in the White House. So naturally when Barack Obama decides it is time for the same thing, he enlists Oprah Winfrey. But it would appear as though the ‘daytime diva’ started this chapter in the Obama campaign by offering her help.

If you have ever witnessed the fan worship in Oprah’s events you will likely have noticed the wide appeal she has that obviously crosses racial, ethnic and gender demographics. So great, now we have two rookie candidates relying on star power that ultimately has nothing to do with being President but may have serious implications on who becomes the nominee. So if you are a Democrat who do you want selecting your candidate for nomination?

His strategists believe that he can win support from cautious female voters worried that Mrs Clinton is unelectable. A new poll last night suggested that she trails the top five Republican presidential candidates in head-to-head match-ups. Such vulnerability is particularly true in Iowa, which has never backed a woman for statewide office or Congress.

The thought occurred while adding the excerpt just above that a backlash should emerge from women everywhere that these two Democratic candidate campaigns are playing them. Only time will tell and we may never really know how this particular demographic responds to being used so blatantly.

Obama discusses racial inequities
By John McCormick and Rick Pearson
Tribune staff reporters
November 25, 2007

DES MOINES, Iowa - Barack Obama held a rare discussion of racial inequities on the Democratic presidential campaign trail in heavily white Iowa on Sunday while rival Hillary Clinton declared herself to be “by far” the most electable Democrat in the race.

voting boothsThis is the one topic for which it was a long wait for Barack Obama to employ. Granted, a black candidate is probably damned if he does or doesn’t on the topic of racial issues. Not engaging the discussion may lend support for those who ask if he is black enough for black voters as happened shortly after his campaign announcement. Or those who view a topic suited only to a candidate of color as using the race card to his advantage. Obama being black and racial issues not being invented by him are facts that he cannot influence. Deciding on whether or not to address them is something he can influence. The perspective here is that it may have been more advantageous to address the topic as it is raised by others. Let someone else get it started.

Obama Casts Self As Civil Rights Successor

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) cast himself Sunday as a natural and necessary heir to the civil rights greats, appealing to black worshipers to show the courage of their forerunners and back his candidacy for president.

With the story above it is clear that Barack Obama has chosen to embrace the role of civil rights activist. That lays to rest the earlier question of how he would handle the topic of race. It is viewed as a rookie move here simply because the campaign upside is limited and it exposes him to more possible criticism. That criticism has been around before. The question of whether he is the genuine article and how he is viewed by black voters seems a difficult campaign equation to calculate. Hence the conclusion that there is more risk to this option than upside.

Everything about Barack Obama screams rookie while it would appear the strategy to brand him the agent of change as stated earlier is intended to overcome the lack of experience. Change for the sake of change and championed by a rookie with unclear intentions is not something a risk averse voter would embrace. Whether the first viable black candidate can overcome such hurdles is yet to be determined. One thing seems clear. As the real voting edges nearer, Barack Obama appears to be nibbling away successfully at the Clinton lead.

Consider 911 When Thinking ‘Clinton’

Posted in Public Affairs, Terrorism, war, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Clinton, Osama bin Laden, United States, hillary, Pelosi, Reid on November 26th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

HRC
While reading an article from September 2006 about all the angst generated
over the ABC airing of ‘The Path to 9/11′, the following set of excerpts
from the 911 Commission Report seemed the logical course of action for a post
on the matter.

Like so many issues that find themselves published in the MSM and later spread
around the blogosphere for additional consumption and discussion, there is a
tendency for neglecting the issue or issues after a first run or even subsequent run
through both venues.

Certainly, since Hillary Rodham Clinton wants her time in the White House to
count as experience qualifying her for the Office of President of the United States,
this blog feels compelled to challenge her on that point. If you seriously want your
time in the White House to count then barring the public from viewing your ‘docs’
related to the time in question speaks to your habit of selecting what information
the public is allowed to consider. Early, Senator Clinton, you ‘bristled’ at the mere
mention of the ‘i’ word, aka ‘impeachment’. You claim all manner of involvement
in legislation and Congressional initiatives but you offer no proof. How do you
demonstrate that claimed involvement?

Your only well-known involvement over the years is your failed health care plan
from the 90’s, part of your White House ‘experience’. And your only mention in
the 911 Commission Report in the following excerpts is as an impediment to the
task of ending the terrorist efforts of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda.

But beyond the case against you as qualified or experienced or in this country’s
best interest as a candidate for President is the additional problem of former
President Bill Clinton and your marriage to him meaning you both would be in
the White House, as well as your continued connection with Sandy Berger and
others in view of the 911 Commission Report excerpts provided suggest that the
previous failures related to protecting this country from the threat of terrorism
may carry the same risk of failure as the last time you and your husband had the
chance to do something about it.

For those of you who may not care for or trust my selection of excerpts and the
paraphrasing of selected paragraphs, you are of course free to obtain your own
copy of the publicly available report and read it yourself. As it is, this post has
become excessively large and is in part responsible for the selection process that
was intended to display items pointing to missed or failed opportunities and the
decision process of the Clinton Administration on terrorism and protecting this
country.

page 108 of the 911 Commission Report

President Bill Clinton’s counterterrorism Presidential Decision Directives
in 1995 (no. 39) and May 1998 (no. 62) reiterated that terrorism was a national
security problem, not just a law enforcement issue. They reinforced the author-
ity of the National Security Council (NSC) to coordinate domestic as well as
foreign counterterrorism efforts, through Richard Clarke and his interagency
Counterterrorism Security Group (CSG). Spotlighting new concerns about
unconventional attacks, these directives assigned tasks to lead agencies but did
not differentiate types of terrorist threats. Thus, while Clarke might prod or push
agencies to act, what actually happened was usually decided at the State Depart-
ment, the Pentagon, the CIA, or the Justice Department. The efforts of these
agencies were sometimes energetic and sometimes effective. Terrorist plots were
disrupted and individual terrorists were captured. But the United States did not,
before 9/11, adopt as a clear strategic objective the elimination of al Qaeda.

from page 109 of the 911 Commission Report

By 1997, officers in the Bin Ladin unit recognized that Bin Ladin was more
than just a financier. They learned that al Qaeda had a military committee that
was planning operations against U.S. interests worldwide and was actively try-
ing to obtain nuclear material. Analysts assigned to the station looked at the
information it had gathered and “found connections everywhere,” including
links to the attacks on U.S. troops in Aden and Somalia in 1992 and 1993 and
to the Manila air plot in the Philippines in 1994–1995.

The Bin Ladin station was already working on plans for offensive opera-
tions against Bin Ladin. These plans were directed at both physical assets and
sources of finance. In the end, plans to identify and attack Bin Ladin’s money
sources did not go forward.

In Afghanistan, the State Department tried to end the civil war that had con-
tinued since the Soviets’ withdrawal. The South Asia bureau believed it might
have a carrot for Afghanistan’s warring factions in a project by the Union Oil
Company of California (UNOCAL) to build a pipeline across the country.
While there was probably never much chance of the pipeline actually being
built, the Afghan desk hoped that the prospect of shared pipeline profits might
lure faction leaders to a conference table. U.S. diplomats did not favor the Tal-
iban over the rival factions. Despite growing concerns, U.S. diplomats were
willing at the time, as one official said, to “give the Taliban a chance.”

Though Secretary Albright made no secret of thinking the Taliban “despi-
cable,” the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Bill Richardson, led a del-
egation to South Asia—including Afghanistan—in April 1998. No U.S. official
of such rank had been to Kabul in decades.Ambassador Richardson went pri-
marily to urge negotiations to end the civil war. In view of Bin Ladin’s recent
public call for all Muslims to kill Americans, Richardson asked the Taliban to
expel Bin Ladin. They answered that they did not know his whereabouts. In
any case, the Taliban said, Bin Ladin was not a threat to the United States.

In sum, in late 1997 and the spring of 1998, the lead U.S. agencies each pur-
sued their own efforts against Bin Ladin. The CIA’s Counterterrorist Center was
developing a plan to capture and remove him from Afghanistan. Parts of the Jus-
tice Department were moving toward indicting Bin Ladin, making possible a
criminal trial in a New York court. Meanwhile, the State Department was focused
more on lessening Indo-Pakistani nuclear tensions, ending the Afghan civil war,
and ameliorating the Taliban’s human rights abuses than on driving out Bin
Ladin. Another key actor, Marine General Anthony Zinni, the commander in
chief of the U.S. Central Command, shared the State Department’s view.

from MoreWhat.com:
After the terror attacks at embassies in Africa and close monitoring of Bin Laden,
intel confirmed he and his associated were responsible and a plan was hatched.

from page 116 of the 911 Commission Report

Debate about what to do settled very soon on one option:Tomahawk cruise
missiles. Months earlier, after cancellation of the covert capture operation,
Clarke had prodded the Pentagon to explore possibilities for military action.
On June 2, General Hugh Shelton, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
had directed General Zinni at Central Command to develop a plan, which he
had submitted during the first week of July. Zinni’s planners surely considered
the two previous times the United States had used force to respond to terror-
ism, the 1986 strike on Libya and the 1993 strike against Iraq. They proposed
fir ing Tomahawks against eight terrorist camps in Afghanistan, including Bin
Ladin’s compound at Tarnak Farms.38 After the embassy attacks, the Pentagon
offered this plan to the White House.

The day after the embassy bombings,Tenet brought to a principals meeting
intelligence that terrorist leaders were expected to gather at a camp near
Khowst,Afghanistan, to plan future attacks. According to Berger,Tenet said that
several hundred would attend, including Bin Ladin. The CIA described the area
as effectively a military cantonment, away from civilian population centers and
overwhelmingly populated by jihadists. Clarke remembered sitting next to
Tenet in a White House meeting, asking Tenet “You thinking what I’m think-
ing?” and his nodding “yes.”39 The principals quickly reached a consensus on
attacking the gathering. The strike’s purpose was to kill Bin Ladin and his chief
lieutenants.

from MoreWhat.com:
The plan was executed and failed. President Clinton was in the middle of the
Lewinsky and the ‘I did not have sex with that woman’ scandal. Opponents saw
the strike as a planned distraction away from the scandal. Other attempts to
do something about Al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Afghanistan were sought.

from page 124 of the 911 Commission Report

Discussion within the Clinton administration on Afghanistan then concen-
trated on two main alternatives. The first, championed by Riedel and Assistant
Secretary of State Karl Inderfurth, was to undertake a major diplomatic effort
to end the Afghan civil war and install a national unity government. The sec-
ond, favored by Sheehan, Clarke, and the CIA, called for labeling the Taliban a
ter ror ist group and ultimately funneling secret aid to its chief foe, the North-
er n Alliance. This dispute would go back and forth throughout 1999 and ulti-
mately become entangled with debate about enlisting the Northern Alliance
as an ally for covert action.84

Another diplomatic option may have been available: nurtur ing Afghan exile
groups as a possible moderate governing alternative to the Taliban. In late 1999,
Washington provided some support for talks among the leaders of exile Afghan
groups, including the ousted Rome-based King Zahir Shah and Hamid Karzai,
about bolstering anti-Taliban forces inside Afghanistan and linking the
Northern Alliance with Pashtun groups. One U.S. diplomat later told us that
the exile groups were not ready to move forward and that coordinating frac-
tious groups residing in Bonn, Rome, and Cyprus proved extremely difficult.

Frustrated by the Taliban’s resistance, two senior State Department officials
suggested asking the Saudis to offer the Taliban $250 million for Bin Ladin.
Clarke opposed having the United States facilitate a “huge grant to a regime
as heinous as the Taliban” and suggested that the idea might not seem attrac-
tive to either Secretary Albright or First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton—both
critics of the Taliban’s record on women’s rights. The proposal seems to have
quietly died.

paraphrasing following paragraphs:

Sheehan and Clarke wanted the Taliban designated a state sponsor of terror. In
November 1999, UN sanctions were to begin and Clarke wrote to Berger that the
Taliban were up to something. Mullah Omar had no interest in commerce with the
outside world so the sanctions were useless. The US would try tougher sanctions
in 2000.

The US attempted to have Pakistan stop the Taliban from protecting Bin Ladin.
Clinton met with Sharif in July. It was hoped a Musharraf coup might help with
action on Bin Laden. There was no success in dealing with the Taliban or those
in Pakistan.

The CIA was working on a plan to have tribal forces capture Bin Laden. Bin Laden
had taken to moving frequently after the failed missile strikes. US officials
were now concerned about domestic attacks.

There were plenty of suggested scenarios but no one knew what was being planned.
A federal indictment against Bin Laden was unsealed and it contained charges that
included Al-Qaeda conspiring with Iraq as the terrorist would not target the
country and may even cooperate on attacks.

Then there is a currently declassified, yet redacted, report from a Presidential
daily briefing pointing to a likely domestic terror attack including aircraft
being hijacked.

After considering options to protect against or respond after a domestic attack,
another plan to get Bin Laden, this time to kill him, was hatched.

from page 130 of the 911 Commission Report

The CIA reported on December 18 (1999) that Bin Ladin might be traveling to
Kandahar and could be targeted there with cruise missiles. Vessels with Tom-
ahawk cruise missiles were on station in the Arabian Sea, and could fire within
a few hours of receiving target data.
On December 20, intelligence indicated Bin Ladin would be spending the
night at the Haji Habash house, par t of the governor’s residence in Kanda-
har.The chief of the Bin Ladin unit,“Mike,” told us that he promptly briefed
Tenet and his deputy, John Gordon. From the field, the CIA’s Gary Schroen
advised: “Hit him tonight—we may not get another chance.”An urgent tele-
conference of principals was arranged.

The principals considered a cruise missile strike to try to kill Bin Ladin. One
issue they discussed was the potential collateral damage—the number of inno-
cent bystanders who would be killed or wounded. General Zinni predicted a
number well over 200 and was concerned about damage to a nearby mosque.
The senior intelligence officer on the Joint Staff apparently made a different
calculation, estimating half as much collateral damage and not predicting dam-
age to the mosque. By the end of the meeting, the principals decided against
recommending to the President that he order a strike.A few weeks later, in Jan-
uary 1999, Clarke wrote that the principals had thought the intelligence only
half reliable and had worried about killing or injuring perhaps 300 people.
Tenet said he remembered doubts about the reliability of the source and con-
cern about hitting the nearby mosque.“Mike” remembered Tenet telling him
that the military was concerned that a few hours had passed since the last sight-
ing of Bin Ladin and that this persuaded everyone that the chance of failure
was too great.

Some lower-level officials were angry.“Mike” reported to Schroen that he
had been unable to sleep after this decision. “I’m sure we’ll regret not acting
last night,” he wrote, cr iticizing the principals for “worrying that some stray
shrapnel might hit the Habash mosque and ‘offend’ Muslims.” He commented
that they had not shown comparable sensitivity when deciding to bomb Mus-
lims in Iraq. The principals, he said, were “obsessed” with trying to get oth-
ers—Saudis, Pakistanis,Afghan tribals—to “do what we won’t do.” Schroen was
disappointed too.“We should have done it last night,” he wrote.“We may well
come to regret the decision not to go ahead.”119 The Joint Staff ’s deputy direc-
tor for operations agreed, even though he told us that later intelligence
appeared to show that Bin Ladin had left his quarters before the strike would
have occurred. Missing Bin Ladin, he said, “would have caused us a hell of a
problem, but it was a shot we should have taken, and we would have had to
pay the price.”

from MoreWhat.com:
So the next time you want to lay all the blame at the feet of President Bush,
remember there is a wealth of reading material concerning 911 and the events
leading up to it. The Democratic majority in Congress led by White Flag Reid
and No Way Nancy love to proclaim the virtues of the Commissions’ recommendations
but avoid conversations about the Clinton Administration and missed opportunities.
Similarly, Hillary Rodham Clinton espouses all manner of experience related to
her time as First Lady in the White House. Her name is even mentioned in the
Commission’s report. Sadly it is so mentioned in Section 4.5 merely as proof of
her distracting top level officials in their deliberations on what to do and who
will be annoyed. That officials would be concerned about Madeleine Albright’s or
Hillary Clinton’s take on women’s issues while attending to the task of responding
to terrorism is so far out of touch it serves as the general tone of the former
Clinton Administration and no need for another one.

While good news from Iraq should never be overlooked with the MSM tendency to focus on the bad, overstating the good news would be counterproductive at the least. With the uber liberal left totally invested in defeat at every turn and sporting their surrender monkey mascot, the stunning success of the troop surge in Iraq was enough evidence for the media to begin covering positive stories about Iraq but that is not the case with White Flag Harry Reid and his sidekick No Way Nancy.

Enter the much criticized United Nations. They may have published accurate figures on some of the stats of returning Iraqis based on a comparison with the following report from Alsumaria TV.

Hundreds of Iraqi displaced return home
Friday, November 23, 2007 10:36 GMT
Encouraged by the reduction of violence in Baghdad, hundreds of Iraqi citizens returned to their hometown, in a moving scene that had refugees shed tears as they got back together with their families and relatives.
Displaced Minister Abdul Samad Sultan confirmed that thousands of people have returned to Iraq while many of them owned houses which were taken while they were gone. In this context, Sultan explained that the Ministry is coordinating with Iraqi-US security operations commanders in Baghdad to help returning displaced regain their homes. Yet, international rescue organizations noted that the number of displaced inside Iraq exceeds the number of returning citizens.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Finances Minister Bayan Jaber Sulag arrived to Damascus in a visit aimed to offer a $ 52 million aid to Syria in support to its efforts of caring for hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees on its territory.

But the UN can’t be expected to be on the same page with others on all information and they have a knack for overstating the obvious. Besides numbers on returning Iraqis, the UN states Iraq offered $15 million to Syria as financial assistance for dealing with refugees. The report above puts the number at $52 million. But then the UN is not known for their ability to handle money properly. They also warn that encouraging Iraqis to return home is a bad idea since the region is still not stable enough. Do you suppose the Iraqis are capable of making that distinction on their own? Who should know better how things are going? A group that left Iraq at the first sign of trouble or citizens thoroughly invested in the future of Iraq? And of course the UN makes the case that Iraqis are returning because of visa requirements in refugee host countries like Syria and because they are running out of money. They reject the notion that any are returning due to the improved security conditions. Certainly violence is not a thing of the past in Iraq but drawing conclusions about anything in the region is a risky proposition.

UN refugee agency warns against return to Iraq
Fri Nov 23, 9:54 AM ET

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees “does not believe that the time has come to promote, organise or encourage returns” given the volatile and unpredictable security situation in Iraq, spokeswoman Jennifer Pagonis told journalists.

“Presently, there is no sign of any large-scale return to Iraq,” she added.

Iraq said earlier this week that it will offer Syria 15 million dollars (10 million euros) to help pay the costs of sheltering refugees.

Then there is the estimate in general of people displaced as a result of violence in Iraq. Some reports say about 2 million Iraqis are displaced while others have the number at 4 million. This might be explained by not separating internal from external displacements.

The number of internally displaced people, or IDPs, in Iraq grew by 16 percent in September - to 2,299,425, the Red Crescent said. That figure has skyrocketed since the beginning of 2007, when less than half a million people were listed as displaced.

The following report from the BBC reflects the most common report on the numbers but there are plenty of others out there.

Iraq’s ministry of migration told the BBC about 1,000 people were returning every day.

The UN’s refugee agency, the UNHCR, estimates about 45,000 Iraqis returned from Syria in October - the first month of the school year.

WHERE IRAQIS HAVE FLED TO
Syria: 1,400,000
Jordan: 750,000
Gulf states: 200,000
Egypt: 100,000
Iran: 54,000
Lebanon: 40,000
Turkey: 10,000
Internally displaced: At least 2,000,000
Source: UNHCR (October 2007)

Note that the BBC indicates Iraq’s ministry puts the number at 1,000 per day yet the UN estimates 45,000 during a one month period. And the UN supplied numbers on refugees to each country plus internal and external displacements seems to be inflated when compared to other reports. Since they just admitted their AIDS numbers were exaggerated it would not be unreasonable to suspect this is another math failure for the United Nations. Still, the most annoying part of the UN’s take on Iraq is that they have a take at all. It would be nice if there were a few issues and events in which they did not feel compelled to butt in. In other words, keep your opinions, suggestions and urgings to yourself from time to time. If for no other reason than to not be so predictable.

There are so many tasks that the United Nations fails at miserably it would be in their best interest and certainly ours if they would limit their involvement in world affairs to focus on a handful of items in an effort to improve their performance. Rather than take on all the world’s problems their own Millennium Development Goals failures should be adequate proof they need to reduce their workload. Please, take this hint. Scale it back to maybe one project per year. If you can successfully complete one, then the following year try two, and so on.

The United Nations performance does not indicate they should be giving advice to anyone. And that certainly includes the Iraqis. These people have suffered enough and they are entitled to make their won decisions without unnecessary interference from the UN.

In conclusion, it may be fair to state that hundreds of Iraqis are returning to Iraq. The rate may be as high as 1,000 or so per month. The total number of persons displaced may be 4 million. And the US military troop surge has made it possible for people to consider returning. It is likely they understand that the risks of violence still exist but the situation is much improved. More people speaking on Iraq could express the good news rather than focusing on the obvious and typical darker sides of war. That can help bring this to a speedier conclusion.
