Harry Reid and Immigration Arm Twisting

Sen Harry ReidThe delay caused by possibly the worst Senate leader in history on an immigration bill claims it is for patching together bipartisan legislation. Previous posts presented here provided the definition of bipartisan. It means both parties believe they are in trouble and are agreeing on a way to screw the public and explain it away as the best ‘bipartisan’ solution available. Which will mean we were right in saying HR4437 was passed in the House in 2005 to give the impression Congress was serious about immigration. But they knew in advance it would not pass both Houses.

As many have said since 2005, what is the point of new legislation if no enforcement is the executive policy? They did not enforce immigration laws at least since 1986 and have no intention of enforcing any new legislation. But they will open the borders wider, provide amnesty and deport no one whatever happens with the current proposals. The only thing they are doing in this delay is twisting arms and playing politics to get the votes they need to pass a load of fertilizer on the American public. Then they will say they solved immigration, get past the 2008 elections and we will still be stuck with the mess.

This blog encourages everyone who can vote, no matter what party, no matter what ideology, to keep a list of the roll call votes for HR4437 and the next proposal they vote on. If as expected no serious legislation, or more importantly, enforcement is forthcoming, all the politicians on that list should be voted out of office next election or a petition for recall should be initiated. It is time they were held to account and not only during election cycles.

Senate negotiators racing against the clock to complete a bipartisan immigration bill will have one more day to work, as Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced on the floor Friday that he would wait to file cloture on last year’s immigration measure.
