Sen Allard and Rep Salazar on Iraq Bill

Sen Wayne AllardWhy do politicians vote party line and then attempt to explain their votes away as if they were the result of an intellectual analysis of some kind or the soul searching to do the right thing in a moral dilemma. Throughout the empty debate over the Iraq war the stakes for politicians are the same as in every controversy. Either considerations over career longevity, losing financial backers or being ostracized by their respective party. After the predetermined voting selection is exercised it is time to work on the other less important task. Convincing the constituents and public at large that you are really a good person and only had their best interests in mind.

Below are two typical examples, one from each major party. The Republican who is in the minority complains the majority party won’t cooperate and therefore a solution is not in hand. The Democrat tries to justify his vote as support for the troops. A President holding firm to his position and enough Republicans to defend his veto caused the Democrats to dangle the pork to lure GOP members Rep John Salazarto their side of the aisle.

All the time being wasted, all the missing support for the armed services and a multitude of other mistakes have provided the enemy with encouragement to continue a war that would be over already if not for the lack of support. This does not right the wrongs of how we got there but leaving before it’s done will not bring the intended result. Why compound the previous missteps and leave when their is evidence the tribal leaders and others are tiring of Al Qaeda and other insurgents as well? Finish it the right way now and correct what we can afterwards.

Democrats Cover Their Ears, Play Politics with U.S. Troops
(Sen. Wayne Allard)
April 27th, 2007
Any realistic discussion of today’s political climate must revolve around the fact that the current Majority is refusing to work in any meaningful way with the Administration and the Minority party.

We Must Change Directions in Iraq
(Rep. John Salazar)
April 27th, 2007
I voted for the final version of the House-Senate bill Wednesday night because I believe that it is very important to support the brave men and women who are serving our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan. We must do everything in our power to ensure that our soldiers have everything they need when standing on the front lines and fighting for our country.
