Hillary Rodham Clinton: Anyone You Want Her to Be

Just like the warn out pick up line Hillary Rodham Clinton will be anybody you want her to be as long as she gets what she wants. In a column from the Philadelphia Inquirer about one of HRC’s recent speeches, more evidence of that truth is exposed. Earlier examples include the Southern drawl in the South, along with some bizarre imagined kinship with those who experienced the civil rights movement. Now she’s hedging her bets on Iraq and talking about God. As the columnist notes, something Dems would not tolerate from those they view as theocrats.
I hope the columnist is right about HRC angering the fringe antiwar left, but it is not a convincing act for those who want victory in Iraq. He also describes her as ‘conservative’ in Democrat terms but that seems as oxymoron. And if Bill Clinton was a ‘centrist’ or ‘conservative’ Democrat, where is the evidence that Bill and HRC are anything more than skilled at pandering. His success along those lines, pandering that is, are legendary. HRC would have to win the 2008 election to begin to match Bill’s lack of conscience. If that stirs anger in you, I have three words….. oval, office, intern.
The author of the referenced column makes some good points about the war. It is necessary to add that HRC has recently referred to herself as a ‘modern progressive’. How that is different from an ordinary progressive is unclear. Some have labeled her a marxist. That is no more of a stretch than the modern progressive label. But the truth is as stated at the top of this post is HRC will be anyone you want her to be as long as she gets what she wants.
You may call it unfair but the history is long and littered with shady circumstances to say the least. The strange events with the Rose Law firm, allowing Bill’s indiscretions from the days as Governor and beyond and probably before. Vince Foster, the savings and loan involvement and Whirewater. A sex scandal in the White House, numerous accounts of other similar episodes, a near impeachment, lying to Congress, an affinity for lobbyists, renting out the Lincoln bedroom or whatever and the list goes on. That was just from memory. Sealing her White House docs until after the election, hiring questionable campaign staff, waiving off public money knowing the dirty bucks would certainly be larger and again, on and on it goes.
You can find fault with all candidates. But there is no other candidate with such a long and continuous set of question marks as Hillary Rodham Clinton. If you are bothered by the current President, perform due diligence on HRC or whatever you don’t like about President Bush will pale in comparison with another dose of Clintonitis.

“You may call it unfair but the history is long and littered with shady circumstances to say the least.”
Most of us don’t call it unfair; we call it a joke.
“…shady circumstances to say the least”?
I’d say “…shady circumstances to say the most.”
Clinton Haters are just looking like a bunch of old farts these days.
FACTS:
President Clinton’s numbers soared with the GOP impeachment and haven’t dropped since.
Senator Clinton has won two elections in NY and currently leads all Republican candidates for President.
The GOP appears to be the go-to Party for sex outside of marriage, failed war policies, bigger government and fiscal irresponsibility.
The campaign slogan for 2006 — “Nancy Pelosi is very scary” — was a loser.
Do you really think Republicans are going to win in 2008 on “Hillary Clinton is very, VERY scary”? If so, bring it on.

Jan,
Can’t argue with you on the recent episodes within the GOP. They’re sad and unfortunate. The problem, however, is that when you’re evaluating HRC it appears you have no reference point for right and wrong. Her popularity, while alarming to me, doesn’t speak to her ability to actually lead the most powerful country on earth, especially when she’s never done anything except be the first lady. Her elections in NY…yes, she’s won them. I’ll give her that. But she hasn’t done much.
But I still agree with Matthews that if you really dig deeper and use a common sense reference point for right and wrong, such as “do not steal” or “do not lie” or “practice what you preach” then she’s scary. I don’t think the GOP can win on that platform either, but maybe one of these days HRC will actually have the guts to allow some tough questions to be thrown her way instead of the scripted soft balls. That will be a good day and one I look forward to.
I think chameleon HRC is scary because she doesn’t know who she is and what she really believes in. She says one thing one day and changes the next, depending on her audience. That is not who I want leading me.

Brad, you say she hasn’t done much, and then you give it to her that she’s been elected twice. Being elected to the US Senate is quite an accomplishment for any American, in my opinion.
I also think you DO have a reference for her moral “right or wrong” — she is a lifelong Methodist.
I think she knows exactly who she is — an intelligent human being who sets goals for her life and then accomplishes them.
I suggest you take the time to check out Senator Clinton’s website. She has a section that includes her stand on every single issue.
In addition, I live in New Hampshire and have seen all these candidates a zillion times. There are no “softball questions” up here, and Clinton answers every question put to her, without any hesitation whatsoever. It is why I think you will see her continue to rise above everyone else in the polls… because people like you claim she doesn’t address the issues, and yet the truth is, there’s not a single issue she is unwilling to address.
Since you are scared of her, you probably won’t vote for Hillary Clinton. But I think you are going to find that she will be one of our best Presidents ever.

Gallup Poll: Bill Clinton’s Popularity Plummets
Aired March 10, 2001 - 8:34 a.m. ET
First of all, the opinion of Bill Clinton on the part of the American public has been going down, down, down. This is our classic Gallup favorable/unfavorable opinion question. We’ve actually asked it about Clinton all the way back to 1992, but we just started here, November 2000. You can see 57, 57 percent in November and December, not bad numbers overall for Bill Clinton.
But then it really started to go down. By early February you can see the drop to 51 percent and then 42 and now in our most recent poll, March 5 to 7, 39 percent. That’s the lowest favorable number in history for Bill Clinton. He was tied at 42. Now he’s three points lower. Pretty bad numbers all in all. His image in the eyes of the public just going down.
Americans’ Opinion of Bill Clinton
The Feb. 9-11, 2007 poll finds that 63% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the former president, while 35% have an unfavorable opinion of him. Clinton’s favorability is somewhat more positive now than in June 2006, when 59% had a favorable opinion and 37% had an unfavorable opinion of him. These ratings are also the highest Gallup has measured since February 1998, shortly after Clinton’s relationship with intern Monica Lewinsky was first reported in the media.
From a longer-term perspective, Clinton’s favorable rating has averaged 56% since Gallup first measured opinions of him in 1992. During his eight years in office, the former president’s average favorable rating was 57%, and since leaving office, this rating has averaged a slightly lower 51%. Clinton’s highest favorable rating came just prior to his inauguration in 1993, at 66%, and his lowest rating was 39% in March 2001 following his exit from the White House, which includes controversial presidential pardons and taking gifts from the White House.
Americans’ current ratings of Clinton are divided along political lines, as they always have been. The latest poll finds that 89% of Democrats have a favorable opinion of Clinton, compared with 64% of independents and just 30% of Republicans. His latest ratings are among the highest for each party group that Gallup has measured since he left office in 2001.
