Defections to Fred Thompson Pose a Major Threat to McCain

Sen John McCainAt worst the news of a defection from the McCain camp to the Thompson camp is a harbinger of failure for someone who is wrong on illegal immigration and while holding an admirable and courageous stand on Iraq and the war on terror will not draw enough support to be successful in 2008.

At best this is just another news item designed to cause controversy for a candidate who can generate enough of that all on his own. The last thing John McCain needed to do was remind the American public he was an architect of the laughably bipartisan S. 1348. It would have been smarter to quietly participate with the man who bitch slapped McCain in the 2004 race and not brag about being for amnesty. Apparently McCain is conceding the loss of Arizona to Mexico and does not object.

Thompson began thinking about running, the Washington lawyer changed his mind.
