AP on Romney on Libby
Amy Lorentzen from AP is credited for writing the story below on Mitt Romney’s reaction to President Bush commutating Scooter Libby’s sentence. The chosen title indicates Amy believes there is something wrong with Romney’s opinion. Although she mentions the excessive number of Clinton pardons and commutations no commentary is presented as in the story’s title.
Opponents enjoy trying to use Mitt Romney’s record against him. But they are cherry picking again this time. He expressed an intention not to overturn jury decisions. And as stated in the piece, he denied each and every request for pardon or commutation of sentence, 172 and 100 respectively. And he expressed his understanding of why President Bush commuted Libby’s sentence. That does not necessarily indicate he agrees with it. His denial of all requests in his own past would indicate he does not favor the action but understands President Bush’s determination. And if the remainder of the analysis is correct, so be it.
And of course no political report this week is complete without a reporter’s analysis of fund raising. The long and the short of it for Mitt Romney is he is well funded from all sides. He has campaigned and run ads and raised money and is doing well in the polls. OMG, his fund raising was less this time. OMG, the Dems are killer on fund raising in the 2nd quarter. The only real surprise was early reports indicating McCain would be under 10 million and a subsequent report in excess of that number. Ok, two surprises were out there. Obama’s small donor strategy was impressive. Enough said on fund raising. It is what you do with the money that counts.
