Cancun, Nature at War Over Beaches

Cancun after WilmaCancun and Mother Nature are at war again.

Mexico spent $19 million to replace beaches washed away by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, but erosion has shrunk Cancun’s sandy playground to the point where waves at high tide lap against some hotel patios.
To bring tourists pouring back after Hurricane Wilma, the ocean floor was dredged to rebuild eight miles of beach, nearly double their pre-hurricane size, and hotels were refurbished.

Is that how it’s done? When the roads are flooded you choose to ride a bicycle? Ok. A destination known for years as a convenient and relatively inexpensive vacation getaway. But Mother Nature has decided to change that. Probably due to all the help from those crazy humans. Keep developng on top of the beach while removing the vegetation that keeps the sand where you want it.

Big public/private plans for funding to restore beaches and repair erosion are in the works. It’s one of those untimely predicaments that usually arises after years of neglect. The travel industry should build a list of replacement venues for contingency plans on all the mature vacation spots. As they start falling apart people will need new places to abuse. You know, the impractical industry that cmplains along side the airlines for how tough things are. No practical limits are considered. Just try to accommodate customers no matter how ridiculous the requests.

Come on, get out there. What’s in your wallet? Getting a weekend getaway for fifty cents at a five star hotel. Having your luggage arrive when you do, priceless.
