Zed Shaw Puts The Smack Down On The Rails Community

Wow, you don’t see rants like this every day. Zed Shaw, who created Mongrel, a library and web server that just about everyone uses to serve rails applications, is basically a God in the Rails community. In a post today called “Rails Is A Ghetto” he tears into a number of leading Rails developers, the community in general, and a number of startups (and Google).
Zed Shaw misses the point. BTW, who is Zed Shaw and what’s so important about Ruby on Rails? As a matter of fact what is so important about anything in tech? Its only purpose is like any other sector of business….. turn a ;profit for someone. It has nothing to do with advancing the availability and usefulness of technology. Everything gets doled out in increments that suit the business model. It may not be like the conspiracy theory of buying up the mega mile per gallon engine to keep it from consumers but it is not different in terms of milking each advance despite the need for better tools.
Nice use of the language in your rant Mr Shaw. Nothing like raising the bar on a discussion by borrowing the drunken sailor routine. Oh, now the swabbies will be offended. With great examples of how not to drive the business of technology like Bill Gates, seems a lot of people couldn’t get enough of his ripoffs. You could extend that to Intel and AMD. Does anyone remember the Intel/HP statements of some years ago when they claimed an entirely new architecture would be on the market in five or six years?
More memory, more storage, more video, faster connects and nothing else has really changed in two decades or more. This short sermon on a tech overview should enlighten as to why it is such a laugher when someone ‘rails’ about what’s wrong with a small part of the tech world. Look at any product you like and tell everyone where the great advances and purposeful use has been achieved.
Another year begins and we’ll do the same thing all over again this year with the same tools. Happy New Year. And Zed Shaw won’t even notice this post and that’s okay. Because before today there was no clue who he was from this small part of the world. Gee Wally, could it be the rant was for self-promotion. Say it ain’t so.
