U.N. supports U.S troops staying in Iraq

Although it is not like we were invited into Iraq, we were. You may remember the games being played internationally prior to the US ‘liberating’ Iraq. Don’t get the impression that this is an antiwar rant because it certainly is not. Some loosely associated individuals claiming to be Iraqis were imploring the US to get involved. The Kurds had supported our assistance before and during Desert Storm although it can only be said we abandoned them. Point is, plenty of people with unconfirmed motives made requests on the US to intervene in Iraq long before the current President Bush got us there.

You may also remember the lack of support in the UN from ‘allies’ and other European countries, with the exception of Britain, right up until our nearly unilateral entrance into a war in Iraq. And now an extension of the UN’s mandate for the US to remain in Iraq. The ‘new’ government in Iraq continues to reaffirm their desire for the US military to remain also. Some objections are voiced from citizens of Iraq and of course the insurgents don’t want us there.

Some say the surge is working and some disagree. It is quite possible those sentiments are just repeating previously maintained opinions from the very beginning of this conflict. Reports on the ability of the Iraqi army, security and/or police forces to maintain stability in the country without US support repeat the call for more time and more training and that things will get better some time in the future.

It would really be helpful if the Iraq government, public and various ‘forces’ could show a concerted effort and results on a regular basis to have the will if not the ability to effectively share responsibility in this situation. The continued repetition of requests for more time and lack of confirmed success is disappointing. Enough complaining about the US and what we have done or how things are going. Could someone else please step up?

U.N. supports U.S troops staying in Iraq

By EDITH M. LEDERER, Associated Press WriterThu Jun 14, 3:19 AM ET

The U.N. Security Council agreed Wednesday to an Iraqi request to extend the mandate of the U.S.-led multinational force after the country’s foreign minister said the troops were “vitally necessary.”

The council also strongly condemned the bombing of Samarra’s revered Shiite shrine and urged all countries, especially those in the region, to support Iraq in its pursuit of peace.

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told the council members that despite the senseless violence “the government has made tremendous strides toward the day when security will be provided by a self-sufficient, Iraqi national security force.”

The problem is always the money…who gets the oil money? Someone reported today (I was distracted by the US Open) that Iraq is close to an acceptable plan to divvy up the revenues. Having done that, will that stop those those lurking in the night planting their IED’s? Probably not.
