Romney is Latest Target of a Slow News Day
If memory serves, John Edwards was hammered over his hedge fund experience and now the Boston Herald is hammering Mitt Romney over his family’s blind trust investment. The point being, in the article, that social conservatives would oppose those investments. This is getting silly and the media is being unfair to both Edwards and Romney and anyone else involved including the public.
To be fair, if you are going to do one, do every one, including the social conservatives. If you are going to accuse one candidate of either doing something wrong or something that would bother voters, investigate everyone. The social conservative argument is empty. Number one, who says social conservatives oppose this particular company’s research regarding embryos? The SC’s making the claim should have their investments analyzed. Every other candidate should have their investments analyzed including those who dumped stock that may be objectionable in a campaign.
It’s almost as stupid as talking about Edwards’ hair, the family history of candidates or their cleavage. There is plenty to complain or object about without these meaningless stories. AP has the story as well as the Boston Globe. That’s how these distractions are given life. If the media is having a difficult time finding something to write about with Congress on vacation for a month, work a little harder to focus on something important. You could always waste our time with your analysis of candidate positions on issues like foreign affairs, national defense, national security, health care, education, taxes or a host of others. But likely you will continue this trend and compound it by emphasizing one side of the topic of global warming, tainted food, indictments, scandals or death and dismemberment. Nothing like the value of sensationalism for print and broadcast media that is losing their audience who can read above a third grade level.

Mitt owns stock in stem cell research

Despite his “pro-life” campaign pitch, former Gov. Mitt Romney owns stock in two companies involved in embryonic stem cell research, a controversial field of study he previously cited as the reason for his rightward shift on abortion.
Romney holds stock in the biomedical firms Novo Nordisk and Millipore Corp., both of which use human embryos to research cures for chronic diseases, records show. Many conservatives fiercely oppose the research because it destroys the embryos in the process.

ASK MITT ANYTHING A JOKE!
An associate and I attended the Ask Mitt Anything rally at the OU HSC Student Union today [14th] at noon. It was well attended - 4,500 people were there. Romney gave a creditable, standard, run-of-the-mill stump speech covering immigration, health care, terrorism and energy to the largely Republican crowd. He then took questions and after four ’softball questions’ we left. So did lots of others. The whispering in the crowd was “this is a set-up.” It was so apparent the whole affair had been a carefully scripted campaign stop designed to get his message out. There is nothing wrong with that, but when you bill it as ASK MITT ANYTHING, that is disingenuous. Romney certainly knows he must address two issues with conservatives- his flip-flopping stand on abortion and Mormonism. But, whenever either of those issues come up, Mitt gets defensive and visibly angry like he did in an Iowa radio interview. You can watch the video at http://slog.thestranger.com/2007/08/romney_gets_angry_about_mormon_questions
I guess Romney subscribes to the old adage- YOU DON’T DISCUSS POLITICS AND RELIGION! What truly defines who a person is religion and politics, so when you dodge those core areas, it sends a message that openness and transparency are not who you are. The Governor’s unwillingness to address those issues head-on will not endear him to conservatives. A strategy like that will result in a quick exit from the Presidential race. Contrary to what his “handlers” are telling him, if Mitt addressed the hard issues FIRST, instead of attempting to dodge them, Romney is an attractive candidate. He’s an effective communicator, has strong values, understands what is needed to lead America. It true that being a Mormon hurts him with certain Evangelicals., but by ignoring or misrepresenting what he believes theologically, Romney insures he will not get their support. His campaign theme is TRUE STRENGTH FORM AMERICA’S FUTURE. Mitt exhibited none of that today. Playing defense only wins football games, not elections. Romney should have come to Oklahoma willing to address the two issues he knew people wanted addressed. He missed a great opportunity to define who he is- but then again, perhaps he did.
