The contrast between conservative principles and liberal ideology revives memories of growing up in these United States. There was a time when it was typical to be concerned about how one's actions and behavior reflected on self, family, friends and community. Central to making decisions was how the choice would impact and be viewed by others. It was important to get it right and do the right thing.

Some viewed this as silly then and some do now. But being concerned about how our actions affect others strengthened the bond between people and reinforced the notion we are all in this together. It is the kind of thinking that helped forge this nation and protect it over many years. It is responsible for the achievements of the greatest generation when tyranny threatened the world in the middle of the 20th century.

It is the same notion that we can accomplish more as a group than as individuals and we do need to be concerned about those ideals which foster and protect individual liberty and freedom. Attending to the responsibility attached to such liberty and freedom must be fulfilled to enjoy the benefits of that pursuit.

We may be witnessing another test of these ideals and whether this nation is worthy of enduring for at least as much time as it already has. I hope liberals come to their senses on such matters and conservatives redouble their efforts to return to core principles and values that brought the country this far.

You say: "In a perfect world every individual would have their wishes supported by their elected representatives." Very true, we are far from a perfect world today. Conservatives are growing stronger, I believe. Yes the Republicans are trying to find their way back, but they have drifted way too far left. Conservatives and Republicans are divided. Michael Steele has made some bad mistakes (at least I hope they were mistakes), but hopefully he can recover.
