McCain: Serious About Immigration Control?
A common criticism that has become increasingly popular since the 2004 Presidential race is the flip-flop tag. While the obvious point of the label suggests a candidate lacks the qualities sought in a leader, it may be unreasonable. The downside is the suggestion that one is never allowed to change a position and remain viable as a candidate. Is it realistic to expect those seeking public office should never be allowed to change their mind on an issue? If a candidate or current public official has to be right the first time, every time, to be acceptable in a leadership role we may be asking too much. We can all think of valid reasons to change an opinion or position on an issue. Before we attach the flip-flop tag, it may be worthwhile to ask the necessary question. Why did the person change their mind?
The assumption with John McCain’s change to support a bill with no guest worker program is that supporting loose control over immigration is very unpopular. Changing support on this issue may be looked at as purely political for the reasons stated in the report below. That he now opposes a guest worker program by supporting a bill without that feature still leaves questions. Reviewing the legislative proposal would be a start. Until then the flip-flop tag may be premature although a tempting choice. The upside of this news is one more action in favor of border security and immigration control. Both tasks must be properly executed for this country’s survival. Lack of success in these matters by applying ‘feel good’ policies would be disastrous.
