Thanks Barry: Pubic or Private, Jobs Are Temporary

Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, Bush, wordpress, Politics, News Media, obama, Minimum Wage, Business on June 11th, 2010 by Stanford Matthews

Not like the report below from CNN is earth-shattering news. Ealier this year reports revealed significant growth in temporary employment. Then there is the fantasy world of President Obama who continues to maintain nanny state temporary census jobs in the latest monthly data demonstrate the recovery is in progress and the employment picture is rosy.

Many of the jobs employers are adding are temporary or contract positions, rather than traditional full-time jobs with benefits. With unemployment remaining near 10%, employers have their pick of workers willing to accept less secure positions.

Given the restrictions and burdens placed on employers from Obamacare who can blame them for hiring temps or treating workers as contractors? When the government mandates how you must manage your business if they haven’t already nationalized it there is little room for anything beyond closing the doors.

But hey, liberals can rejoice now that they are destroying the very economy that pays for all their entitlements. Well, it doesn’t really pay for them. It passes the debt on to the next generation. Current taxpayers are merely making what amounts to interest only payments on debt as far as the eye can see.

If the big spenders and program generators are thrown out of federal, state and local government starting in November 2010 we might be able to save our nation from the crippling agenda of the Democratic party majority.

Teaching Kids to Fail

Posted in Money Matters, Education, wordpress, liberal, conspiracy, News Media, disclosure, ethics, oversight on June 9th, 2010 by Stanford Matthews

In an earlier post it was suggested a biblical reference about teaching a person to fish can feed them for a lifetime. It was part of commentary on entitlements and out of control spending. A final comment in the post warned the NEA would then ask for more funding but suggested the NEA would not ask to be held accountable for actually teaching. That brings us to the following story.

NY passes students who get wrong answers on tests

miseducationDespite promises that the exams — which determine whether students advance to the next grade — would not be dumbed down this year, students got “partial credit” for wrong answers after failing to correctly add, subtract, multiply and divide. Some got credit for no answer at all.

Examples in the fourth-grade scoring guide include:

* A kid who answers that a 2-foot-long skateboard is 48 inches long gets half-credit for adding 24 and 24 instead of the correct 12 plus 12.

That’s just one item in the guide. You can follow the link for the full story. But you do not need to read the rest to understand the sad state of affairs in US education. Is there any wonder why US education continues to cost more while student achievement continues to flat line and fall behind other students around the world?

You cannot teach a kid to fish if they don’t know what a fish is. But with this style of education you can all but guarantee most of these students will become entitlement recipients that promote the liberal agenda of the nanny state. Not to mention burden the taxpayer who will always be expected to pay for this failure.

Arizona vs White House: Brewer to Meet with Obama

Posted in Public Affairs, Terrorism, wordpress, Politics, Tancredo, News Media, United States, Law, Justice, obama, Arizona, Border Control, Legislation, Mexico, Blogs4Borders, Jan Brewer on June 2nd, 2010 by Stanford Matthews

Here’s one of those instances where news reports suggest confusion by public officials or news sources.

Tuesday, 01 Jun 2010 04:00 PM

White House spokesman Adam Abrams said over the weekend that Obama’s schedule “doesn’t allow for a meeting” with Brewer but added that the president “does intend to sit down with the governor in the future.”

Tuesday, 01 Jun 2010 07:47 PM

A White House official said Tuesday that the meeting between Obama and Republican Gov. Jan Brewer is scheduled for Thursday. The official requested anonymity to discuss the president’s schedule ahead of its public release.

The 400pm excerpt is from Fox News. As it is dated only a few hours before the second report you might wonder if the WH gave Fox one response and AP another. Regardless of that the fine ‘anonymous source’ from the WH claims Obama and Brewer will have a sit down Thursday.

This meeting could be the part in this story where we see who is playing games and who is real. You could say that both Obama and Brewer have drawn their own lines in the sand on this issue. And it would seem one must relinquish some ground for the other to succeed. Brewer may have more riding on this than Obama. Will she stand her ground or cave to the pressure?

The following may suggest how tough Brewer will be given the mood of the country.

Poll: Arizona Immigration Law Popular Nationally
Tuesday, 01 Jun 2010 02:35 PM

The Arizona immigration law continues to receive high marks in national polls from registered voters even as it remains unpopular in liberal circles.

In the latest Quinnipiac University poll, released Tuesday, 48 percent said they want their state to pass legislation similar to Arizona’s, while 35 percent said they do not. Overall, 51 percent approve of the law, opposed to 31 percent who disapprove.

This dovetails with a series of other recent polls that have showed support as high as two-thirds of respondents backing the law, which Republican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed in April, It has sparked a heated debate over the direction of the nation’s immigration policy.

Rand Paul Wins, Now Faces Race Card

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, News Media, disclosure, ethics, Law, Justice, Legislation on May 21st, 2010 by Stanford Matthews

In the same week that Rand Paul coasts to victory with a stunning voter majority in the Kentucky race for US Senate a ‘controversy’ is manufactured. A reasonable take on the story is offered at the Washington Post.

from David Weigel | May 20, 2010; 12:09 PM ET at WaPo:

I can’t decide whether Paul has benefited or been hurt by the change of focus from the original story — whether his opposition to basically any federal intervention in business practices meant he opposed the Americans With Disabilities Act, opposed FDA regulation of food, etc. Instead, this has become a fairly tired “is candidate a racist or isn’t he?” story — one that Paul thinks he can deflect.

And here’s part of the ‘take’ at PMSNBC:

In his 15-minute interview with Maddow, Paul repeatedly declined or sidestepped opportunities to endorse the provisions of the 1964 law which require hotels, restaurants, and other businesses to accept all customers without discriminating on the basis of race or ethnicity.

He repeated several times that he opposes racial discrimination. “I’m not in favor of any discrimination of any form, I would never belong to any club that excluded anybody for race,” he said. At the end of the interview, Paul added, “I don’t believe that any private property (owner) should discriminate either.”

But he did not say whether he supported using federal law to enforce non-discrimination in privately owned businesses. He said “had I been around” in 1964 “I would have tried to modify that.”

He also said the debate over the civil right law’s limits on rights of private property owners “is still a valid discussion.”

Suffice it to say that in the liberal camp you are a bad person if you want to ‘modify’ any legislation they support or ‘discuss’ any part of their self-approved agenda. Hey libs, everything is subject to discussion, even your tired old race card tactic.

Below is a link to Rand Paul’s site and his press release on the story.

Rand Paul Sets the Record Straight
Published on 20 May 2010 by Jesse

In response to liberal media attacks, Dr. Rand Paul today released the following statement:

Seems clear what Rand Paul was saying. He obviously opposes discrimination as does this blog author. But he also is concerned about government overstepping its constitutional limits as well as other threats to freedom and liberty as layed out by the founding documents of our nation. While this blog author does not necessarily agree with everything Rand Paul or his father Ron may express, any differences of opinion would benefit from more discussion.

Discussing issues is an idea lost on liberals. They would prefer you surrender your freedom and allow them to control everything, no questions asked.

Election 2010: No Safe Seats

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, GOP, Democrats, News Media, Opinion on May 19th, 2010 by Stanford Matthews

WeThePeopleGOV.jpg

There are dominant themes in political chatter this election cycle. That is not what distinguishes this year’s political season from any other. Public anger against business as usual in Washington DC and elsewhere has POLS operating outside their typical comfort zone. Where tax and spend typically applied to Democrats plenty of Republicans have earned the liberal moniker. And liberals calling the GOP the party of no while they enjoy majority party status indicates their ranks are not aligned.

An example of this bizarre political climate demonstrates a Democrat feeling the heat from organized labor. A relationship that represents a staple alliance in liberal politics may be changing.

In Arkansas, dissatisfied labor unions worked hard against Lincoln

Willie Holmes moved to Arkansas last year to push Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D) on the union membership bill known as “card check.” He lost, but he stayed to sway her vote on health care.

That did not go his way, either, but Holmes is still here. On Tuesday, he sat with four colleagues in the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 155 union hall and waited for the votes to roll in. He was hoping that, this time, Lincoln would fall.

There was a time when organized labor supporting Democrats was as reliable as the sun coming up in the east. And there was also a time when the ‘establishment’ GOP chose the winning candidate in a primary.

Sen. Arlen Specter loses Pennsylvania primary; Rand Paul wins in Kentucky

In the Republican Senate primary in Kentucky, Paul, a political novice and a son of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.), stormed past Secretary of State Trey Grayson, who had the support of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and much of the Bluegrass State’s political establishment. With almost all of the vote counted, Paul had 59 percent, a sign of the power of his and the tea party’s small-government message within the GOP.

You may have noticed the inclusion of Arlen Specter in the title of the excerpt from WaPo. After his defeat in PA that is about all you’ll be hearing from Specter after this year. More signs that the public has a serious opportunity to change the way politics work in the US. Let’s hope it does not go to waste. Better yet, rather than hope, let’s make sure it does not go to waste.

Illegal is Illegal

Posted in Public Affairs, Terrorism, wordpress, Politics, Immigration, Tancredo, News Media, United States, Law, Justice, Border Control, Legislation, ICE, Blogs4Borders on May 14th, 2010 by Stanford Matthews

illegal immigration

There is plenty of detail in a recent story about illegal immigration that requires some sort of confirmation before drawing conclusions. What does not appear to require more supporting evidence is that the subject of the story is an illegal immigrant.

Colotl, a Mexico native, has been in the United States for much of her life, coming here with her parents when she was 10. Friends said the family moved often until Colotl graduated from DeKalb County’s Lakeside High School in 2006 with a 3.8 grade-point average.

Her troubles began March 29 when she was stopped on the KSU campus and charged with impeding the flow of traffic. She reportedly told the officer she had a Mexican driver’s license but could not find it; she offered him a Mexican passport that expired in August 2007 as identification. While driving without a license is a relatively minor offense, making a false statement is a felony with a maximum punishment of five years in prison and a $1,000 fine.

The open borders crowd and reconquista fanatics love making a distinction between ‘criminal’ aliens and others who are here illegally. The linked report from AJC demonstrates this point. But their point/counterpoint reference that this story ‘has sparked debate’ on the issue misses the central point.

The student is an illegal immigrant. While the portrayal at AJC suggests she is not an immediate threat to national security and that ICE focuses on ‘criminal aliens’ she is here illegally and being given at least a temporary pass on violating US immigration law.

You will get lost in the minutiae and miss this central point when the MSM and others prey on your natural sympathy for the poster child of ‘just coming here to find a better life.’ A better life should include following the rule of law. The first ‘better life’ component all illegals violate.

Dow Free Fall

Posted in Money Matters, Announcement, wordpress, News Media, Business on May 7th, 2010 by Stanford Matthews

Get a little thrill out of the stock market today did ya? Gee Barry, those nasty boys on Wall Street you keep talkin’ about probably didn’t cause this one. But it IS a safe bet you will try to influence opinion in that direction. Oops, the NYSE does not halt trading after 230pm ET if the market ‘free falls’ like it did today unless the dip is 20% or more.

Ooh, credit is given to ‘automated sell orders’ as reason for the market decline. Some say it is in response to the Greek debt problem going global. Whatever the reason, the liberals’ so-called ‘financial reform’ legislation will do nothing to eliminate wild swings as suggested by the President. But will today’s market activity cause the libs to add market halt requirements as well as limits on automated trading?

Maybe they should just stick to what they’re good at, talking nonsense and inciting the feeble among us, and leave the business of business to those who know something about it.

Here’s an excerpt of the WSJ’s take on today’s market action.

Traders described Thursday’s trading as driven largely by automated sell orders, which piled up after several technical barriers were breached, in particular the 1150 level on the S&P.

“A lot of people thought we had support around that level, so there was some disappointment that it didn’t hold,” said Phil Roth, chief technical analyst at Miller Tabak.

But he added: “The numbers themselves are a little less important than the manner in which the market gets there. The important thing is that we’ve had a very non-traditional bull market, without any major correction or several years of advances alternating with sideways periods. This could be the thing that sets off a real correction, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Shortly before publishing this post a news report gave credit for the market decline to a mistake that displayed P&G stock down 30% moving the market down 150 points which in turn led to the 988 point drop and 350 point closing decline.

Obama Says Tea Party Rallies Across the Nation ‘Amuse’ Him

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, News Media, obama on April 20th, 2010 by Stanford Matthews

WeThePeopleGOV.jpg

The development of public opposition to big government and the Democratic Party agenda known as the Tea Party protests was characterized in one report today as moving ‘from punchline to powerhouse.’ Other media items like the San ‘liberal’ Mercury News focused on the ‘diversity’ angle apparently used to keep the race card alive while trying to act like an objective news service.

If the MSM wants to push the race card how about this for a debating point? If the Tea Party theme of public opposition to big government and a liberal agenda is viewed by some as a single demographic perhaps those not in attendance favor big government, entitlements and the nanny state mindset.

Based on a limited review of the MSM coverage of tax day tea parties this may be one of those times when the ‘established press’ (whatever that means) provided a rather tame assessment of the day’s events.

The NYT fish wrap has a headline that merely mentions the tax day theme of Tea Party rallies along with the word ‘demonstrate.’ The Miami Herald announces the Tea Party anniversary that ‘activists mark’ with ‘more rallies.’ Other news outlets echo similar descriptions in an almost polite and uncharacteristic fashion.

Few seem interested in dismissing or insulting the growing trend this time around. Could it be they have finally realized that most Americans are fed up with the fed? Do they now understand most people oppose Obamacare, the Porkulus package, Ben Nelson’s Cornhusker Cash and Mary Landrieu’s Louisiana Purchase? Not to mention the monumental fall from grace of the GOP during their last stint as the majority party in Washington.

That would be expecting too much. It’s a nice thought and would benefit the move to return this country to its founding principles. But one day is not a trend and as mentioned earlier the news review was limited. Your basic quick glance at headlines and excerpts like the following one.

Obama also credited his signature economic recovery package with putting more than two million Americans back to work and with cutting taxes for families, small businesses and students. And he singled out the anti-tax tea party movement that fanned out across the country Thursday to hold demonstrations and rallies marking Tax Day.

“I’ve been a little amused over the last couple of days where people have been having these rallies about taxes,” the president said, noting the numerous tax cuts pushed by his administration. “You would think they’d be saying thank you.”

Mr President, either you are not paying attention or you think we are not. Perhaps like most in Congress you did not read your so-called health insurance reform bill either. Even your lap dog Harry Reid stated the bill ‘is not perfect’ but ‘we can fix it’ along with other nonsense he did not utter during the reconciliation scam. The misuse of the procedure known as reconciliation demonstrated lack of support for Obamacare. And the Tea Party movement is a reminder that Americans have not forgotten and will remember it well in November 2010.

Just think of all the votes represented by the Tea Party participants. Add to that the people who did not attend rallies but share the values of those who did. That makes November 2010 all the more interesting. Perhaps Barry from DC won’t be so amused then.

‘If the Press Had Been Doing Its Job…’

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, liberal, conspiracy, News Media, disclosure, ethics, obama on April 14th, 2010 by Stanford Matthews

….’Obama would not have been elected.’

That’s right, Dana !! (Milbank at WaPo). And if you’re wondering what this is about the press is all wee weed up about being shunned by their Messiah.  What a surprise.  That they are all wee weed up AND that Obama is throwing them under the bus.

From Limbaugh to the blogosphere to the general public Dana Milbank’s WaPo piece is generating discussion.  Here’s some background.

Obama’s disregard for media reaches new heights at nuclear summit
By Dana Milbank
Wednesday, April 14, 2010

World leaders arriving in Washington for President Obama’s Nuclear Security Summit must have felt for a moment that they had instead been transported to Soviet-era Moscow.

They entered a capital that had become a military encampment, with camo-wearing military police in Humvees and enough Army vehicles to make it look like a May Day parade on New York Avenue, where a bicyclist was killed Monday by a National Guard truck.

In the middle of it all was Obama — occupant of an office once informally known as “leader of the free world” — putting on a clinic for some of the world’s greatest dictators in how to circumvent a free press.

The excerpt above (liberally borrowed) links to Milbank’s first item.  Then comes the follow up with link focusing on what is regarded here as the central point from those commenting.

More than 1,300 comments have been filed at the hour this is written. Many of them complain that if the press had been doing its job Obama would not have been elected.

You, the MSM, bought into your own liberal mindset and helped anoint Barack Obama as the Messiah.  Now you are shocked as he throws you under the bus. Morons.

One related piece at Maggie’s Notebook points to other selective media decisions by the Obama adminstration.  It demonstrates who gets to play and who doesn’t.

Why is this such a mystery to members of the MSM?
