DNC: Is it over yet?
Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Democrats, News Media, Clinton, obama, Opinion on August 27th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews
On the day after Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered her end of the Obama appeasement arrangement in the guise of a support Obama speech at the Democratic party convention is Denver, just the titles of some reports on that and similar topics provide some comic relief in this political season. That one suggests Clinton urges unity in tightening race emphacizes no suspension of disbelief required in other works of fiction. It is more believable that Hillary Rodham Clinton would adopt one version of PUMA’s acronym description; either People United Means Action or Party Unity My Ass……you decide (wink, wink).
Eighteen million votes and you have to wonder how HRC did not end up on the ticket. It demonstrates how much animosity has developed within the Democratic Party over the years. By comparison the voting public offered a luke warm if not coldly indifferent attitude toward Senator Joe Biden in the primaries yet he becomes this tickets number two. How’s that for a slap in the face to the party’s second place finisher?
As for the title of another report, to suggest that Barack Obama has a challenge to clarify his message is a bit ahead of the game. One must have a message before a need to clarify it exists. The audacity of hope, the world there is and the one that should be as well as I ask you to believe is marketing not a message for a political campaign or evidence of one’s qualifications to be President. Joe Biden’s tendency for plagiarism compliments Barack Obama’s use of Deval Patrick’s words and suggests the message of their campaign is listen to us we have no original thoughts but like to use everyone else’s.
There should be no wondering why ‘He Didn’t Pick Hillary’ with all the bad blood their is between the Obama and Clinton clans. And in the evening following Hillary Rodham Clinton’s speech at the convention, Bill is now expected to tow the party line and add his two cents on Obama’s behalf. It should also be the day a roll call vote ‘honors’ the campaign of HRC as the 2nd place contender for the Democratic Party nomination for President. The anticipation of calamity between the warring factions in the D party at the convention has not materialized. The last chance would be the floor vote about which there has been continuous speculation. As the HRC speech disappointed it is likely the floor vote, present or not, will follow suit.
Other report titles like: ‘It’s Time to Put Aside Hurt Feelings’ or ‘Obama Needs More Than Change’ or ‘High Anxiety in the Mile-High City’ only serve to repeat the sensationalism distributed throughout the MSM leading up to the convention. The lackluster performance of the D party’s convention have disappointed both in terms of providing the media with outrageous spectacles or the opposing political spectrum with satisfying evidence of a pre-election implosion of the other party and its candidates. But there is still time for that.
With only Bill and Joe and, okay, Barack remaining as the headliners for the rest of the D convention it is really already over or it may have been before it started as the anticipation regardless of the expectation exceeded the reality. Nothing to get excited about before, during and probably after the door’s close. And the door that may be closing for the Democrats leads to the White House later this year.

Nearly 600 Arrested in US Immigration Raid
Posted in Terrorism, wordpress, Immigration, Tancredo, United States, Law, Justice, Safety, Border Control, ICE on August 27th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews
27 August 2008
U.S. immigration agents have arrested nearly 600 people at a plant in the southern state of Mississippi in the single largest workplace enforcement raid in the nation’s history.
Officials with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) say agents arrested illegal immigrants, including suspects from Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Honduras, Brazil and Germany.
The raid took place Monday at a Howard Industries plant, a facility that manufactures electronic transformers, in Laurel.
Some 475 were transferred to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Jena, in neighboring Louisiana. At least 100 others, including caregivers and juveniles, were released for what authorities described as humanitarian reasons.
Immigration officials say the raid is part of an ongoing nationwide effort to shut down places of employment that hire illegal immigrants.
An estimated 12 million people are living in the United States illegally.
Immigration has been a divisive issue in the U.S. presidential campaign. Both Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama are actively courting Latino voters, who are expected to play a pivotal role in the November election.
Several battleground states have significant Latino populations, including Florida, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico.

Review of Michelle Obama’s Convention Speech
Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Democrats, News Media, obama, Opinion, David Brooks, Mark Shields on August 27th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews
As the second in a series of reviews on speeches given at the Democratic party convention still stuck on the well-known and overused mantra of hope and change, Michelle Obama’s speech earlier this week was graded by Michelle Obama as ’solid’ and by Shields and Brooks on PBS coverage as a typical convention speech but missing the needed material to make the case for her husband.
In following the sentiment of Shields and Brooks, Michelle Obama appeared to be trying to paint the couple as ordinary Americans who share a history with those who struggle, another Dems mainstay, and avoid the criticism that they are elitists. The speech says little or nothing on how Barack Obama would achieve results for the lofty vague goals alluded to in the eloquent messages on the stump which are his primary claim to fame. As the video featuring Hillary Clinton elsewhere on this blog suggests, his resume’ is a ’speech he gave in 2002′ and Michelle did nothing to change that impression.
To Michelle Obama’s credit, and if the bio is accurate, with a modest beginning was able to successfully complete work at Princeton and Harvard Law and have successful careers at a law firm concentrating on marketing and intellectual property, as an intern with the controversial Mayor Daly of Chicago in planning and development, starting a public service organization and then became Associate Dean of Students at the University of Chicago. This seems to bear out her claim that she and her husband have chosen community service as how they make their livings. Which by all accounts have been lucrative. How does one earn a substantial income working in community service? That may be where the elitist label is generated.
Michelle Obama gives credit to her brother in the speech for ‘watching over her’ and helping her be successful. If her success is largely due to support and inspiration from family, why is she promoting the idea that her husband as President and in concert with the Democratic Party can do that for you. Why not simply reinforce the idea that we are responsible for our own outcomes and through supportive families we can be successful? Why does she claim that the way for people to rise up from whatever struggles have been placed upon them by the society they live in can be solved by her husband as President and the Democratic Party as if their is no requirement on the part of individuals to participate in their own success. As if to say, let us do it for you. You are struggling and it is because of others. We’ll take care of you. We have experience in community service. We will make everything right for you. We’re not rich. We’re just like you. We became successful and we can get you what you deserve.
Michelle Obama recounts her husband’s description of the ‘world as it is’ and the ‘world as it should be’. Barack Obama has nothing if not the gift of rhetoric and the ability to deliver it in speeches. Perhaps ‘just words’ was an unfair criticism but just speeches was a criticism, as mentioned earlier, echoes the sentiment of Shields and Brooks on PBS during the convention coverage that portrayed the speech of Michelle and some of Barack’s campaign events as pleasant stuff that lacked specifics on how the job of running this country would go if Barack Obama was elected. For two people with adequate education, you might think they could offer a
little more substance and get the nod from the afforementioned commentators as well as a larger segment of the population that not only appreciate a flare for spectacular presentation but eventually ask, where’s the beef? Where are the specifics and what have you accomplished to qualify you to be President?
That would be the lingering question which Michelle Obama’s speech did nothing to resolve. The party conventions are probably the most significant opportunity and responsibility for getting that message out. What message? The one they have not adequately presented thur far. What it is that qualifies Barack Obama to be President of the United States. No one seems to know if the Democratic campaign is any indication.

Review of Caroline Kennedy’s Remarks on Obama
Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Democrats, liberal, Kennedy, obama, Opinion on August 27th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews
There will be a few posts on the speeches given at the Democratic Party Convention in Denver this year. Starting with remarks prepared for delivery by Caroline Kennedy. As I watched the events of November 1963 in which it has been echoed many times that we all remember where we were that day, being a child myself, the images of Caroline and John John are vividly stored in my memory. As I remember the title, ‘Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye’, it makes me think of the loss of my own father some years before 1963 as I did not know my father well either.
With the passing of John Jr I had some time to return to the thoughts generated by all those memories. There was much more and I always felt one family should not be burdened with so much grief. The contrast between Camelot and the tragic events over many years had me thinking that I hoped that little girl I saw on the television had a good and private life if that was her plan. And only now has she emerged on the public stage.
While this may be a critical review of her prepared remarks, I certainly intend no harm or unfair criticism of Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.
The comparison of Barack Obama to John F Kennedy and her statement that there is a shared commitment between them on ‘the timeless American ideals of justice and fairness, service and sacrifice, faith and family’ falls flat on this blog. The most obvious parallel between JFK and the Presidential candidates of 2008 is the military service of the former President and Senator John McCain. JFK’s famous heroism of PT109 fame and John McCain’s service in the Viet Nam War and being subjected to the fate of a POW for six years as well as the comparative family histories of service to country are stunning. Barack Obama does not share in this dedication to service and sacrifice.
While some may be troubled by repeated mention of a connection between Barack Obama and Bill Ayers the facts speak for themselves. And ideals of justice and fairness suggest that Obama admit the relationship exists and also that it was an absolutely extreme error in judgment when the standard should be to avoid even the appearance of impropriety if seeking public office. The same can be said about a shady real estate deal with convicted felon Rezko. Are the Dems so lame they could not vet ‘the Chosen One’ and reject his candidacy on those facts alone? It’s like Clinton all over again with Whitewater and all the other ‘gates’. Will more similar acts follow if this man makes it to the White House?
If this is how it works what else is out there we cannot see? For that matter, it is not like Ted Kennedy is without baggage either. The Dems cry foul about President Bush and the GOP in general. They are not perfect either but to hold your political opponents to a higher standard than yourselves seems to be the left’s SOP. Ethics violations and worse are in evidence on both sides of the aisle but to lift Barack Obama toward sainthood during a political campaign is more than a bit much.
Caroline, my apologies if this post that you will likely never read offends you. That was not my intent. But if you agree to enter the fray don’t be surprised if your clothes get muddied. Barack Obama is not the person you describe. Be careful what you drink. The Kook-Aid is not recommended.

Bill Faults Press for Obama “Fairy Tale”

Posted in Money Matters, Technology, wordpress, disclosure, ethics, telecom, Apple on August 27th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews
When the iPhone first came out this blog dubbed it the ‘i’ in iPhone is for idiot. There is no problem with adding all sorts of bells and whistles to a device with some core functionality that provides utility for the user. And since caveat emptor is still a mainstay in successful transactions in the world of capitalism, overblown claims and slick marketing promotions are not foul either. One must do their due diligence before making purchases or suffer the consequences. That is the main reason for the idiot distinction.
The secondary reason for the idiot stigma is really about telecom in general. The evolution of telecom post deregulation was a bust for the consumer and still is. What helps the manufacturers of telecom devices is the younger the buyer the better. No dissin’ of the younger folks here. It is simply they are unaware that even in the days of Ma Bell aka AT&T in years before their time, acquiring the basic idea of voice communication of state of the art quality and reasonable price was uncommon or unavailable. Deregulation and more competition was claimed to be the bonus for the public. Ya, right. You still cannot get reliable voice transmission at a reasonable price. But you can get a camera built into the device as well as text messaging and a myriad of features that are quite useless if the primary purpose of, for instance wireless phones, is to have mobile voice communications that are always there at sufficient quality and affordable.
Hence the offering of this report found on Slate:
The iPhone still sux. But that does not mean Apple is the only culprit. They are just one of the usual suspects. Every vendor out there sells basically the same thing and the primary functional utility and price are being overlooked by the consumer. As if the mfr’s could hear the typical customer saying, ‘ I just buy what’s out there, man, it’s cool’. No, it certainly is not.

Russian President Medvedev Exclusive Video Interview

Russia Recognizes Independence of Breakaway Georgian Republics

Fedynsky report - Listen (MP3)
Russian President Dmitri Medvedev has signed decrees granting formal recognition to the Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. But VOA Moscow correspondent Peter Fedynsky reports analysts say the move could promote separatism in Russia itself.
President Medvedev announced Russian recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in a five-minute nationally-televised address, in which he accused Georgia of an attempted blitzkrieg aimed at eliminating the people of the breakaway republics.
The Kremlin leader says he has signed decrees regarding the Russian Federation’s recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. He says Russia calls on other states to follow his country’s example. Mr. Medvedev says the decision is not easy, but it offers the only possibility to save people’s lives.
He says recognition is based on the desire of the Ossetian and Abkhaz peoples for independence, as well as United Nations Charter, a 1970 declaration on international law, and the Helsinki Agreement.
Independent Russian political analyst Alexander Konovalov told VOA the decision weakens the Helsinki Agreement, a document that has recognized the inviolability of Europe’s post-War boundaries since it was signed in 1975. Konovalov says this will hurt Russia itself, because Moscow will no longer be able to oppose U.S. and Western recognition of Kosovo, a province that broke lose of Serbia, a Russian ally.
![]() |
The analyst says even more importantly for Russia, recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia plants a time bomb in the Caucasus, because if Moscow acknowledges the right of Ossetians and Abkhaz to secede from Georgia, why can’t the Ingush and Chechens leave Russia? He says he does not know how or when the time bomb will go off, but he is certain that it will.
Chechens fought two very bloody wars of independence with Russia in recent years, which ended only after one of the warring clans turned their guns against other Chechens to side with the Russians who put them in charge of the restive region. Chechens have been fighting Russian rule since the 19th century and the area is still considered a hot bed of independence.
The chairman of the European Integration Forum in Tbilisi, Soso Tsiskarishvili, told VOA that Mr. Medvedev’s decision is likely to raise ethnic awareness and stoke separatism throughout Russia. He says Mr. Medvedev’s decision to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia demonstrates that he is a short-sighted leader, who was selected, not elected, and cannot be trusted to honor Russia’s solemn international commitments. Tsiskarishvili is also critical of Georgian leadership, saying it runs the risk of losing domestic political support.
Tsiskarishvili says he is not convinced there is sufficient confidence among the people of Georgia in the ability of current authorities to control the situation in the long run, or that they will be able to remain real players on Georgia’s political scene.
Tsiskarishvili says that if any Georgian leader still harbors ideas of continued fighting over South Ossetia, it will mean the loss of virtually any possibility of maintaining the country’s territorial integrity.

Dems Head to the Kook-Aid Trough
Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Biden, Democrats, liberal, News Media, Kennedy, Clinton, obama, kerry, David Brooks, Pelosi on August 26th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews
For weeks now and to the opening of the Dems convention the talk has been ‘party unity’. With groups like PUMA and the modified words of the acronym, party unity my ass, does it seem unity is not a guarantee? Obama having to appease the Clinton clan speaks volumes of how little unity there is. The same two who pounded each other in the primaries are now making nice for the cameras. For Clinton to say we WERE NOT all on the same side but we ARE now is ridiculous. Obama is trying to save his campaign with this dribble and Clinton is trying to keep her options open four years in the future. For Clinton, the odd thing is four years only works if Obama loses in November. Otherwise it is possible, but unlikely, that she would have to wait for two terms of Obama and perhaps one of Biden. Appeasement for Obama no matter how dispicable may win him a shot at, in his words, ‘that White House’. As another report suggests, this convention is all about selling the Obama brand. For Obama the key phrase should be let’s put some lipstick on this pig. Hire a few used car salesman for the hard sell. But then there is no need, they already have Obama and perhaps half of the Dems have begun drinking the Kook Aid.

Democrats Stress Unity as Convention Opens
By Shailagh Murray
Washington Post Staff Writer
It’s madness. Its madness I tell ya. A view from the PBS coverage tonite included a woman listening after Carter spoke via whatever and Obama’s half-sister was speaking. She was already teary-eyed. Then there was one who looked stunned or confused or just plain not happy. One could guess the first already drank some Kook-Aid and the other hand not. Apparently one Obama supporter and one for Clinton. Two different kinds of Kook-Aid are being offered.
Democrats Kick Off Convention Madness
Here it is again. ‘Healing rifts’ of a ‘bruising primary season’. Gee Wally, imagine that, the piece above suggests that this week the Dems are concerned that the roll call vote Clinton brokered with Obama might disrupt their HOPE for party unity. Are these people for real or what?
While observing some of the coverage by PBS of the Dems convention this evening some points are reinforced. To go further than David Brooks opinion of Pelosi’s speech that she basically said Obama is a Democrat and that is good so vote for a Democrat, she mentioned again that nagging failed agenda of a New Direction for America which they may have unveiled for the 2006 midterms and nothing has happened since. She also credited Obama with the toughest ethics legislation in decades, another falsehood. Then Jimmy Carter helped them point to their manufactured victims. Then his half-sister said Barack helped her follow her dreams and would do the same for you. If that is the case, why couldn’t she follow her dreams independently? Did she need Barack to do that? Here we go again. The Dems can do nothing but repeat their tired old mantra of hope and change. Because that is all they have to offer. Hope and change that never provides solutions. They were victorious in the 2006 elections and nothing has come of it yet. Now they want you to give them the White House and nothing would come of that except extending the political future of do nothings.
But hey, how about that party unity?
Clinton and New York Democrats Stress Unity
At a meeting of the New York delegation here, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton implored the state’s Democrats to work as hard to elect Senator Barack Obama as they worked for her.
We were not all on the same side as Democrats, but we are now,’’ Senator Clinton said.
In her 9-minute speech, Mrs. Clinton used the word unity at least a half dozen times.
All over the press lately is the chant of party unity or the concern over it from the obviously left leaning MSM. They were pounded about it so much since Obama entered the campaign, you may occasionally find a piece that is not flattering to Obama. But that is just a little misdirection provided by the MSM to dissuade you from noticing their bias. Listen to Hillary. We are united. Is it her Democratic party ‘hope’ that if you throw enough of it at the wall some will stick? Or is she just playing a role to look like the good soldier while behind the scenes she is working deals for herself? Maybe she wants to deflect suggestions of guilt when the rabid Clintonistas disrupt the convention. If the party goes back on the floor vote arrangement Denver will need those 1500 police and then some.
Don’t be shocked if a high percentage of independents and even Democrats vote for John McCain. Obama should lose much of the women’s vote without Clinton and the ad from McCain on the story above may begin to convince more women that the GOP is a better choice for them. It is for most people. It is just a simple matter of them not figuring that out yet. GOP perfect? Not even close. But they are far and away better than the left choice. As it works out on two acounts, they are the right choice.
Poll gives Democrats reasons for hope, concern
By Paul Steinhauser
CNN Deputy Political Director
DENVER, Colorado (CNN) — A new national poll has a mixed message for Democrats as their national convention gets under way Monday in Denver.
The public may be more intelligent than the credit some give. Understanding the fallacy in the Dems only argument against McCain can provide some optimism that the entire nation is not drinking the Dems Kook Aid. But the funny thing here is the Dems believing some of their own propaganda….’reasons for hope’. You know, like the fact they are always waiting for some Messiah to lead them out of the wilderness. Along comes Barack Obama. Go figure. They took the bait.

postscript: Just as this post was being finished Ted Kennedy was shown on PBS giving his speech. It would appear Senator Kennedy is in charge of distributing the Kook-Aid. And based on the post-speech commentary by Shields and Brooks, Obama is real tight with Kennedy. Sounds eerily familiar, right John Kerry?
