Measuring the Value of Popular Culture

Posted in wordpress, internet, America, Hol_ywood, Opinion, Entertainment, myspace, facebook on May 8th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

to the dumpster
What is it about that which can be characterized ‘popular culture’ or some sort of phenomena of civilization at any given time and its attraction for the masses? On the internet it may be MySpace or Facebook or Twitter. On TV it may be so-called reality shows like Survivor or Dancing with the Stars or American Idol.

Is it simply that those whose job it is to dream up money making ideas for television find a way to get millions of people to pay attention long enough to sell a great deal of advertising time? The same could be asked of internet geniuses who assemble online infrastructure to handle millions of users for who knows what valid purpose if one exists.

It may be fair to state that sporting or athletic competition in its well known forms of baseball, football, basketball, golf, tennis, racing, the Olympics and many others have helped strengthen the sense of community shared by those in participating locales. Aside from the periodic falls from grace of various sports stars as with any other celebrity group, role models and the positive outcomes from ordinary folks engaging in athletic training and competition as well as being spectators can encourage personal achievement and the development of enviable human qualities.

So what do these other popular culture phenomena have to offer? Where does MySpace, Facebook or Twitter offer some redeeming social value that trumps its obvious monetary benefit for those who control it? Certainly it is fair to say a handful of people have gained by competing on American Idol each year. And it is also fair to say that aside from the lure of a chance at great wealth they may be pursuing an honest dream to achieve a goal in the performing arts in some way. But where is that avenue for personal development with the others? Sure, you can network on social networking sites and it may possibly lead to assistance in reaching some reasonable goal like landing a job or something similar. But is that why so many are attracted to these current popular culture icons?

One Wiki definition offered for popular culture may expect too much from these ‘human activities’. Popular culture (or pop culture) is the culture — patterns of human activity and the symbolic structures that give such activities significance …

Another definition from artconnected DOT org may be viewed as too critical of pop culture. The opposite of high cultural art forms, such as the opera, historic art, classical music, traditional theater or literature; popular culture …

But one from edublogs DOT org may be close. Cultural experiences widely enjoyed by members of various groups within the community.

Those definitions were simply found by using the define search on Google. But none of this answers the question of why some forms of popular culture do not appear to have any really useful value other than generating revenue. The only reason this point is raised on this blog is that it seems all the hype and talk about these current pop culture forms rests solely with the fact they are popular by virtue of the quantity of people attracted to them. How is that a measure of anything other than commercial success? How does it advance the species? How does this make us better? Is there anything about it which indicates a higher goal? Or is it just about money or being cool?

Consumers Push Back, Time Warner Retreats

Posted in Money Matters, Technology, wordpress, internet, Public, Net Neutrality, telecom, Business on April 18th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

Many reports have warned the public about the threat of tiered pricing for internet service. It may be falling on deaf ears except those who were exposed to the idea for real by Time Warner.  If you remember the days when AOL was one of the few ISP’s when all was dialup that did not require long distance charges this should get your attention.

AOL is owned by Time Warner.  Many who remember the less than inspiring service from AOL in the dialup days should not be surprised by their parent corp making this move.

Time Warner Cable says it’s trying to charge a small minority of customers for using a large majority of bandwidth on its network, while critics claim the company is restraining broadband Internet usage and trying to boost profits.

“Cable operators know it’s only a matter of time before broadband access reaches the TV set, and that could be a disaster for the industry under its current pricing model,” said Michael Greeson, president of The Diffusion Group, a market research and consulting firm. “Internet usage is skyrocketing, and consumers have grown accustomed to an all-you-can-eat broadband subscription, so the cable companies are looking for a way to put this genie back in the bottle.”

the internetYou can argue all day but the simple fact is telecom services whether voice, data or anything else mysteriously have similar pricing and it is all too much.  The single largest problem causing that is the reluctance of consumers to object to excessive pricing.  In this latest story on the topic the public has not been impressed.  That is largely an exception to typical consumer behavior which acquiesces to vendor pricing.

What adds to this insanity is government spending to increase broadband access to rural and other underserved areas.  To subsidize areas of lower population density and in this case lower broadband profit potential with public funding for private enterprise costs is another boon for special interest….top ISPs and telecom companies.

In the past cable companies were reluctant to serve sparsely populated areas for lack of potential subscribers per mile of cable installed.  Voice telecom is moving away from physical plant being wire and pole bound to wireless and cell towers.  The service has become less satisfactory and more expensive.  The same is on the horizon for other telecom services.

Rather than let the buyer beware or let competition set the price the sheep will be led to slaughter (figuratively speaking) as they have lost their way and no not how to influence the market or specially connected interests who control the outcome.

Time Warner’s claim that a few users consume more than their fair share of bandwidth as the excuse for tiered pricing is lame.  If it were true the excessive price charged to the remainder of subscribers would cover costs associated with the few they describe. And cable operators’ form of internet access is markedly different from non-cable ISPs.  Like other items described in the reference above maybe that is Time Warners real problem.

While conservative principles and a free market philosophy are noble ideas even Sean Hannity said on his radio program this week that not all business operators are honest but most are. No argument here but it does fit well in the ending note of this post.

This is one case where there are bandits in the marketplace. Without adequate public complaints all it takes is one vendor to introduce a bad deal and that becomes the standard almost overnight.  Then the option to take your business elsewhere becomes moot. All the prices are then essentially the same and there is no competition.

Queer Event at Amazon Upsets Some…

Posted in wordpress, internet, News Media, Opinion, Entertainment, Business on April 14th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

adam and eveEven after a few days homosexuals may still be offended by a story about Amazon dot com. Depending on who you read or believe the only thing that seems clear is certain books were removed from Amazon’s ranking and/or sales feature and thus more or less fell off the map so to speak. Some (ABC) call the published works ‘gay titles’ and others (CNET) call them ‘adult’ books. And Amazon apologized for what they viewed as their own careless or bungling management of the book listings. Add to that a hacker who is taking credit for the episode.

But if you’re like many people you simply find this to be a humorous account of much ado about nothing. With all the critical issues on the table these days, this story is not one of them but is good for a couple of laughs. That is unless Amazon turns this situation into a policy rather than a glitch. Now that would be an accomplishment.

Ya, go ahead, whine.

Realtor Obama, GM Cracks, Your Money and Liberals

Posted in Money Matters, wordpress, internet, News Media, oversight, obama, Freedom, Opinion, GM on April 10th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

Fractured afternoon

a beverage from time to timeOn the network news were to related stories that prompted this brief post. One featured an auction at GM’s Heritage Center where about 100 classic, vintage or otherwise special vehicles were on the block. Granted, the story touched the point that the relatively small revenue to be produced at this event does not even register on the company’s balance sheet Richter scale. But the company said it was the responsible thing to do.

I disagree. Since it won’t make any economic difference to GM’s fate it would be more responsible to keep the vehicles where they have been so they may remain satisfactorily protected and preserved and available to those interested.

But the only way it could be responsible is if GM has decided to go bankrupt and some strange arrangement would require selling these items to vultures far lower prices. And that doesn’t seem plausible; not the bankruptcy but the giveaway to vultures.

It was also noted again that the US government is spending $285 million on about 17,600 cars for use by public employees. That comes out to about $17,000 per vehicle. It’s an average but it could cause you to wonder what type of vehicles they are buying and what, if any, is the discount. Remember, you’re paying for it. If you bought that many items would you not want a discount? And what’s wrong with the cars the government has right now? After all, we’re in an economic ‘crisis’, right?

Wasn’t going to mention this one but here it is. In another report Obama is encouraging people to take advantage of low mortgage rates to refinance their loans. What might occur to you at first glance is an old rule of thumb. If you plan on staying put for some time to come you only consider refinance if the % is at least 2 points below what you are paying now. But even with that Obama either failed to mention that closing costs, etc., put an upfront price tag on the refinance or that these loans are provided with no closing costs. On top of that the reporter pointed out that many who would like to cannot because their house is upside down. Meaning when the bottom fell out of the real estate market their home’s value is now less than the mortgage.

books, libraries and liberalsOkay the post isn’t so brief and there’s another late addition to this edition. A search result today ended at the Internet Public Library. This was an accidental reminder of books rather than digital equivalents that led to a thought about Mark Levin’s current bestseller. With the search box staring back at one, what can you do? Entering ‘liberty and tyranny’ brought back a list of results and the first one was strange.

“The monthly lesbian and gay newsmagazine for the state of Kansas.” There is also a separate edition for the Kansas City area.

What does that have to do with liberty and tyranny? Don’t even go there. Fortunately the second search result was more to the point.

“Liberty Unbound is the web site for Liberty magazine, the monthly libertarian (classical liberal, or individualist) review of thought, culture and politics. The Nature of Liberty [magazine]

Posts published on this blog can be chosen spontaneously but that is usually limited to the topic and not the nature of the writing. (or ‘typing’ if you must) But it has happened from time to time and may again.

In most cases the posts here present some information and the blog author’s commentary. And of course readers are allowed to reply with comments. But just throwing out a few ideas or a rant from time to time does provide some pleasure.

Okay, reducing power now to standby to aid in minimizing my carbon footprint until the next post for any liberals who may care to read this. .. …. … . … . .. .

Wolverine

the internet and telecomIllegal file sharing sites is a topic that seems to never go away. The same could be said of malicious hackers and spam. And let’s not forget about those who want to rule the internet or tax it or overcharge for connection to it and use of it. But in terms of the specific story in this post, a writer being fired for illegally accessing a copy of a not yet released movie. What was he thinking?

Writer loses job over Wolverine
(from the BBC)

A US columnist is out of a job after posting an online review of an illegally downloaded copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Roger Friedman, who wrote the piece on his regular column, had worked at the Fox news website for 10 years.

Fox News said that the company’s representatives and Friedman “mutually agreed to part ways immediately”.

Here’s an interesting twist to the story.

Effects company denies leaking ‘Wolverine’
Friday, April 3 2009
By Lara Martin, Entertainment Reporter

An Australian visual effects company has denied leaking an unfinished workprint of X-Men Origins: Wolverine one month before its release.

What always accompanies stories in the main stream media and elsewhere are conflicting reports or widely differing estimates.

‘X-Men’ leak isn’t the real ‘Wolverine’
Tuesday, April 7th 2009
NY Daily News

Since word broke last week that a rough copy of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” was leaked onto the Web, an estimated 75,000 people hoping to see a potential blockbuster early and for free have downloaded Hugh Jackman’s comic-book actioner, set for release May 1.

Aside from the comment that this is ‘not the real movie’ notice the ‘estimated 75,000′ part. It would be fair to assume they mean ‘not the real movie’ to indicate the leaked version is a working copy that will be edited before release.

hol_wood‘Wolverine’ premiere may be in your town, or on your computer
07:45 AM PT, Apr 5 2009
LA Times

Wow, what is going to happen when “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” hits theaters on May 1?

More than 100,000 downloads of a nearly finished version of the film were snatched off of file-sharing websites this week after a copy of such a version of the 20th Century Fox film was leaked. The FBI is investigating and, believe me, the studio was badly rattled by the theft — this film, on paper, looked like it could be one of the biggest releases of 2009 but it has been encountering considerable turbulence for a movie still sitting on the runway.

You gotta love it. The 100,000 download estimate is from an item dated the fifth while the 75,000 estimate is from the seventh.

Wolverine Movie Bootleg: More than 1 Million Downloads
Monday April 6, 2009
AppScout

That leaked version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine has been online for about a week. And despite 20th Century Fox’s best efforts to curb its spread, the movie has been downloaded by more than one million users via BitTorrent.

filmmakingBut even better is the one million estimate offered on the date in between the other two. It may seem like a small thing and in this case it has the diminished value of who cares? Not so much who cares about the varying, correct or incorrect estimates but who cares about the movie? If you have an appreciation for storytelling or the cinematic experience, whatever that is these days, it is understandable you may be interested in this movie if the genre is your ‘thing’. But no matter what your interests or what you watch or how you fulfill the need to satisfy your personal demand for such leisure pursuits it is tough to argue that Hollywood and other sources for movies rarely fail to disappoint. The hype is also rarely justified after viewing the promoted offering.

To counter that conclusion readers are encouraged to submit their candidates for a list of spectacular examples of fine productions from the movie industry.

Consumers Snowed by Electronics Manufacturers

Posted in Money Matters, Technology, Education, wordpress, Microsoft, youtube, internet, ethics, United States, China, Video, HP, telecom, Music, Sony, WalMart, Nintendo, Entertainment, Business, Apple, Legislation, Japan, IBM on December 28th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

things like net neutralityAnother report of how enthralled (had to add this, enthralled = beguiled, filled with wonder and delight) consumers are with electronics offerings from manufacturers. This post is another attempt to raise some issues regarding consumer electronics. Some long standing criticism from this blog toward those who market electronics and control the infrastructure on which much of it is used range from how internet access is manipulated between what is available, offered and how it is priced to similar issues living in other telecom areas like wireless communication. Have you noticed how cell phones are marketed and its relationship to the primary function of telephones. That’s right. Voice communication between humans has long been the need filled by telephone service. Text messaging, chocolate phones, camera phones and all manner of other bells and whistles have relegated speaking to another on the phone as an afterthought. Could it be that spending the money necessary to offer reliable and quality voice communication does not present the profit margin desired by the providers? Could it be the public has once again allowed the market to be driven by the easily manipulated younger demographic with all that loose change to spend being ‘cool’? The manufacturers know it. Ignore the more demanding demographic for the one you can manipulate and who may have the most discretionary income with the most liberal criteria for purchasing decisions.

The ridiculous nature of the coming switch from analog to digital broadcasts is a critical tipping point in electronics related markets that should require no explanation for using adjectives like ‘ridiculous.’ The reasonable method for introducing new products and services by offering value in terms of quality, utility, pricing and other factors has been supplanted by collusion between entities within the public and private sectors in the electronics industry just like the examples found in the current ‘financial crisis’ stemming from the subprime mortgage scheme and lack of regulation and oversight from Wall Street to Main Street to the halls of government.

That is all the angst this blog author can withstand for the current post on this topic. It would be gratifying if the consuming public could muster enough discretion over their buying decisions as an aggregate to apply the needed pressure on suppliers to do the right thing. The vendors certainly won’t do it on their own. But then the same could be said about the public reaction to activity in government. And we all know to well how that usually works out.

2008 Consumer Electronica ‘Turns On’ the Public

18 December 2008

Retailers around the country are reporting a slower-than-usual holiday shopping season this year. But 2008 has been a terrific year for those who love consumer electronics - whether they are buying or just looking.

Despite the current economic downturn, large consumer electronics chains like Best Buy are doing brisk business this year
Despite the current economic downturn, large consumer electronics chains like Best Buy are doing brisk business this year

During lunch hour at the Midtown Manhattan outpost of Best Buy, the largest consumer electronics chain in America, the checkout line is 30 people deep and counting. That’s no surprise to Nicholas Thompson, a senior personal technology editor at Wired magazine.

“It’s been a cool year,” says Thompson. “There has been lots of stuff introduced that’s faster, smaller, sleeker, cheaper, better than anything we’ve had before.”

Thompson adds that product design also has improved this year, partly as the result of Apple products.

“Apple makes beautiful things, and these things sell. So now everyone is making beautiful things!”

Wired Magazine editor Nicholas Thompson says that in 2008, the smart money for portable music players is on the Sansa Fuze

One of the new products that Thompson believes deserve high marks for both design and affordability is the Sansa Fuze. It’s one of dozens of handheld digital music players on sale here.

“It’s about $80, which is much less than it would have cost a year ago, [and] you can watch TV shows. You can watch movies. You can listen to music, and you can look at photographs you can put on it, all your little media files.”

Thompson soon heads straight for the camera aisle, where he unhesitatingly picks up a stylish Sony T700. Unlike most digital cameras, which have smallish viewing screens, the entire back portion of the T700 is designed for viewing photos. He says people often put their photographs online, but relatively few people trouble themselves with viewing.

“But if you have a nice screen on your camera, it makes it a lot easier to share your photos with your friends,” he says.

The T700 digital camera has a screen almost as large as a traditional photograph

Another important feature of the Sony T700 Thompson touts is its Smile Shutter technology, which is able to detect when a person the camera is aimed at smiles. It then shoots the photo without the user having to press a button.

Nearby, shoppers are snapping up a surprisingly small and simple looking video camera called the Flip Ultra.

“Video cameras used to cost $300 to $400,” recalls Thompson. “And for a lot of people, all you want to do is take a little video of your dog and stick it on YouTube. And why pay $300 for that?”

In contrast, at $129, the Ultra is relatively inexpensive. It also has what Thompson considers another virtue: almost no buttons.

“Buttons can sometimes be good, but they can also confuse you. This very simple, very nice present for someone.”

“Next in line, please” is a request this cheerful Best Buy cashier calls out hundreds of time a day

Video games are bigger than ever in 2008. Thompson’s favorite this year is the FIFA 09 virtual football game based on the teams in the World Cup.

“For example, say you want to be the United States, or you want to be Brazil,” explains Thompson, “You actually have the simulation of all the soccer players who play on that national team. And if Brazil plays the United States, Brazil wins!”

When this Voice of America reporter asks him just why Brazil is sure to win, Thompson is quick to laughingly opine, “Brazil is better!” He adds that in the football-oriented video games of the past, the players would all look the same

“… and they would kind of run in the same direction, kick as hard, run as fast as each other. Now everybody is an individual,” he says.

Samsung high-end, flat-screen televisions offer images that can be almost too realistic for comfort

Thompson says hard-core couch potatoes who want excitement from their electronic toys without exercise - even of the virtual kind - will love Samsung’s new top-of-the-line, large-screen flat televisions. The store’s demonstration model uses liquid crystal display technology enhanced with light-emitting diodes as backlights.

“The colors are truer. The blacks are a lot better, and it’s much easier to watch for a long time,” Thompson says. “You actually feel like you are in a movie theater even though are just sitting in your own living room.”

Soon, a chase scene from The Dark Knight, the franchise’s most recent Batman film, begins to play on the television monitor. But Thomson says that virtually zooming through the streets of Gotham City at 250 kilometers per hour in the Batmobile - while sitting in one’s own living room at the same time - is only one of the high-tech thrills in store for gadget lovers during the 2008 holiday season.

Even Online Trends Suggest Voting for McCain/Palin

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Biden, McCain, internet, Advertising, obama, Gov Sarah Palin on November 4th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

Online visits and what people search about candidates reveals voter interest. For instance Sarah Palin is present in searches by Obama supporters as well as McCain supporters. Although Obama has more cash to throw around and has a larger online presence McCain videos have been incredibly popular.

The McCain campaign, however, excelled at online video, growing 175 percent in September with 3.2 million total streams. On Obama’s site, streams increased 60 percent to 2 million. Even though unique visitors to Obama’s site outpaced McCain’s in September, the increase percentage was 56 for McCain and 31 for Obama. That increase plus the presence of Sarah Palin in all visitors searches may indicate what people find important in this race.

Sarah Palin has been incredibly popular yet the MSM plays down her role and often asks if she is a negative for McCain. Maybe the negative is more the questions being asked by the media rather than anyone’s opinion of her. McCain’s flare for being the underdog and his monster push in the last week’s of the campaign seem to be drawing more attention to him, increasing his popularity and raising questions in voter’s minds about Barack Obama that have been muted by the press.

Those searching for McCain, for example, have also searched for Sarah Palin, campaign, debate. Those searching for Obama routinely typed in Sarah Palin, president, and vote. And …. For Obama, voters are searching Rezko, plumber, and Wright as much as economy, financial, and reform. It would seem that even while the MSM is giving Obama a pass on his negatives voters are searching for the answers where they can be found.

If Obama is elected voters who supported or opposed him may find the job market leaving them nothing more than a claim of a thousand dollar tax refund from Obama but with no job. And the Obama campaign continues to paint McCain as four more years of President Bush. But it is funny that for all the criticism of Bush we haven’t been attacked since 9/11 under his watch and Biden strongly warned Obama would be tested by our enemies if elected. So within six months of an Obama election we could be attacked and losing our jobs. It is another problem with Obama that his campaign and assistance from the media hopes you won’t notice.

That Obama and the media play down his associations with Ayers, Rezko, Wright, Pfleger, Khalidi, Davis, ACORN and the organizing intimidation of Alinsky and other problems, there are no such questions or problems with John McCain. Something you may want to think about as you head to the polls.

And while critics like to throw mud at Sarah Palin and also suggest she is not ready or capable consider something else the media ignores. As the most popular governor in the country, Sarah Palin does what elected officials are supposed to do. She has successfully represented her constituents which happen to be the citizens of Alaska. She has successfully attended to their needs while also succeeding with marriage and family and supporting core American values. That same devotion, dedication and success would follow her to the Office of Vice-President of the United States.

McCain’s record speaks for itself. His adherence to duty, honor, country and pursuit of reform, prosperity and peace spells success for America along with his running mate Sarah Palin. The Obama/Biden ticket has no such resume’.

Vote McCain/Palin today.

YouTube Yanks McCain Campaign Video

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, youtube, McCain, internet, disclosure, ethics, oversight, Law, Video, Opinion, Entertainment on October 16th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

YouTube removed McCain campaign videos from their site and the McCain campaign was unsuccessful in convincing the parent, Google, from changing their mind. At issue is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and whether ‘fair use’ has been applied to portions of the videos with copyrighted material included. Or is it? The first question might be to ask how difficult or time consuming would it be to get approval from the copyright owners to use the material and eliminate Google’s ‘expressed’ concern. But then with all the videos on YouTube that include copyrighted material how many have been removed? Google claims the quantity of video available does not allow them to proceed as suggested by the McCain campaign. This has to remind people of the egg on the face Google, Yahoo and others received when outed for assisting China in limiting citizens access to the net. Are they now limiting voters access to the candidates by barring some McCain video ads?

Update: McCain protests YouTube’s removal of his campaign videos
GOP candidate says YouTube acted too quickly to comply with copyright notices that are ‘without merit’

McCain’s campaign sent a letter Monday to YouTube parent company Google Inc., protesting YouTube’s removal of unnamed videos from the site after receiving take-down notices claiming copyright infringement under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The McCain camp goes on to suggest that YouTube set up a special process for reviewing the legal merit of take-down requests for YouTube accounts associated with candidates or their campaigns.

And Google responded with this….

In a letter sent yesterday to the McCain campaign, YouTube said that performing a substantial legal review of every DMCA take-down notice that it receives is not a “viable solution.”
It is not possible because of the scale of YouTube’s operations, the letter said. “Any such review would have to include a determination of whether a particular use is a ‘fair use’ under the law, which is a complex and fact-specific test that requires the subjective balancing of four factors,” the letter said. “No number of lawyers could determine with a reasonable level of certainty whether all the videos for which we receive disputed take-down notices qualify as fair use.”

Since Viacom sued Google last year for copyright infringement over clips shown on YouTube one can understand how this topic would concern the internet giant’s legal and financial teams. The real question may be how is the McCain camp video(s) treatment compared with others who have had their video banned? And an explanation from Google’s legal guru may or may not resolve the issue. The other (major) issue here is that YouTube can’t make accurate fair use decisions anyway, since it doesn’t know most of the key facts about the cases at issue. For instance, YouTube doesn’t know if the DMCA takedown issuer truly does control the rights claimed, and it doesn’t know if the uploader had a contract to use the clips in question. “When two parties disagree,” writes Levine, “we are simply not in a position to verify the veracity of either party’s claims.”

Reviewing a selection of reports on this story finds many expressing the notion that McCain’s campaign is seeking special treatment. Getting back to the question of having approval to use copyrighted content in advance of offering the video on YouTube, it seems that may not even satisfy Google according to their own mouthpiece. While the McCain camp can certainly be accused of pursuing their own best interests the Google/YouTube folks can certainly be accused of having the ability to use DMCA to their advantage while also using it for cover from public opinion.

Google/YouTube enjoys the benefit of serious traffic to their site and one has to wonder if an estimate of over $90 million in ad revenue for 2008 does not provide sufficient resources to better apply the DMCA in a manner similar to that suggested by McCain’s campaign. While you can argue that Google is just covering their butts on this one and should not be criticized for avoiding legal trouble they had to know showing Viacom clips would expose them to the possibility of legal action and went ahead with it anyhow. This seems more a case of selective enforcement than universal treatment.

MoreWhat Matters: Today’s Blog List

Posted in Public Affairs, Technology, Education, wordpress, internet, News Media, Opinion, Entertainment on September 13th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

The following are trackbacks to this past week’s Open Trackback Linkfest Haven Tuesday. From time to time some adjustments are made to the open trackback events for Blog @ MoreWhat.com. With this display of trackbacks comes the notice that entries this week presented in the special MoreWhat Matters post have been limited to the source blog’s first submission. For one thing some of the lists are getting a little long and unruly. Of course if the open trackback attracted 100 or more entries, fine, let it get unruly. But it is this blog’s understanding that an open trackback invites other blog’s best work for that time period. For encourgement to that end and not knowing which of multiple trackbacks the author thought the best, the first one was selected.

But it is unlikely anyone will read this notice. And that is okay. Blog @ MoreWhat.com does not claim to have the answers. But the attempt is made here to adhere to some kind of standard even if there isn’t one. It is hoped those who contribute will understand the sentiment. It would also be nice if blogs that still exist and remain on the Linkfest Haven Registry would participate and spread their stuff around the blogosphere or this part of it. A regular exchange between the blogs on the registry could be a good thing. And it follows that Conservative Cat (Bruce or Chairman Meow) wouldn’t mind either. The Open Trackback Linkfest Haven Saturday follows this post and in both cases your comments are welcomed and encouraged.

BTW, it appears TTLB has botched the rankings again as this blog’s rank changed several times in one day. It is now back in the cellar.
