At the Pleasure of the President
There have been the usual and typical responses to the latest dance by AG Alberto Gonzales. Those supporting President Bush, Alberto Gonzales, the GOP in general or similar preferences tend to focus on the part of the issue that holds all US attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President.
Those who oppose Bush, Gonzales and anything GOP continue the charade that they actually care about people who may have been fired unfairly. Overacting and excessive use of feigned concern as political gamesmanship is as
pointless and insincere as casually dismissing the termination of people from their jobs. The only thing worse than either of these reactions is if the fired employees were running a game.
If people are employed and serve at the pleasure of the President, then why were they not afforded the same option as many higher level positions and given a choice to resign instead of being fired? Even Rush Limbaugh when speaking on this topic used the phrase “some of them were fired for cause.” That seems to indicate not all were. And we all know Rush has his finger on the pulse of politics in America. If Rush doesn’t know, who does?
Some refer to this as a non-story. That’s the problem. It is reasonable to assume that it is in fact a very important story to those who were fired. And it is hard to believe that eight or so US attorneys are going to be fired without the AG having knowledge of it. There seems to be little doubt that Senator Dominici acted improperly. Certainly if that is true this is a story. And more than a story, that would make this issue more important than some would have us believe.
