Yellow: The Color of Journalism in NH
Posted in wordpress on December 25th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews ![]()
The inflammatory tactics used by ‘journalists’.
sensational or deliberately false reporting
sensationalist journalism
Yellow journalism is a pejorative reference to sensationalism or unethical
or unprofessional acts by the news media or journalists.
The four references above were provided in case you need them. The following references are from other media around the country reporting on the Concord Monitor’s style of journalism regarding their scare tactics against Mitt Romney.
The more characteristic endorsements of candidates from newspapers around the country was always a curious tradition. Maybe the Concord Monitor is too embarrassed to endorse their real choice and prefer to attack another candidate with misinformation.
Maybe this paper referred to as liberal should obtain a 527 standing before they use freedom of the press to promote their political viewpoint. Even endorsements as usual seem to take unfair advantage of ‘the press’ credentials of what appears in this case to be crossing a thin line between ‘journalism’ and paid campaign advertising masquerading as journalism. Editorial or not, the information proposed as fact can certainly be challenged. Perhaps the editorial author would like to subject every public word attributed to him to the same sort of practice displayed by the Concord Monitor.
This same strategy was wasted by other opponents of Mitt Romney. One of the few things that Giuliani has said during the campaign that made sense was something to the effect that people have the right to change their minds and if a mistake is made to correct it. An idea abandoned by participants in campaigns due to the ease of attacking each other based on evolving positions from evolving conditions. Elected officials in a republic represent the people but are not required to act on the opinions of the public. This also means they may have a personal opinion but will adjust it based on changing conditions or that they decide to honor an overwhelming response for another choice presented by constituents.
A more current example would be the reports of individuals who opposed the troop surge in Iraq but now that it is working are willing to continue with it or better yet, now support the pursuit of victory. Things change and the audacity of those like the Concord Monitor to try and influence an election by publishing their version of the truth is certainly objectionable and worse, dishonest. Not something to which real newspapers aspire.

By James H. Snowden
Nights differ as much as days. Some nights have witnessed great events and been charged with ethical significance in the history of the world. One such night stands forth crowned with supreme distinction, the night that heard angels sing, and was starred with the Birth of Bethlehem. This book treats the various events and steps that led to the central wonder and interprets the story in terms of its significance today and invests it with poetic light.
If you look in the right side bar under ‘Pages’, the complete story described above is presented here thanks to The Gutenberg Project. (it is simply titled ‘02 Christmas’ under the ‘Pages’ heading.
Muslims Issue Holiday Greetings to Christians

25 December 2007
A group of leading Muslim scholars has sent holiday greetings to Christians worldwide.
In wishing a joyful and peaceful Christmas, the group also gave thanks for what it calls the “beautiful and gracious” response to its call for more openness between the faiths.
The group said it hopes the coming year will be one of forgiveness and where the dignity of human life is upheld.
Pope Benedict last month accepted an invitation by the 138 Muslim scholars to meet and talk about more cooperation between Muslims and Christians.

Pope Celebrates Midnight Mass in Vatican, Pilgrims Mark Christmas in Bethlehem
Christmas Day has arrived in Rome where Pope Benedict is conducting a traditional midnight mass in the Vatican.
Pilgrims have come from across the globe to celebrate Christmas with the pope and to hear his traditional blessing (Urbi et Orbi — to the City [Rome] and the World).
Millions more are watching the mass on television.
Earlier Monday, Benedict lit a candle for peace in a window looking out over St. Peter’s Square, where Vatican officials unveiled an unusual nativity scene. Instead of depicting the birth of Jesus in the traditional manger, this year’s scene shows the Nazareth home and carpenter’s workshop of Joseph and Mary, Jesus’ parents.
Christmas celebrations are also underway in the West Bank town of Bethlehem, the place where Christians say Jesus was born.
Tens of thousands of tourists are in the region — significantly more than recent years when violence between Israelis and Palestinians kept many foreigners away.
From the U.S. presidential retreat in Maryland, President Bush telephoned Christmas wishes to members of the armed forces stationed abroad. Mr. Bush and his family are celebrating the holiday at the Camp David presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command is also doing its part for the holiday, a time when some children await the arrival of Santa Claus. Norad is tracking what it says is Santa’s progress on a website complete with Santacam videos and Google Earth backdrops. (www.noradsanta.org).
Pilgrims Join Palestinians to Celebrate Christmas Eve in Bethlehem

Bethlehem
24 December 2007
Thousands of pilgrims joined local Palestinians in celebrating Christmas Eve in the West Bank town of Bethlehem. As Robert Berger reports for VOA from Bethlehem, the observances were more cheerful than in previous years.
Palestinian boy and girl scouts paraded through Manger Square in Bethlehem, kicking off Christmas celebrations. Playing drums and bagpipes, they marched past the Church of the Nativity, which is believed to be the birthplace of Jesus. Security was tight. Dozens of Palestinian police patrolled the streets, some armed with assault rifles.
Then the Latin Patriarch arrived.
Dressed in purple robes, the head of the Roman Catholic Church in the Holy Land is leading a solemn procession into the church of the Nativity. He is followed by priests dressed in white who are chanting the Christmas liturgy. A big crowd is looking on including local Palestinians and pilgrims from around the world.
After staying away for many years because of Israeli-Palestinian violence, pilgrims returned this year.
“It’s a more joyful Christmas. We have more tourists, we have more pilgrims coming to the city of Bethlehem, twice as much as last year,” said Bethleham Mayor Victor Batarseh to VOA. “All the hotels are booked. I think this Christmas brings more joy to all the citizens of Bethlehem.”
The mayor attributes the change to a lull in violence and the revival of the peace process.
Anne Nicholson, from the American state of Alabama, said the Prince of Peace is what Bethlehem is all about.
“My heart is just bursting with joy to be here. Honored, privileged, humbled. I’ve heard just about every language you can hear spoken today,” said Nicholson. “And the common denominator is the love of Christ that has brought people from all over the world to this place, to be in a spot that we know that Christ was born here.”
Palestinians complain that Israel’s separation barrier ringing Bethlehem has turned the city into a big prison. But on this Christmas, at least, they welcomed in the outside world to celebrate.

Twas the Night Before Christmas
A Visit from St. Nicholas
By Clement C. Moore
‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
“Now, _Dasher!_ now, _Dancer!_ now, _Prancer_ and _Vixen!_
On, _Comet!_ on, _Cupid!_ on, _Donder_ and _Blitzen!_
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes–how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
_”Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”_
Amid the many celebrations last Christmas Eve, in various places by
different persons, there was one, in New York City, not like any other
anywhere. A company of men, women, and children went together just after
the evening service in their church, and, standing around the tomb of
the author of “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” recited together the words of
the poem which we all know so well and love so dearly.
Dr. Clement C. Moore, who wrote the poem, never expected that he would
be remembered by it. If he expected to be famous at all as a writer, he
thought it would be because of the Hebrew Dictionary that he wrote.
He was born in a house near Chelsea Square, New York City, in 1781; and
he lived there all his life. It was a great big house, with fireplaces
in it;–just the house to be living in on Christmas Eve.
Dr. Moore had children. He liked writing poetry for them even more than
he liked writing a Hebrew Dictionary. He wrote a whole book of poems for
them.
One year he wrote this poem, which we usually call “‘Twas the Night
before Christmas,” to give to his children for a Christmas present. They
read it just after they had hung up their stockings before one of the
big fireplaces in their house. Afterward, they learned it, and sometimes
recited it, just as other children learn it and recite it now.
It was printed in a newspaper. Then a magazine printed it, and after a
time it was printed in the school readers. Later it was printed by
itself, with pictures. Then it was translated into German, French, and
many other languages. It was even made into “Braille”; which is the
raised printing that blind children read with their fingers. But never
has it been given to us in so attractive a form as in this book. It has
happened that almost all the children in the world know this poem. How
few of them know any Hebrew!
Every Christmas Eve the young men studying to be ministers at the
General Theological Seminary, New York City, put a holly wreath around
Dr. Moore’s picture, which is on the wall of their dining-room. Why?
Because he gave the ground on which the General Theological Seminary
stands? Because he wrote a Hebrew Dictionary? No. They do it because he
was the author of “A Visit from St. Nicholas.”
Most of the children probably know the words of the poem. They are old.
But the pictures that Miss Jessie Willcox Smith has painted for this
edition of it are new. All the children, probably, have seen other
pictures painted by Miss Smith, showing children at other seasons of the
year. How much they will enjoy looking at these pictures, showing
children on that night that all children like best,–Christmas Eve!

The Ron Paul Party
Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, News Media on December 24th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews
First things first, a post about dirty tricks applied to the campaign of Ron Paul raises an obvious response. Why should the Paul campaign be exempt. Plenty of examples of dirty politics is present in the Clinton/Obama/Edwards battle as well as within the top tier of GOP campaigns. Unfortunately, that is just the political game in America as well as other venues where mere mortals seek divine status.
Dirty-Trick Artists Smear Ron Paul
Posted by Lew Rockwell
December 24, 2007
Not unlike the surprising struggle of the Clinton campaign lately or the rise in popularity of the Huckmeister, Ron Paul’s fund raising feats while impressive seem to mimic the ’small contributor’ success earlier from the Obama campaign. Better is the possibility as mentioned in the reference above, that those who have drifted away from politics may be again engaging the process. That has to be a good thing.
Other notable Ron Paul headlines:
Campaign sensation may be a stretch but if Ron Paul actually scores in Iowa or another early contest that may become a real headline. Rather than dirty tricks the mention of spending preferences of Ron Paul, above, may be fair game with his stated positions on the size of government and taxes, etc.
Not ruling out a third party run is a good thing for everyone to keep the momentum going for something outside the two major parties. While this blog supports Mitt Romney for President there is no objection to a positive influence on the process from Ron Paul although some of his philosophy raises objections here. The top complaint on this blog is his position on the military and the troops as well as surrender in Iraq.

Some reports suggest that TO’s injury in the Carolina vs Dallas game on Dec. 22nd may keep him out of the final game against the Washington Redskins. A high ankle sprain sounds like something that may be compensated for in a week between games but even if Owens can play he may not be in top form. How that translates into optimism for Green Bay Packer fans is unclear. Well, except the obvious wishful thinking that Washington could erase the dismal performance by Green Bay in this season’s matchup against the Cowboys. While a stunning set of stats was turned in by back up QB Aaron Rogers during that game, the Cowboys have had the Pack’s number since Aikman was leading the team.
But you gotta love the triangle. TO, Simpson and Romo may not be a typical triangle but it suits some fans right now. Is Romo goo goo eyed over Simpson? Did she affect his ability to perform? (wink, wink). TO seemed to think so. But how would he know?
Whether you support the Packers or the Cowboys, or even the Redskins, download a game face at the link provided under the, go figure, game face and fill the stadium for the Dallas/Washington game. Jessica Simpson will love the attention and who knows, if the Cowboys fall to Washington the chatter about this may continue.
No Cowboy fans on this blog so the support goes to the Pack. You don’t suppose that inspired this post do you? Nah. As long as a celeb story is not perverse like PH or BS, etc., this blog may post something for fun.
Go Pack.

In the spirit of the season of giving this Christmas post is dedicated to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces around the world in places like Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. Also in the spirit of the season it should be made clear that goodwill toward men is a phrase that requires setting aside other matters if only for a moment as dictated by circumstance. With that in mind you may still find it a little peculiar that there would be a kind word for an outfit like MoveOn.org. But hey, it’s Christmas and regardless of anything else and that things may change shortly, one should give credit where credit is due. Assuming this is not a hoax and ignoring the natural tendency to comment on items outside the scope of the story, Stanford Matthews from the Blog @ MoreWhat.com would like to go on record thanking those at MoveOn.org for raising a serious six figures for the troops at Christmas.
Even The Grinch Would Like This: MoveOn Raising Money For Troops
By Martin Kady II

It is not a surprise that President Bush would again remind the country of our troops and their families for the incredible sacrifice and commitment being contributed daily. At the very least we can remember them in our prayers and spread the word so they know we are thinking of them and exceedingly grateful for their service. The President’s weekly radio address included an often repeated sentiment for the troops as reported by VOA. Try to ignore the remainder of the report about someone else’s take which is not so pleasant.
President Bush Praises US Troops, Their Families
By Sean Maroney
Washington
22 December 2007
There are news reports of generous efforts being provided by the public and various organizations to help the troops have some kind of Christmas away from home. If you want to help there are nearly countless ways to pitch in. If you have no idea where to start, simply use google and type the words troops and Christmas. Plenty of results will point you in the right direction. Or of course you can check with the DOD, any of the armed services, the USO or your elected representatives or the VA or someone.
And finally, let’s make that annual effort to extend the good we think of during the holidays so the New Year can bring the kind of solutions needed to solve some of the world’s problems. If we all try again and keep repeating these sentiments to each other long enough, we might finally succeed with some major improvements.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year or whatever sentiment does it for you. Cheers.
British Unease Grows with Foreign Workers

On Friday night, December 21, 2007 the News Hour on PBS had the public suffer through an excessively long interview with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. The only humor injected in this conversation came at the very beginning when Reid was introduced and when ‘welcomed’ to the broadcast replied, ‘thank you for allowing me on..’

Senate Majority Leader Reid Weighs Partisan Divides, Security in Iraq

RAY SUAREZ: Senator Reid, welcome to the program.
If you have a tendency toward conspiracy theories you could surmise the interview was prompted by Reid. But that can’t be. After all, this is journalism in America. Subjects of an interview don’t influence their selection. Besides the lame inquiry opening the interview pointing to the pathetic performance of the majority, Reid often repeated his claim that the minority blocked Democratic party initiatives 62 times and that it was some kind of record. His claim that the Democratic party supports the troops with their failed surrender strategy may also have annoyed viewers.
But the left’s amnesty agenda masquerading as immigration reform is the topic of this post. It is reasonable to note that those supporting the rule of law and opposing amnesty are not the only ones on the planet displeased by the fantasy of the ‘global economy’. Offshore outsourcing and the importation of cheap labor are trends that only serve the corporate boardroom. The following reference from 2004 adequately addresses a typical sham of the ‘global’ propaganda.
Workers asked to train foreign replacements
By Stephanie Armour, USA TODAY
4/6/2004
The report below from VOA News echoes a sentiment often employed by those who support amnesty for illegal immigrants in the United States. The emotional appeal employed to embarrass or insult opponents of amnesty for illegal immigrants at best succeeds with the latter outcome. That illegals are only here in pursuit of a job or better life and that the US is a nation of immigrants ignores much about the past and ignores other American traditions; not the least of which is playing by the rules.
The situation in Britain mirrors some characteristics of the US problem. They have organized opposition to their immigration problem and a member states the situation only benefits the few. The similarities lend support to the notion that those supporting unreasonable immigration policies do so for personal gain and not the altruistic reasons often claimed in support of the pursuit of bigger profits at the expense of the people and country that made their financial success possible.
British Unease Grows with Foreign Workers

Listen to Pace report
The British government is set to announce a series of measures early next year to tighten restrictions on immigrant workers. A booming economy has attracted foreigners to Britain from many parts of the world in recent years, especially from the new members of the European Union, but also from the United States, Asia and Africa. While many provide a crucial source of labor, their arrival has also sparked an uneasy debate in Britain over a growing migrant work force. VOA’s Sonja Pace has more from London.
The building boom in Britain may be driven by a strong economy, but the work is carried out largely by foreigners.
British government statistics indicate that more than 2.5 million foreign workers have registered in Britain since 2002.
The largest single group of legal migrants has come from Poland. Zbigniew Cwik is one of them. He says when he first came here life was difficult, without his family and long hours.
“The work was from morning to evening so I am just thinking about the work,” he said.
He goes by Zibbi, for short. He originally came on a training course, stayed, found work doing construction and home refurbishments, brought his family over and eventually started his own business.
Many of the newcomers from parts of Europe arrive here by bus, hoping to find a job and a better life. More than 220,000 Polish workers have registered in Britain in the past year. And, in all, some 700,000 East European workers have come here since the 2004 EU expansion, which opened avenues for them to work in Britain legally.
Hugo Brady of the Center for European Reform says migrant workers are behind Britain’s economic boom.
“Really, immigration in this sense as per the 2004 enlargement has been a win-win situation. I can’t think of any situation in Europe in which it has not been beneficial,” he said.
While some work in highly skilled jobs, most migrants do not. They work in construction, in agriculture - they build roads, sweep streets, clean houses, tend gardens and take care of other people’s children.
And, not everyone is pleased with the influx. The chairman of the lobby group, Migration Watch UK, Andrew Green says the migrant workforce benefits only a few.
“Polish immigration is great news for the chattering classes, because you get cheap nannies, you get cheap restaurants, you get wonderful gardeners and the plumbers are wonderful,” he said. “If you happen to be a British plumber it’s not so good.”
Migration Watch wants tougher immigration limits.
“We’ve got a million young [British] people who are not in education, not in training, not in work,” he added. “Now it’s even more difficult to get those people into the work force if you’ve got literally hundreds of thousands of bright, young Poles ready to do the job.”
But, Britain also hosts migrants from non-EU states, including from the United States, Asia and Africa. The government is now set to further tighten immigration rules with an Australian-style system for restricting immigration to those with skills the country needs.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said this new point system would help manage the immigration flow.
“This is probably the biggest change in our immigration rules that has been seen for many decades,” he said. “It is precisely to encourage the skills that we need as a country and to discourage the skills we don’t need.”
And so the debate goes on. How many migrants should be allowed in, how long should they stay, do they benefit the economy or do they take jobs away from locals?
Hugo Brady with the Center for European Reform says there is another factor.
“People will always fear the ‘other’ and they don’t like the idea of strangers descending on them even if it is a good thing, even if they themselves have benefited from it,” he added. “Somehow this prejudice remains.”
For the migrants who come here, the priority is to make a better life for themselves and their families. Some plan to return home, others are not so sure.
For Britons, the issue remains an ongoing debate.

33% Afraid of Clinton in New Poll
Posted in wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Clinton, hillary on December 21st, 2007 by Stanford Matthews
It wasn’t that long ago that the DNC made a big deal about conservatives not being able to choose a candidate. The details of their purely political statements are fading now with the only recollection that they viewed a large % of undecided GOP voters to mean there were no candidates to excite the electorate. It was stupid then and it is stupid now.
But another report on the latest polls offers some political humor, some ‘I told ya so’ and indications not constructed on this blog for which there is a shared sentiment. First of all, the report announces 37% of likely Democratic voters still have no idea for whom they’ll cast a vote. If 2 out of 5 Dems still don’t know who they will pick for President, why are so many expecting Senator ‘did nothing, do nothing but fail’ Clinton will win the lefty nomination? If all the polls are of likely voters, how does 37% undecided, 40% for Clinton and maybe 35% between Obama and Edwards equal 100?
If you think about the recent surge for Huckabee, or any other significant ’stories’ in the campaign, it is reasonable to expect that there are probably as many people who have not decided who to vote for as there are those convinced they have made their selection. This blog and the person doing the typing for this post announced support for Mitt Romney last June or earlier. There are others known here who have selected Fred Thompson and maintained that position since well before his announcement or even forming a committee.
While the DNC made light of things early in the campaign, they probably are not laughing off the mere 35% of likely Dems voters saying they’re excited about HRC for President. The DNC may have been avoiding the obvious conclusion that the GOP had more to offer and the campaign season started early so people had plenty of time to make up their minds with a wide field of reasonable choices to attract a variety of conservative preferences.
Huckabee and Romney still show as tied in Iowa. But for the Dems, Clinton is fading while Obama and Edwards are holding their own. Giuliani playing for the big states and Clinton losing her lead means Iowa will likely fall to candidates not leading the national polls. Clinton and Giuliani are also not leading in New Hampshire. That leaves lots of room for everyone else and may change the whole ball game after the first few states are finished voting.
It was fun displaying results here earlier of a Zogby poll that raised some reader complaints. It was an internet poll under uncommon conditions and the referenced report today from Zogby may be unique also. It features Obama and Huck ’surging’ nationally. Ya, whatever. Point is, little is being said about Clinton in terms of leading. Most Clinton support continues to recycle old news.
