Sen Bayh and Snowe Not Credible
The interviews with Sens. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Evan Bayh (D-IN) on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer on PBS show just how far politicians will go to fulfill self-serving agendas. If you look at both Senators voting records and ratings among ‘interest’ groups at Project Vote Smart, you would think you’re looking at two Democrats. Few voted against the war originally so it is no big surprise they both voted for it. And now they are positioning themselves front and center of the Iraq war quagmire caused by irresponsible exercise of free speech by peaceniks and a gutless Congress only worried about political gain.

If you look at the membership of the Senate Intelligence Committee it is not hard to see how the latest proposal from Bayh and Snowe was hatched. Among others you have Feinstein, Wyden, Mikulski and Feingold on the Dems side. On the GOP side you have among others Warner, Hatch, Snowe and Hagel. And Hagel and Snowe might as well be counted on the Dems side. The only thing left to determine is if they drew straws or Bayh and Snowe volunteered.
To look as though they were cooperating, most in Congress went along with the ’surge’ plan even if they first opposed it. But when not a day goes by that the complaining and calls for withdrawal are silent, it is easy to see how this continues to benefit the insurgents while proving them right on the will of many Americans is not up to the task of winning a war.
With the ability to get hired as a lobbyist being a given for former politicians, why is it so hard for them to do what is right even if it costs them an election? It is not like they would never work again. And the money is better even if most people would feel dirty accepting it.

One of the biggest problems facing America is that so many of her politicians are more interested in their own political careers and party agendas than they are in the interests of the nation. This does not bode well for the interests of our country.
Politicians need to stop pursuing their self-serving interests and instead take actions to serve the greater good of the people of America.
