fusion
Critics say it’s unnecessary and costly. Perfect. Some worry about nukes. Perfect. It could lead to solving the world’s energy problems. Perfect. The Sun is an example of fusion. The Sun is a star. There are lots of stars. They operate for a long time with no utility bill or stoppin’ at the pump. Nature. Perfect. How humans operate within it….. not so perfect.

Maybe those who oppose such things could withhold their criticism long enough to allow the seeds of innovation to grow. So many seem to want things to be perfect but are reluctant to let perfect happen. Perfect.

New Super Laser Burns Like the Sun

30 May 2009

The world’s strongest laser - powerful enough to create conditions as hot as inside the Sun - was unveiled Friday in the western U.S. state of California for an audience of politicians and scientists.

The stadium-sized National Ignition Facility actually houses 192 lasers that all point towards a tiny blob of hydrogen.

When the lasers shoot, scientists expect the hydrogen will fuse into helium, a chemical reaction like what makes stars burn and nuclear bombs explode.

The project began in 1997 and cost the federal government an estimated $3.5 billion. The government says it will allow scientists to study in a lab what happens in a nuclear explosion. They say it will help scientists assess the safety of the aging U.S. nuclear arsenal.

But critics say the laser is unnecessary and costly. Some also worry it could help develop new nuclear weapons.

Proponents of the giant laser say there is another possible benefit. They say they hope to create a fusion reaction called “fusion ignition.” This reaction could create huge amounts of electricity.

Scientists suggest such reactions could lead to a new green energy source, and eliminate the current dependence on fossil fuels.

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger hailed the laser as a breakthrough for his state. The unveiling was attended by around 3,500 people.

Scientists say they plan to begin experimenting with fusion ignition by next year.

Shamnesty to Rear Its Ugly Head Later This Year

As early as June 8, 2009 a formal restart of the shamnesty movement will occur in the Obama White House. At least one report confirms what most of us already knew. Shamnesty will once again be the top issue in Washington later in 2009. But you had better get your opposition strategy activated long before then as it may only be a matter of 60 liberal votes along with any mindless RINOs that decides the issue if pressure is not applied starting now. 2010 is not far off and we all know politicians like only one thing better than getting elected. That is getting re-elected. And a vote for shamnesty is just one more reason to throw the bums out.

Immigration reform could emerge again in the fall
By Steve Stoddard and J. Taylor Rushing

Senate Democrats may be close to 60 votes on a measure that would represent the first step towards immigration reform under President Obama.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act is a concept dear to Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin’s (D-Ill.) heart, and while health care reform may get this summer’s headlines in Washington, the DREAM Act may be a sleeper.

illegal immigrationThe Dream Act has been around for a while and like the shamnesty defeat in the summer of 2007 it has been shot down once. Together with yes votes on bailouts any member of Congress voting for shamnesty risks defeat in 2010 unless they are secure in a liberal saturated district willing to open all borders and ignore the rule of law.

All the Dream Act does is give illegals one more reason to violate the law and enter this country without lawfully engaging the process. Rather than offer an unnecessary carrot to break the law, Congress should encourage and assist the executive branch or law enforcement with the stick they need to eliminate illegal immigration. This is not a call to abolish immigration but illegal immigration. There is a big difference. But liberals for open borders and unregulated immigration prefer to label those opposed to illegal immigration as xenophobic. Yes, there is no shortage of liberal labels to muddy the water on issues.

So far it is no surprise that Arlen Specter, RINO extraordinaire and now GOP defector, will support whatever the Democrats propose. Other notable RINO looking Senators are Lugar, Lott and Wicker.

It will be tougher this time than the last to defeat shamnesty. But that is not reason for concern but increased effort and attitude.

Mixed Messages from US on North Korea?

Posted in Terrorism, war, wordpress, Politics, Pakistan, North Korea, Nuke, U.N., India, Iran, Foreign Affairs, Military on May 29th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to analyze the issue of nukes, North Korea and their ability to deliver them or cause other world powers to look impotent. As is the case with most international conflict there is plenty of blame to go around. You can criticize the current and former US Presidential administrations for appearing inept or acting that way. But it is equally fair to distribute criticism to all concerned. That would be the handful of countries engaged or not at one time or another in direct talks with North Korea on the issue of nuclear intentions not so different from that of Iran. It also includes the do nothing approach of the United Nations and members all.

Along with more than several countries in Africa, Iran, North Korea and examples from nearly every continent have presented problems international in scope that major powers and the UN have dropped the ball on numerous times. And then a couple of news reports of the last couple of days emphasize the fiasco that is the response to North Korean nukes.

The United States stressed its resolve to defend allies Japan and South Korea Wednesday, as it dismissed North Korea’s latest threats as “saber rattling” and “bluster.”

That is part of a report from the 27th you can read by clicking on the linked text. But the quoted dismissal of saber rattling and bluster is contradicted by the following story from the 28th.

South Korea and the United States have raised their defense alert levels on the Korean peninsula, a day after the North said it was willing to discard the 56-year old armistice that paused the Korean War. Analysts expect more tension in the days ahead.

This is a perfectly fine example of what is wrong with the relationships and operating performance among friendly and not so friendly countries around this frail planet. From time to time when some of the world’s children continuously demonstrate an inability to play well with others (even given the sad state of affairs in world politics) the rest of the children should be able to agree on an effective remedy to the situation.

When the safety of all concerned can be threatened by a few how much intelligence does it require to negotiate an arrangement that will end the stupidity? The tired old excuses that these matters are more complex than the ordinary citizen understands simply don’t hold water. If it is a matter of waiting to see who blinks first let this ordinary citizen be the first to inform you, that already happened. Now get on with it and solve the problem.

Wanted: Public Opposition to HR 1024 and S 424

Posted in Terrorism, wordpress, Immigration, Tancredo, liberal, United States, Law, Justice, Border Control, Legislation, Blogs4Borders on May 28th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

Conservative Thoughts

If there is anyone out there who believes the Democratic party is concerned about the rule of law, secure borders or illegal immigration the introduction of HR 1024 in the US House of Representatives and S 424 in the US Senate and the hearing scheduled below demonstrates what is important to them. The top priority for Democrats, aka liberals, this year on the issue of immigration is adding the terms or phrase ‘permanent partner(s)’ to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act.

The Senate hearing is being held by the Committee on the Judiciary and it just so happens the Chairman is Senator Patrick Leahy who is also the sponsor of the Senate bill S. 424. There are 17 co-sponsors of the bill and with the exception of Sanders (officially an independent), also from Vermont like Leahy, the remainder are all Democrats.

The House bill, HR 1024 is sponsored by Democratic party Congressman Jerrold Nadler of the NY 8th and co-sponsored by 102 Democrats.

As stated earlier the liberal priorities on secure borders, illegal immigration, the rule of law and national security overall are demonstrated by their published agenda. They have learned nothing from past history and if allowed to continue without at least strong objection from the public will be free to further damage national security and defense as well as adding to the crippling economic effects of unrestrained illegal immigration.

This post is simply a call to all citizens to express your opinion to your elected representatives in the strongest terms. Pursuing such policy and legislation for political purposes while ignoring the very real risks to this nation is at best foolish and at worst, criminal. As much as conservative principles fall on deaf liberal ears the awakening to the sensible action it advocates may come too late without sufficient public outrage. The opposition party known as the GOP has weakened their position to a point where public pressure is all that stands between a strong United States and further weakened world power awash with liberal dreams. Take a stand, put pressure on those in Washington to do the right thing. Eliminate these bills or at least put them on the back burner until the borders are secure, illegal immigration is eliminated and national security and defense are again second to none.

tobacco BarryAlthough the report below can be characterized as disappointing is it really a surprise or shock? You don’t really believe most campaign promises do you? And when is the last time a politician told you there would be transparency, open government, oversight, accountability, disclosure or ethics in government that actually came to pass? (the next story while expected is of more consequence)

Obama ducks promise to delay bill signings

It seemed among the easiest of his transparency pledges and is entirely under his control, but President Obama is finagling his promise to post bills on the White House Web site for comment for five days before he signs them.

Given the most recent example of a SCOTUS nominee who did not perform as predicted as in David Souter does it really matter who is chosen? But it is certain that if a white male SCOTUS nominee were to say ‘ I would hope that a wise white American male with the richness of his experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a Latina woman who hasn’t lived that life’ the screams of racist or biggot or xenophobe would be heard clear into the next century. You know what you can do with the race card or diversity appeal which is nothing more than a political tactic used against those worried about being labeled racist or xenophobic. That worry doesn’t live on this blog.

As for Sotomayor being nominated by Obama and once claiming she will more often than not reach a better conclusion than her white male counterpart….. in this case that is Latina-speak for the decisions I make will favor those I favor. How’s that for reverse discrimination?

Barack Obama nominates Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court

justice is blindEven before news of her nomination emerged, conservatives had highlighted a statement by her that the Court of Appeal was “where policy is made” – an indication she would see her role as being much more than strict interpretation of the constitution, which conservatives insist on.

A racially-charged statement in which she argued that her minority status made her more effective than white male colleagues was also being highlighted by conservatives.

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” she said in a lecture at the University of California in 2001.

And as for the leaders of the US Senate who will take up the nomination of Sotomayor…..

Reid Statement On President Obama’s Nomination Of Sonia Sotomayor To Supreme Court

Harry Reid
Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today after President Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court seat soon to be vacated by Justice David Souter:

“As Majority Leader, I will do all I can to ensure Judge Sonia Sotomayor receives a fair and respectful hearing and the Senate’s quick confirmation.

“I commend the President for selecting such an accomplished, qualified and experienced nominee to replace Justice Souter on the Supreme Court. Judge Sotomayor has had wide-ranging experience not only in the legal world, but in the real world as well, which has helped to ensure that her understanding of the law is grounded not only in theory, but also in practice.

“Both Democratic and Republican Presidents have nominated Judge Sotomayor to the federal bench, and the Senate has confirmed her with strong bipartisan support in the past. I look forward to working with both Democrats and Republicans on the Judiciary Committee to confirm Judge Sotomayor as the first Hispanic and the third woman to sit on the Court.

“Justice Souter has been a friend of mine for a long time and powerful defender of our constitutional rights. Americans everywhere again thank him for his decades of service to the nation.”

McConnell Statement on Judge Sonia Sotomayor

McConnellWASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Tuesday regarding the President’s announcement of his intent to nominate Judge Sonia Sotomayor to fill the upcoming vacancy on the Supreme Court:

“Senate Republicans will treat Judge Sotomayor fairly. But we will thoroughly examine her record to ensure she understands that the role of a jurist in our democracy is to apply the law even-handedly, despite their own feelings or personal or political preferences.

“Our Democratic colleagues have often remarked that the Senate is not a ‘rubber stamp.’ Accordingly, we trust they will ensure there is adequate time to prepare for this nomination, and a full and fair opportunity to question the nominee and debate her qualifications.”

.
.

It is fair to say that Dems will vote for Obama’s pick and Republicans will not. But then it is never quite that predictable is it? So to defeat the Obama pick the GOP will need ‘no’ votes from across the aisle. One might expect that won’t happen. And what value is a filibuster worth?

House Resolution to Investigate Pelosi

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, disclosure, ethics, oversight, Law, Justice, Pelosi, Congress, Legislation on May 27th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

where's the justice?WASHINGTON D.C. — Utah Rep. Rob Bishop is at the center of the call for an investigation into Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Bishop says an investigation is the only way to get to the truth of the whole Pelosi-CIA issue. He sponsored a resolution to set up a special committee. The House voted down whether to consider that resolution on a 252-172 vote Thursday.
Funny how minority party requests for investigation of allegations made by the majority party’s Speaker of the House are called ‘distractions’ by the opposition but the majority party’s similar requests for investigation of minority party members is characterized as noble.
Congressman Steny Hoyer, D-Md., called the move by republicans an attempt to misdirect the American people.

“The Republican Party has been pursuing a policy of distraction,” he said. “It does not serve our country to have the kind of politics practiced that we saw today on the floor of the House.”
Below is the resolution sought by Rep Rob Bishop to investigate Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. At the time of this post, the resolution but not the roll call vote was available on the House website.

111th CONGRESS
1st Session
H. RES. 470

Raising a question of the privileges of the House.
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
May 21, 2009

Mr. BISHOP of Utah submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Rules

RESOLUTION

Raising a question of the privileges of the House.

Whereas the Honorable Nancy Pelosi, a Representative from California, served from 1997 to 2002 as Ranking Democratic Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence;

Whereas Representative Pelosi currently serves as Speaker of the House, a position of considerable power and influence within the Congress;

Whereas title 3 of the United States Code designates the Speaker of the House as third in line of succession to the Presidency;

Whereas Speaker Pelosi has publicly challenged the truthfulness of what she and other congressional leaders were told by Central Intelligence Agency officials about the agency’s use of enhanced interrogation techniques on suspected terrorists;

Whereas in an MSNBC interview on February 25, 2009, Speaker Pelosi stated, `I can say flat-out, they never told us that these enhanced interrogation techniques were being used’;

Whereas Speaker Pelosi’s public statements allege a sustained pattern of deception by government intelligence officers charged by law with informing Congress about the agency’s activities;

Whereas when asked at a press conference on May 15, 2009, widely reported by the news media, `Madame Speaker, just to be clear, you’re accusing the CIA of lying to you in September?’ Speaker Pelosi stated, `Yes’;

Whereas during the same press conference the Speaker subsequently stated, `So yes, I’m saying they are misleading, the CIA was misleading the Congress’ and further, `they mislead us all the time’ and `they misrepresented every step of the way’;

Whereas in a memorandum to CIA employees released publicly on May 15, 2009, Leon Panetta, the CIA Director, stated, `It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress. That is against our laws and our values. As the Agency indicated previously in response to Congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing the enhanced interrogation techniques that had been employed’;

Whereas national and international media reports on this controversy have damaged the reputation of the House by raising questions about whether the effectiveness of congressional oversight may have been undermined through false or misleading statements by intelligence officials; and

Whereas in order to safeguard the reputation of the House it is imperative to reconcile as soon as possible the aforementioned contradictory statements by Speaker Pelosi and CIA Director Panetta: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That–

(1) a Select Subcommittee of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence shall be established to review and verify the accuracy of the Speaker’s aforementioned public statements;

(2) the Select Subcommittee shall be comprised of four members of the full committee, two appointed by the chairman of the committee and two by its ranking minority member;

(3) The subcommittee shall have the same powers to obtain testimony and documents pursuant to subpoena authorized under clause 2(m) of rule XI of the Rules of the House; and

(4) the Select Subcommittee report its findings and recommendations to the House not later than sixty calendar days after adoption of this resolution.

Submit Your Request to the Office of Congressional Ethics

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, Democrats, disclosure, ethics, oversight, Law, Justice, obama, Pelosi, Congress, Legislation on May 26th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

A little public service announcement from Blog @ MoreWhat.com is offered via this post. Most of you are probably aware that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has been at the center of a controversy that initially focused on the longstanding debate over EIT or enhanced interrogation techniques and other more highly charged descriptions like ‘torture’ or the most referenced technique in the news known as ‘waterboarding.’ Those on one side of the debate characterize their position as one of moral high ground which only seeks to defend the US from terrorism based on what have long been our guiding principles and values that do not allow torture. Their opponents submit this is a thinly veiled attempt to engage in a political witch hunt shielded by lofty rhetoric designed to give the appearance that it is merely a search for justice.

Recently on the subject of waterboarding it was disclosed in the news that there are members of the armed forces and others who are subjected to waterboarding as part of their training. It was also reported that Col Oliver North is one who disclosed that he was waterboarded during his training. The obvious purpose of the training would be to prepare one for the circumstance that if captured they would be exposed to such methods by their captors. The point of mentioning this should be obvious. For all the noise made about EIT, specifically waterboarding, it would appear those in the ‘business’ are quite familiar with its widespread use and the likely probability they would experience it if captured by the enemy.

PelosiSpeaker Pelosi has made claims the CIA lied to her or mislead her in briefings she attended as far back as 2002. A common opinion on the entire matter suggests Pelosi had a bit of a meltdown on realizing that her party’s intent to prosecute individuals who used EIT may cause her problems if it were learned that she did not oppose the use of EIT based on prior knowledge from briefings and the like or worse that she approved of them in the past.

Those on the other side of the debate gave Speaker Pelosi an easy out after her claims against the CIA. Simply provide proof of your allegations or present a public apology to the CIA and the matter will go away. Simply put she declined the escape route and holds to her original argument. When a call for an ethics investigation of Pelosi was defeated by her party, the Democrats, it begs the question of how serious the Dems really are on matters of ethics.

Nancy Pelosi is well known for her statements calling the previous majority of the GOP and the former Bush Administration the ‘culture of corruption.’ She has lauded her own party and herself as the New Direction for America and champions of ethics since the 2006 midterms. As recently as the first quarter of 2008 Speaker Pelosi has proclaimed herself and her party as leaders in ethics. The only noticeable result has been the addition of the Office of Congressional Ethics. With the information provided in the remainder of this post, readers are invited to take Pelosi up on her claim that the public is invited to participate in this process. Information and links are provided to get you started including press releases, legislation and the OCE.

Speaker Pelosi’s press release related to the OCE legislation:

Pelosi Statement on House Passage of Major Ethics Reform

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke on the House floor tonight in support of a landmark ethics reform bill establishing an outside, independent Office of Congressional Ethics. The resolution passed by a vote of 229 to 182. Below are the Speaker’s remarks, as prepared:

“Mr. Speaker, today, the New Direction Congress takes another step forward in ethics reform by making Congress more open and more accountable to the American people. By doing so, we continue to strengthen Americans’ faith in the institution of Congress.

“Since the Ethics Committee was first constituted in 1967, the House has set increasingly higher standards of conduct to guide Members because public office is a public trust.

“Just last year, on the first day of the New Direction Congress, the House implemented new and sweeping changes to the gift and travel restrictions.
some new direction
“Last September, we also passed the historic Honest Leadership and Open Government Act—historic lobby reform that is now the law of the land.

“Today, the New Direction Congress will—for the first time—open the ethics process up to the participation of our fellow citizens, which will make this institution more accountable to the American people. I welcome their assistance.

“I commend Mr. Capuano and all of the Members of the Task Force for their service to the House. Congressman Capuano led this effort in a way that was bipartisan and sensitive to this institution’s history and traditions. The resulting legislation will greatly improve the ethics process.

“As someone who served on the Ethics Committee for six years, I have a full understanding of the burdens its Members bear. I also have a deep respect for those who have served on the Committee, both past and present. The recommendations before the House will only serve to assist them in their efforts.

“Adopting the Capuano Task force recommendations will provide the public—and the House—with the assurance that credible allegations of wrongdoing will be addressed by the Ethics Committee in a timely manner. It will also bring an additional measure of transparency to the ethics enforcement process.

“It creates this transparency without compromising the House’s constitutional prerogative to discipline its Members, without interfering with the work of the Ethics Committee, and without altering the substantive rules governing the conduct of the Committee’s deliberations.

“I fully recognize that bringing non-Members into the enforcement mechanism is not just a step forward, but also a significant departure from the traditions of the House. To those who have concerns, I pledge that I will work closely with the Republican Leader to ensure that we jointly appoint to the new Office of Congressional Ethics intelligent and honest men and women who understand the importance of non-partisan behavior and the compelling need to act fairly to protect the interests of the public, the House, and its Members.

“Finally, Mr. Speaker, I pledge that the House Leadership will closely monitor the work of the new Office of Congressional Ethics and continually review all reasonable proposals intended to guarantee the highest ethical conduct and a more effective and transparent ethics process. If additional changes are required, we will propose them.

“The panel proposed today is a reasonable step forward, which is why it has the support of leading reform groups, including Common Cause and U.S. PIRG. It responds to the needs of the House and the demands of public. It will restore confidence in our ability to carry out our constitutional duty to discipline ourselves and increase respect for the legislation that we produce. I urge its adoption.”

Here is a link to House Resolution 895 which establishes the OCE or Office of Congressional Ethics.

Here is a link to the Roll Call Vote for the legislation which was not a slam dunk at 229-182.

But the best part is the OCE website and the text offered here as well on how to submit information to the OCE

How to Submit Information to the OCE

The OCE will accept and review information concerning allegations within its jurisdiction.

The following information should be included in any submission:

(1) the name, address, telephone number and e-mail address, if any, of the person submitting the information, and the organization s/he is affiliated with, if any;

(2) the full name of the subject of the allegation;

(3) the date(s) the alleged conduct occurred;

(4) a concise statement of facts (or, the source of the information in the event that the person submitting the information does not have first-hand knowledge of the facts);

(5) the law, regulation or rule allegedly violated, if known;

(6) if applicable, name(s) and contact information for any potential witness(es);

(7) if applicable, copies of any documents related to the allegation; and

(8) a signed declaration acknowledging that section 1001 of title 18 United States Code (popularly known as the False Statement Act) applies to the information provided. A copy of the False Statements is available on the OCE’s website and can be provided on request.

All information will be reviewed by the OCE; however, submitting information does not trigger an investigation. The decision to begin an investigation (preliminary review) lies solely with the Board.

This blog encourages readers to submit information to the OCE. Do you suppose they would investigate Nancy Pelosi if enough members of the public submitted information to the OCE? It is recommended that anyone submitting to the OCE follow their instructions carefully and do so in a respectful manner. But by all means submit.

Pelosi’s Past Charade on Ethics Exposes Her Own Culture of Corruption

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, News Media, disclosure, ethics, oversight, Law, Justice, obama, Pelosi, Legislation on May 24th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

A Republican Congressman is given credit for initiating a move in the House to investigate claims of Nancy Pelosi that the CIA misled her on enhanced interrogation techniques during briefings in 2002. The Democrats in the House can be given credit for defeating the measure in order to protect Pelosi from the truth. Other accounts in the news suggest the GOP is not done chasing this illusive disclosure. But what demonstrates the real nonsense surrounding the missteps by the first woman Speaker of the House in United States history is her own words as immortalized in many press releases from her time as the leading House Democrat.

Speaker PelosiBelow the news stories presented here are press releases from Nancy Pelosi touting her manufactured concern about ethics. She pounded the idea of a New Direction for America she claimed was the mandate from the public after Dems defeated the GOP in midterm elections in 2006. Among the never ending diatribe from this Speaker of the House was a constant reminder that Washington would be transparent, there was an end to a culture of corruption and that liberals had passed the strongest ethics legislation in a generation. Why Rep Rob Bishop needed to introduce a measure to investigate Pelosi when there is a mechanism for this within Congress seems to indicate what one might expect. Pelosi was talkin’ stupid since the beginning and only now do her words place her in serious jeopardy. But the outcome in Congress reported here only demonstrates that Dems will talk ethics but not conduct themselves in an ethical manner.

Pelosi Statement on President Signing Landmark Lobbying and Ethics Bill into Law

Pelosi talkin' toughWashington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement this afternoon after President Bush signed into law the Honest Leadership, Open Government Act of 2007:

“Last November, the American people spoke clearly for change in the way business is done in Washington. And with the toughest lobbying and ethics reform in a generation signed into law today, we have delivered that change.

“The Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007 meets Americans’ demand for high ethical standards, transparency, disclosure, and accountability.

“Among many stringent provisions, it requires unprecedented levels of disclosure on the interactions between lobbyists and legislators; it bans gifts from lobbyists and limits privately-funded travel; it ends the pay-to-play scheme known as the ‘K Street Project’; and it closes the revolving door between Congress and lobbyists.

“Honest leadership is not a partisan goal. It is the key to putting the interests of all Americans ahead of the special interests.”

“House Democrats got straight to work this week by passing the toughest Congressional ethics reform in history. We have broken the link between lobbyists and legislation: banning gifts and travel from lobbyists and organizations that retain or employ them, banning travel on corporate jets, shutting down the K Street project, subjecting all earmarks to the full light of day, and reinstating the strict rules of pay-as-you-go budgeting.

“But these reforms are just our first steps. In the coming months, we will propose legislation to close the revolving door between government officials and lobbying firms and shine a light on lobbyists’ efforts to influence legislation. We will also require a bipartisan task force to report out recommendations on the creation of an outside entity to uphold the highest ethical standards here in the House.

“Honest leadership is not just a partisan goal. It is the key to putting the interests of all Americans ahead of the special interests. It is what the American people sent us here to do, and House Democrats are proud to have taken serious and substantive steps to ensure Congress governs with the highest ethical steps.”

Pelosi: Democrats’ First Order of Business in the New Congress Will Be Ethics Reform

Pelosi and Reid“Democrats will pursue an aggressive legislative agenda during the first days of the new Congress that serves the public interest rather than the special interests. An integral part of restoring integrity to Congress is ensuring that legislative decisions are made for the common good. The People’s House should not be an auction house, with legislation being sold to the highest bidder. For that reason, the first order of business will be ethics reform.

“The American people have continued to pay the price for the Republican culture of corruption – through a complex prescription drug bill that explicitly prohibits the government from negotiating lower prices due to intense lobbying from the pharmaceutical industry and billions of dollars in giveaways for large oil companies that were already raking in record profits.

“The Democratic ethics package will break the link between lobbyists and legislation, where well-connected special interests write legislation that cost consumers more at the pharmacy and gas pump.

“The American people want greater integrity in Washington, and Democrats pledge to make this the most honest, ethical and open Congress in history.”

Three News Stories Demonstrate Risk of Appeasement

Posted in Public Affairs, Terrorism, war, wordpress, Politics, GOP, Democrats, Religion, conservative, liberal, conspiracy, News Media, United States, obama, Opinion, Cheney, Foreign Affairs, Islam, Muslim, Military, FBI, 9/11 on May 23rd, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

The first story is a bit of a surprise. The second, another in a series of stories on Dick Cheney is not. And the third, on Gitmo and the detainees continues. President Obama also suggests ‘loose nuclear materials’ will be secured in four years. Funny how US Presidents always seem to provide time lines that coincide with the election cycle for the term of the office they hold. Doesn’t do much for the public confidence factor. Is Obama’s stance on Gitmo based on a reasonable approach, his own personal opinion or the concern that not closing the facility will break one more campaign promise to his followers?

The bomb plot story has a time line indicating it is a legacy operation from the Bush Administration. You remember him. The President many love to bash yet are willing to forget he kept the US safe since 9/11 along with the man in the second story listed here by the name of Dick Cheney. BTW, another story indicates Cheney’s popularity in the polls has risen since his return to public discourse on the topic of terrorism. And another story suggests ‘the muscle’ for the GOP resides in Cheney, Limbaugh and Gingrich. Another ‘funny’ item in the sense of interesting or unusual is that President Obama mentions in the third story presented here that his number one job is to keep America safe.

A familiar pattern seems to be emerging here. Other reports suggest Obama cannot distance himself from items associated with the previous administration no matter how hard he may try. He has at least altered action of promises made to his legions of followers and been criticized by them for not being to the left enough. His actions would indicate he agrees there is some wisdom in what Bush and Cheney accomplished yet he cannot bring himself to say it. But his actions reflect that at times. And yet the left side of politics continues to bash the past and criticize the present. While the rest of us realize things weren’t so bad during the Bush years. Sure, there were reasons to be concerned. One example would be Bush pushing the shamnesty immigration policy that was soundly defeated by public outrage. The fall from grace on fiscal discipline is another. But the number one job as described by Obama in the third story here was a complete success.

Those who support keeping Gitmo open and handling the detainee question as in the Bush years express the notion that it has worked. Those who oppose it suggest their is something wrong, immoral or impractical about it. Try this parallel. The use of self-defense in protecting one’s life and the lives of others. No reasonable person wishes to kill another. But sometimes it is necessary. Consider you have a weapon in your possession. An armed intruder violates the sanctity of your home and the scenario places you face to face with the threat. As the intruder raises his weapon toward you there are two choices. It might be nice to talk it over and find a mutually agreeable resolution to this conflict. But most reasonable people would understand the intruder already made his decision which leaves you with one choice. It is unfortunate. But not unlike the Gitmo and other terrorism questions choosing the ‘nice’ choice may end your life or the lives of others.

Try stirring that ingredient into your humble pie.

New York Bomb Plot Suspects to Appear in Court

21 May 2009

terrorismFour men arrested in an alleged plot to blow up a synagogue, a Jewish community center, and U.S. warplanes are expected to appear in federal court Thursday in White Plains, New York.

Federal prosecutors say New York City authorities arrested the men Wednesday, following a year-long undercover operation. In a statement Wednesday, prosecutors say the suspects tried to buy plastic explosives from an undercover FBI informant to use in an attack on a New York synagogue.

They are also accused of trying to obtain surface-to-air missiles to attack military planes at an Air National Guard Base near New York City.

Federal prosecutors say the four men have been charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. They have also been charged with conspiracy to acquire and use anti-aircraft missiles.

Officials say three of the defendants are U.S. citizens and one is of Haitian descent.

Authorities say one suspect, James Cromitie, told an informant that his parents once lived in Afghanistan and that he was angry about the killings of Muslims in Afghanistan and Pakistan by U.S. military forces.

The other three suspects are David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen.

A local newspaper, the Times Herald-Record, says an area mosque leader has described one of the men, 21-year-old Payen, as a “strange kid” with “a lot of psychological problems.” The newspaper quotes mosque leader Hamin Rashada as saying Payen would occasionally attend services and that his statements on Islam often had to be corrected.

Cheney Says Harsh Interrogation Was ‘The Right Thing to Do’

21 May 2009

former VP Dick CheneyFormer U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has defended the Bush administration’s use of harsh interrogation methods, saying they were necessary to get information from terrorists and save American lives.

In a speech Thursday at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, Cheney said President Barack Obama and other officials have largely “mischaracterized” the previous administration’s approval of such techniques.

He said they were “essential,” “justified,” “successful,” and the “right thing to do” and that they prevented the violent deaths of thousands and possibly hundreds of thousands of people.

The former vice president, who played a major role in crafting U.S. anti-terrorist policies under George W. Bush, said the methods were always given legal review before approved and that torture was never permitted.

President Obama says the Bush-approved simulated drowning technique known as water-boarding was torture and vows to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Cheney has sharply criticized Mr. Obama’s national security policies, saying he is making the United States more vulnerable to terror attacks.

Former Vice President Cheney has said he has made a request to declassify two CIA memos that he says outlines, in detail, the successes that came from using harsh techniques during interrogation of terror suspects.

Obama Defends Decision to Close Guantanamo Prison

Al-Qaida actively planning to attack US

national security with Obama, Biden and PelosiU.S. President Barack Obama says al-Qaida is actively planning to attack the United States again.

In a speech in Washington Thursday, Mr Obama said these are “extraordinary times” for the country, fighting two wars and facing a range of challenges. He said his single most important responsibility as president is to keep the American people safe.

The president said the U.S. must use all its elements of power to defeat the threat posed by al-Qaida terrorists, and he added that steps have already been taken to ensure the country is secure.

Addressing an audience of senior Cabinet officials and members of Congress, Mr. Obama said these steps include providing the necessary resources to fight the extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan who attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001, and investing in military and intelligence capabilities. He also said his administration has “re-energized” a global effort to curb proliferation of nuclear weapons - in the president’s words, “to deny the world’s most dangerous people access to the world’s deadliest weapons.”

Mr. Obama said all “loose” nuclear materials in the world should be secure within four years.

He said the United States is better protecting its borders and increasing its preparedness for any future attacks or natural disasters. The United States is building new partnerships around the world, the president said, “to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al-Qaida and its affiliates.”

Mr. Obama said the United States has renewed American diplomacy, so that the U.S. once again has the “strength and standing to truly lead the world.”

Obama defends decision to close Guantanamo prison

President Obama has defended his decision to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying the facility set back the moral authority of the United States.

Although hundreds of people have been detained at Guantanamo during the past seven years, Mr. Obama said, the military commissions set up to try those detainees have handled only three cases.

Continued operation of the prison at Guantanamo has “weakened” U.S. national security, according to Mr. Obama, who announced his intention to transfer some of those held in Cuba to so-called “supermax” prisons - ultra-secure detention facilities - in the United States.

The president’s plan to close Guantanamo by January of next year has attracted widespread criticism in the United States from those who oppose the transfer of dangerous suspects to U.S. states.

Mr. Obama pledged that his administration will not release anyone who would endanger U.S. national security or the American people.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney, who has sharply criticized Mr. Obama’s policies on Guantanamo and other issues, also is speaking out on national-security issues Thursday.

Mr. Obama says the Guantanamo detention camp has been an obstacle to getting allies to cooperate with the United States in fighting worldwide extremism.

He described the prison as a “mess” and said it was a “misguided experiment” begun by the administration of former President George W. Bush.

Mr. Obama said all pending cases at Guantanamo will be reviewed.

US Must Not Abandon Principles

President Obama has said that after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the United States entered a new era, in which enemies did not abide by any laws of war and presented new challenges to the application of U.S. law.

Mr. Obama said the government needs new tools to protect the American people, prevent terrorist attacks and prosecute those who carry them out.

He said that faced with an uncertain threat to the United States after the September 11 attacks, the government made a series of hasty decisions in an effort to protect Americans, and did so based on fear rather than foresight.

He said the U.S. cannot afford to set aside its principles, something he accused both Democrats and Republicans of doing.

President Obama called on both parties to take a new approach, rejecting torture and recognizing the imperative of closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay.

The president said the United States needs to update its institutions to deal with the threat of extremism, but must do so within the the rule of law and with due process, checks and balances and accountability.

President Obama said the legal approach for fighting terrorism over the last eight years was neither effective nor sustainable, and failed to adhere to America’s values.

Mr. Obama said that is why he chose to ban so-called enhanced interrogation techniques, such as water-boarding. He said he rejects the assertion that such methods are the most effective means of interrogation.

He said they undermine the law, alienate the U.S. internationally, and increase the enemies’ will to fight.

Some detainees to be tried in US federal courts

President Obama says whenever feasible, detainees at Guantanamo who have violated American criminal laws will be tried in American federal courts.

Mr. Obama noted that terrorists including Zaccarias Moussaoui, identified as the 20th hijacker in the September 11 attacks, was convicted in a U.S. court and is serving a life prison sentence.

He said detainees who violate the laws of war will be tried through military commissions, saying such panels have a history in the United States dating back to the first U.S. president and the Revolutionary War.

The president said his administration is bring the commissions in line with the rule of law, instead of using what he called the same “flawed” commissions of the last seven years.

Many challenges remain before closure of prison

President Obama says there are detainees at Guantanamo who in effect “remain at war” with the United States.

He acknowledged challenges in closing the facility, and said his goal is to construct a legitimate legal framework for Guantanamo detainees.

He said the toughest decision on the closure is what to do with detainees who cannot be prosecuted but yet pose what he called a “clear danger” to the American people.

The president said if the U.S. determines it must hold someone indefinitely to prevent a terror attack, then it must be done with a system that involves judicial and congressional oversight.

Review of state secret doctrine nears completion

President Obama says his administration is nearing completion of a thorough review of the state secret doctrine.

Mr. Obama noted the doctrine has been used for many decades by presidents to challenge legal cases involving secret programs. He said the practice is “absolutely necessary” to protect national security, but he is concerned that it has been overused.

He said governments must not protect information merely because it reveals violations of the law or embarrasses the government.

Obama’s 3rd Clinton Administration

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, Democrats, liberal, Clinton, obama on May 22nd, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

It didn’t take long for Bill Clinton to get back on the government payroll. Not to mention his failed attempt to become First Lady was foiled by his wife’s caving to Barack Obama. But hey, in 2012 or 2016 Hillary may try again. Many say all she needed was SoS cred to be a viable candidate. And since health care will still be a mess she can try that again too.

But the real point is that President Obama pretty much hired the former Clinton Administration anyhow so what’s the difference? Now the whole gang is back we can revisit the nineties. Throw in a little Jimmy Carter economics retro and we can have the seventies back as well. Oh boy, we have so much to look forward, er, look backward to..

Bill Clinton Named UN Special Envoy to Haiti

19 May 2009

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has named former U.S. President Bill Clinton as his special envoy to Haiti.

The secretary-general said Tuesday he is confident that Mr. Clinton will bring energy, dynamism and focus to the task of mobilizing international support for Haiti’s economic recovery and reconstruction.

A statement issued through Mr. Clinton’s foundation quotes Mr. Ban as saying he had discussed the appointment with Haiti’s president, René Preval, and that the Haitian leader welcomed it on behalf of the Haitian government and people.

Mr. Clinton said it is an honor to accept the secretary-general’s invitation to become special envoy to Haiti. The two men visited Haiti in March to refocus international attention on restoring economic security to the Caribbean country, the poorest in the Western Hemisphere.

Haiti is struggling to recover from four successive storms last year that killed hundreds of people and wiped out about 15 percent of its economic output.

In April, Haiti received $324 million in new aid commitments from international donors for the next two years.

The Inter-American Development Bank announced the pledges after hosting a donors’ conference for Haiti in Washington. The bank said the money pledged includes $41 million in budget support for 2009.

As the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, Mr. Clinton will travel to that country several times within the next year. The post carries an annual salary of $1.

4 Top Dems Talkin’ Stupid

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, Biden, Democrats, liberal, obama, Pelosi, Reid, Entertainment on May 21st, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

Is it time for President Obama to take his VP, Senate Majority Leader and Speaker of the House to the woodshed? Oh wait, Obama too has botched a few lines, like saying he visited 57 states with one to go during the campaign. That of course would be one of his minor foot-in-the-mouth moments. With various factions of the Democratic party and voters expressing displeasure with Obama’s continuation of Bush Administration items and the bumbling of top Dems, how do libs feel about their fine representatives? Probably no better than the rest of us albeit for different reasons.Reid, oops, read the rest of the story below to get the full flavor of the Senate Majority Leader’s impressive blunders. For an American press which usually paints over liberal disasters the AP was apparently not willing to give up the opportunity to embarrass party leaders. Too much fun I suppose. No need to revisit Biden giving away state secrets, Pelosi lying about waterboarding or other Obama gaffes beyond the 57/58 state thing. Nor is it necessary to review the Dems nomination blunders, hiring lobbyists and tax cheats, etc.Stanford Matthews

Reid joins Biden, Pelosi in misstatements

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid became the latest Democrat to stray into rhetorical trouble Tuesday, botching statements on three subjects in one news conference — including the fragile health of the chamber’s most senior members.

The Nevada Democrat reported that one of them, Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., was absent because he was receiving a new round of treatment for his brain cancer. Asked if the cancer was in remission, Reid replied, “As far as I know, it is, yes.”

Kennedy’s office refused to confirm Reid’s comments or make any statement in response, the public silence a classic Washington disavowal.

Would Barry Remove Illegal Aliens?

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, Immigration, Law, Justice, Foreign Affairs, Border Control, Legislation, Blogs4Borders on May 20th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

illegal immigration
Ah, the momentary optimism caused by an apparent report of good news followed by the sensible concern it may all be a sham. The topic of shamnesty, illegal immigration, illegal aliens and the preposterous notion that somehow they are the victims and American citizens the perps has long fueled the disdain or regularly expressed outrage rejected by liberals.

That Barack Obama would be initiating one common sense approach to deal with illegals who in addition to being in violation of immigration law are also criminals is met with skepticism on this blog as well as a post at Hot Air.

Crackdown on criminal illegal aliens launched by … Barack Obama?

posted at 10:08 am on May 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

So alarmingly sensible does this sound that I’m panicked at what the catch might be.

illegals promoting shamnesty

There is a ‘pilot program’ that would be funded by $200 million to match illegals with their criminal record fingerprints and remove them from the US after serving their sentence. Yes, you would think that should be the current and historic outcome but it has not been. And the fact that President Obama would initiate or support such a sensible approach is mind boggling given the track record of libs on immigration not to mention nearly everything else.

Maybe after this fantasy becomes reality he would consider removing the other illegals. Ya, right.

Iranian Threat Grows as World Sleeps Again

Posted in Public Affairs, Terrorism, war, wordpress, Politics, Religion, Nuke, Iran, Foreign Affairs, Islam, Muslim on May 19th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

Iran nukesAlthough the report below is brief the less than subtle omission by one of Ahmadinejad’s challengers to reject the holocaust denial renders him just another thug cut from the same cloth. How difficult is it to draw the conclusion that this is simply more Iranian dinner theatre attempting to portray their country as something other than what it is. Just one more haven for the ‘religion of peace’ focused on Middle East power, nuclear extortion or worse as well as the destruction of Israel and infidels in general.

At the rate Iran delays the inevitable intervention to eliminate their pursuit and use of nuclear weapons the prospect that they will succeed or that Israel will be the one to stop them increases. And somehow through all of this President Obama gives the impression he thinks he has the answer where none has been found to date. It is time the rest of the world reduces the Iranian threat to a minor historical footnote unless we would all rather face the limited options once Iran has a few nukes.

Iran Reformist Candidate Targets Ahmadinejad’s Holocaust Denial

One of two reformist candidates in Iran’s upcoming election is lashing out at President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for his denial of the Holocaust.

Former parliamentary speaker Mehdi Karroubi says Mr. Ahmadinejad’s claim that the Holocaust never happened, only serves to antagonize the West. He also says such comments help the rest of the world to stand by Israel.

This is not the first time Mr. Karroubi has criticized the Iranian president for his stance on the Holocaust, during which six million Jews died at the hands of the Nazis.

In April, he called Mr. Ahmadinejad’s denial of the Holocaust “harmful” to Iran’s interests.

Mr. Karroubi and fellow reformist presidential candidate, former Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi have also accused President Ahmadinejad of mismanaging the country’s oil resources.

Iranians go to the polls June 12.

Mr. Mousavi was prime minister in the 1980s during Iran’s war with Iraq and is seen as the main challenger to President Ahmadinejad.

Although Iran’s nuclear program and Mr. Ahmadinejad’s negative comments about Israel have generated attention abroad, analysts predict the worsening Iranian economy and high inflation will dominate the campaign.
